Kenny Beggs wins Beltane Cup 22

 

Congratulations to Kenny Beggs, topping the Swiss table of 8 at the Beltane Cup’22. Every player had six games and Kenny was unbeaten, finishing the evening with 6 wins while Martinog Bradley was runner-up with 13 points. It was good also to see the WASPA debut of Donegal's Frankie Connolly.

Sven Schilling wins Sankt Pauli May tournament

Sven Schilling won the May WASPA at Subbuteo Sankt Pauli thanks to 3 wins and a draw as 7 players battled it out for the monthly crown. Monthly regular Fred travelled from Hannover with teammate Luc who was making his debut at the Millerntor, but both struggled after the long drive with Fred finishing 3rd behind the always consistent Marius. Phillip rolled in 4th undefeated with 3 draws and a win and in the bottom three Andre grabbed 5th with 2 draws and Luc pipped Ralf to 6th courtesy of goal difference.

Another great night, and always great to see a new face. We will see you again on Tuesday 7th June for our WASPA or every week for club training.

Anas Rahamat wins in Singapore again

The May session of the 2022 TFAS SG League took place on 29 May at The Sports Hub Library. 6 players were in attendance for a full-robin format where each player gets 5 games.  Anas Rahamat exerted his dominance in Singapore table football by going unbeaten with 4 won games & 1 drawn game.  After the initial 3-way tie-up at the top of the League among Anas, Den Mulia & Bernard Lim; Anas is slowly but surely pulling away!!  As the SG League reaches its mid-point, Anas has a 10-points lead in the overall standings! Well done and congratulations Anas!

Five Belgium clubs hold WASPA events in May 2022

Here is a summary of the six tournaments held in Belgium in May. We are glad to see 5 different clubs organizing tournaments.

The Templeuve club had the visit of some prestigious clubs on May 13 as Josef Camilleri from Malta was staying in Belgium for a couple of days and attended the Templeuve tournament with clubmates Pierre De Leeuw and Bessim Golger. Due to the great field of 14 players, the top 8 players competed in Swiss system while the other six players met in a league format. Bessim Golger was definately the man of the evening and finished on top of the table with a few more goals scored than Pierre De leeuw whilme Geoffrey Marain was in a bad day and ended in 7th position. Eric Caillaux (France) won the league format after many close games. Eric had 11 points while Didier Moons and Sébastien Sorge had 10 points.

On the same day, the club of Verviers-Herve had a tournament with 8 players competing in groups and knock-out games. Christophe Dheur (Valletta) won the final against Stembert's Pascal Scheen (3-2 in sudden death) while Sébastien Scheen (Salernitana) and Ludovic Ponthieux (Valletta) were the losing semi-finalists. Eric Threis (Stembert) was 5th, Philippe Roufosse 6th, Geoffrey Dheur 7th and Benoit Vanwissen 8th.

In Huy, the mid-week tournament organized by the local club had a small turnout of three. Ralf Grégoire was unbeaten and won all his games while Richard Boulanger was runner-up and David Boulanger was third.

On May 20, the "Magic Team Tournai" club hosted a good event with 8 players competing in Swiss system. Organizer Michaël Dupret was on fire and won his four games to win the trophy while three players ended the evening with 7 points and only the goal difference could decide positions.

Finally, on Wednesday, the Templeuve United club held a "promotional tournament", which means the top players from the area (Geoffrey Marain, Matthias Averlant and Vincent Coppenolle) were not allowed to take part. The event had 7 players from 4 different clubs taking part and some visitors coming in the premises of the club to discover the game. Before the last session, brothers André and Pasal Flémal were on top of the table but their game ended as a draw and André finished the evening with 8 points, Pascal 7 while Michaël Dupret won his third game to claim the victory with 9 points.

After a string of last minute cancellations, a small field of four players ended up having a really great afternoon’s play. New returnee to the game Neil Hampton made an impressive debut - especially considering his lack of experience with the new bases and related tactics. We look forward to now meeting on a monthly basis in the build up to the Cape Town Open in October, when it also looks likely that we will be hosting a visiting team from the Johannesburg area.

Fabrizio Coco claims the AGFA Cup

Fabrizio Coco claimed the 22nd AGFA Cup with a 3-1 win against Adrian Grunbach.

A change in format to have 2 groups of 8 players catered for our interstate visitor Giuseppe Tardiota (Brisbane Subbuteo) to give players as many games as possible.

With the lightning 15-minute matches, those 7 group matches equated to 3 1/2 normal games and then a final ranking match.

Special mention must be made to Paul Mercer who created a brand new competition sheet to run the event, and to Tom and Janice from WIlloughby Park Bowling Club for arranging the space.

Things got off to a cracking start with Tony Credentino on fire against Johnny Ball (4-0), and Giuseppe also 4-0 over Billy Koutzas.

By the end of round 3, things started to take shape, and then in round 6 a few surprises shaped the final phase.

Biggest surprise was Jonty's 3-1 win over the previously unbeaten Geoff Sirmai.

The semi finals had two close battles, with Adrian Grunbach and Eliot locked at 1-1 before Adrian wom 3-1 on shots, while Fabrizio and Tony battled to a 0-0 draw before a marathon shootout ended 4-3 to Fabrizio.

In the final, Fab started like a house on fire and roared to a 2-0 lead before Adrian pulled one back, and then Fab finished things off with a 3rd.

Last Sunday Martin Bellefontaine took the Solent WASPA Open Tournament title. The tournament was played by 16 competitors from several clubs from England and Wales such as Solent, Sport Vale, Andover, Worthing, Yorkshire Phoenix, London SC and Cardiff.

Tournament Director Jason Christopher was also in a great day, reaching the final after defeating Sam Virgoe in the quarter-final and Dave Croucher in the semi. Martin Bellefontaine was on fire and defeated Jason Christopher by a clear 5-0 in the final. 

Malcolm Jamieson defeated Chris Burford in the Plate final.

Aaron Skinner winner in Dublin

Last week-end the third round of the Irish Subbuteo championship took place in Dublin, Republic of Ireland. Many thanks to John Moore, Andy Fitzpatrick and Mark Farrell for a successful tournament.

Congratulations to Aaron Skinner on winning the event. The Bristol Subbuteo club player defeated Stanway Rovers player Kevin Cordell in the final while Mark Farrell and Barry Spence made it to the semi-finals.

Martinog Bradley won the Plate event after defeating Mick O'Brien in the final while Finn Skinner won the Junior tournament.

17 players from Ireland, Northern Ireland and England were taking part.

Lorenzo Fazio wins junior tournament in Genova

Last week-end another tournament was organized in Genoa Campomorone, Italy for young players only. This time the host of the event was SC Valponte, one of the neighboring clubs of the "Rebels Genova". 12 young players competed in the tournament. The first round consisted in 4 groups of 3 players while the second round saw 3 groups of 4 players to decide the places from 1 to 12. Lorenzo Fazio was the winner this time while Davide Gigliotti was runner-up. Congratulations once again to those who work with the youth and see youth development as a priority for the future of the game!

8 players attended the Solent tournament. After the group stage, knock-out games were very close. Jason Christopher proved to be on top after a few weeks off to the game due to an injury and defeated Corey Martin in the final (3-2). Paul Pearson and Steve Smith made it to the semis while Malcolm Jamieson won the Plate final against Nigel Morgan.

A small tournament was organized by the East Lancashire Subbuteo Club and Gavin Roper won hs three games to take the trophy. David Scholes was runner-up whil Morecambe Bay SC's Rob Wilkinson took the third place.

Alan Lee organized the Woobly Hobby SC tournament to celebrate the come-back of Welsh legend Richard Stock. After a long break, Richard played very well but Alan Lee took the honors once again.

Singapore welcomes Arjune Hanafi back home after more than 2 years!

KB Doves TFC hosted a 'Long-Time-No-See' WASPA on 11 May 2022 at their club premises at Kebun Bahru Community Club in honour of Arjuna Hanafi.  This is the 1st time in more than 2 years that the Melbourne-based Arjuna is able to return to his home country!!  A total of 4 flickers took part in a round-robin format and each player gets 3 games.  At the end of play, Bernard edged out John on goal difference with both players tied on points after both having 2 wins + 1 draw.  Arjuna finished ahead of Azhari on goal difference to finish 3rd with both players tied on 1 point.

 While we marked Arjuna's home visit with what we all loved best on the table, the off-table banter, catch-up and camaraderie after more than 2 years are all the more memorable and precious.  In attendance was also Arjuna's 2 sons: Aiman & Adam.  Till we next flick again, here's wishing Arjuna & his family safe travels back to Melbourne! We are extremely happy because we had 34 tournaments in April, which is a really big number proving that the activity of Subbuteo table football tournaments is back to normal in many countries. Cyprus and Austria had their first event for 2 years and we are glad to see 25 players making their debut in the WASPA circuit. Numbers as slowly rising again, which is a very encouraging sign. it's also good to see the number of juniors rising to 85 but we are sure we can do much better in the future. The youth must be a priority for our clubs as only 7 clubs have 3 juniors involved and can appear in the junior ranking of clubs.

Here are some highlights of the month:

- TSC 69ers in Italy have been back in action with a first tournament since September and 10 players taking part;

- England is amazing with so many tournaments run by different clubs in different regions of the country. Alan lee and the different involved clubs deserve respect for what they are doing;

- The Sankt-Pauli players in Germany almost beat records as their latest event had a great turnout of 9 players;

- 9 players also showed up in events in the Netherlands and Singapore;

Players at the latest Northern Falcons tournament in Australia

- Australia is still doing well with events held in three different cities;

- We are glad to see small but nice meets in South Africa and Italy (old rules);

- The tournament in Tournai (Belgium) had 14 players including four beginners, which is really nice;

- French players in Symphorien sur Coise did a great job with 12 players taking part, some beginners and plans for another event to be held in May:

- In Baden-Baden (Germany), four players from 4 different nations met for a great day of play;

- In Czech Republic players met for a small tournament, not in Prague this time but in a smaller city called Kladno;

- Players in Limassol met for the first time in 2 years, helping Cyprus to be back in the ranking of nations;

- Marian Flemer from Germany won the tournament held under WASPA banner during the recent FISTF Open of Traiskirchen (Austria).

Tastoglou and Scotiniotis win Easter Cup!

16 players recreated the Greek Easter Cup, a very old competition that no longer takes place. Players were divided in 2 categories: one for players with old equipment and played with old rules and one with modern equipement and FISTF rules. It was again a very good tournament with a lot of action and great games. Congratulations to the winners and to all the participants for another successful WASPA event. 

France: Denis Polsinelli winner in Saint-Symphorien-sur-Coise

On Saturday the club of Saint-Symphorien-sur-Coise was holding a second WASPA tournament with a good turnut of 12 players. There were superb matches and some surprises with some youngsters competing with the older players. The tournament was great with 4 groups of three players and then 3 groups of four players and in the end, the winner of the day was Denis Polsinelli while Mickael Blanc was runner-up and Tristan Monchalin, who was playign his first tournament, was third. The next tournament in Saint-Symphorien-sur-Coise will take place on May 14 with the visit of Eric Naszalyi, president of the French association.

Belgium: results of the April WASPA tournaments

Belgium had a couple of tournaments in the last few days. Clubs of Templeuve, Flanders, Verviers-Herve and Tournai held some great events in a great spirit.

The Templeuve United tournament had 10 players competing in Swiss System on April 22. No surprise this time as Geoffrey Marain was the clear winner of the evening with 4 wins while Matthias Averlant was a deserved runner-up.

In the same evening, four players competed in home and away fixtures in Verviers-Herve. Pascal Scheen finished the evening with the same number of points as his brother Sébastien but was decided winner thanks to the scores in the games between them (2-2 and 6-1).

Last Monday (April 25), 5 players met in Antwerp for the 76th WASPA event of the SC Flanders group. David Wouters was simply unbeatable  and took the honors while Jos Ceulemans was runner-up, Geert Leys was 3rd, Stéphane Lambert 4th and Dirk Sercu 5th. To be noted that during the week-end Dirk Sercu held an introduction day for new players and several kids were introduced to the game with some success. 

Finally, the "Magic Team Tournai" club held a tournament on April 29. There were not big hopes to have a great turnout as three of the usual players were travelling to Malta to play the FISTF tournament in Bormla but maybe the absence of players such as Geoffrey Marain and Matthias Averlant was a source of motivation for other players. David Wouters travelled from Antwerp to play while four new players from the city of Braine were playing their very first tournament. In the end, everything was decided in the last session and Vincent Coppenolle defeated David Wouters to win the tournament while Michaël Dupret was runner-up thanks to a great goal difference. Of course, more importantly, the new players had fun and said they will come back :-)
