Giulio Astengo wins inaugural event in Cardiff

We are starting publishing the news of January 2020 with the first report of the year. The Cardiff Bluebirds club in Wales was the host of the first tournament of the season on January 2.

Congratulationss to Giulio Astengo for winning the Cardiff WASPA event, the 1st Subbuteo event of the year. Not exactly a goal fest. Both semi-finals (Aaron Skinner v Darren John Barnes & Giulio v Dave Samuel) finished 0-0.

The final between Darren & Guilio was decided on shots after a 1-1 draw.

Finally thanks to the mystery guest turning up to present the trophy.

Brian Daley wins London Road Christmas Cup


The London Road Subbuteo Club MySubbuteo Xmas WASPA was held last Sunday at the Parrot in Drury. 7 players took part in a league format and there were many good games. Lothe event had a really mixed bag of results. Brian Daley wins again after winning every game, Chris Bedford came second but it great to see Ruby Matthews finishing third.

Brian Daley wins 3rd Birthday Parrot Cup


London Road Subbuteo Club held their 3rd Birthday Parrot Cup last Sunday and the tournament was a league of 8 players with Benji Batten from Melbourne TFC (Australia) as special guest. brian daley won his seven games to win the tournament while Cayne Matthews was runner-up and Benji Batten took the third place. The next London Road tournament will be held on December 22.

News from the UK - Results from Liverpool - Lincoln - North Wales - Derry

Several events have already been held in the UK in October and here is a brief summary of results.

Brian Daley winner in Liverpool
The ESA tournament in Liverpool (England) had a good turnout of 8 with a group stage and more games to rank players from 1 to 8. Brian Daley was the winner with no surprise but it was nice to see Chris Bedford reaching the final for the first time. Ruby Matthews won the plate  and the was a first trophy for Raoul Newton. That was a great day of play for all.

Lincoln Flickers Round Robin
The tournament took place on October 9 during David Young's visit from Prague. David completed his UK Subaleague tour with 5 wins and only one goal conceded. He finished off with a win at Lincoln Flickers (still unbeaten) to put the icing on the cake! Jez was the only person to hold the visitor but later slipped back to fourth.

London Road Subbuteo Club held their 35th monthly event on October 13 in Drury, North Wales. 6 players played in a league format. Brian Daley took the honors while chris bedford was runner-up.

Derry City Frightening Flicks 2019
Results in from this years Frightening Flicks tournament. A small crowd for this years tournament with some late drop outs, hence everyone having 3-0 against Kenny Beggs, he couldn’t make it in the end up! A league style was played with Martinog Bradley coming out the eventual winner closely followed by Donegal’s Brendan Rodgers. Great evenings craic and games.

Latest gathering of the South Staffs club
50 years of flicking football at South Staffs TSC
Finally, a small word to congratulate Mike Bradbury and the South Staffs TSC for their 50 years of continuous existence. The club currently have around 15 members drawn from all over the English Midlands counties. We wish them all the best for the future!

More results from around the World - September 2019

Some more results from September. Sometimes we receive reports of small events played in different countries and pictures and not always available to but it's great to see games played under WASPA banner in many countries.

Christos Agrios winner in Greece
Earlier in September the Greek club of Panorama 1978 SC Thessaloniki had their first tournament of the season in Thessaloniki. 9 players were taking part with three groups of three players in the first round and then a fin round between the top players of each group. Christos Agrios won the tournament after finishing on top of the final group while Stavros Giapoutzis was runner-up and Ilias Galanopoulos took the third place.

Howard Christie winner in Toronto
In Canada Howard Christie won this month's tournament in Toronto. Unfortunately there wer eonly three players taking part this time. Howard defeated Mike Sgro in sudden death in the final (2-1).

A good turnout in Stockton
In Stockton, England the NETFA players had a good event with 8 players taking part. After the group sessions, final were played to decide the winners. Neil Beeforth defeated Mike Parnaby (1-0) to claim the title while Ben Staples won the game for the third place on shots against Nick Pearson.

Eliot Kennedy wins in Russia
During his visit in St. Petersburg, Australia's Eliot Kennedy had the please to meet local players Andrey Vlasov and Evgenii Vlasov. A small WASPA event was played and Eliot was the winner but the fact new friends were made was much more important!

Two events in Berlin
Since Herman Kruse moved to Germany, there might be some WASPA developments in the country. The Northern Falcons players first attended a tournament played in the premises of the Sparta Spreeathen 74/82 club. A group of six players was taking part and after the league format the rankings was as follows:

Small event but good games at SC Berlin
The other Berlin tournament took place at the SC Berlin club with a small turnout of three players with Hermann Kruse finishing on top of the group while Nico Müller was runner-up and Erik Klossowski was third.

Algy Taylor of BCCM Border Collectables hosted a Wrexham Subbuteo Club last Sunday. Wrexham player Cameron Ramage was joined by London Road SC players Cayne, Ruby, Brian and Lucasz and a league format was played. Brian Daley finished on top while Cayne Matthews was runner-up.

September 2019: Short news from around the world

Here are some results of several tournament held in different countries.

Wales: Brian Daley winner in North Wales
The first London Road tournament of the season took place in Drury on September 15 with 8 players taking part. Brian Daley defeated Martin Blanchard in the final while Chris Bedford and Cayne Matthews reached the semis. Mark Tilling beat Ruby Matthews in the Plate final. There will be another tournament in Wales in September as another Wrexham event will take place on September 29. The next London Road tournament will be played on October 13.

Finland: Robert Green on fire
There was a small but interesting tournament in Helsinki earlier this month with both eliot Kennedy and Robert green from Australia meeting three local players. Robert green defeated Kari Hakkarainen in the final.
There shoudl be another tournament in Helsinki in January. Interested players can contact Kari Hakkarainen at Kari.Hakkarainen@elisa.fi

USA: Conan Mullen winner in California
The San Francisco players had a gathering earlier in september. Four players only were present but after home and away games everybody agreed it was a great day of table football. Conan Mullen ended as winner of the day while Varant Kurkeyerian was runner-up.

Canada: Howard Christie does it again
Some late results of the August tournament in Toronto where Howard Christie defeated Mike Sgro in the final of the event. Five players were taking part.

There will be more action in Toronto all over this season with several events already in the agenda.

Singapore: Freshmen Challenge
The Freshmen Challenge tournament was hel at the Millenia Walk on September 14 and this WASPAevent was reserved exclusively for newcomers.

It was held at Millenia Walk as part of ongoing promotions during the F1 season in Singapore.
Seven players battled it out in a 5-round Swiss System.

Aidil came out comfortably on top and undefeated, with his son, Haziq close behind in second place. Well done! Results are as follows:

Two more trophies for Brian Daley

Two events have recently been held in the UK. The latest London Road tournament in Drury had a small turnout of four with Brian Daley winning the event after home and away fixtures while Cayne Matthews was runner-up.

In Liverpool, the last tournament of the season saw an impressive number of dropouts due to several reasons but in the end Brian Daley took the honors once again, finishing on top of a group of five.

There will be more events in both London Road and Liverpool clubs next season. Beginners are always welcome to enter!

August 2019: news from around the world

Some news from around the world as we recived results from Wales, Austria, Australia and Hungary.

Players in Wrexham
The Wrexham Subbuteo Club WASPA tournament took place on August 18. Wrexham players Iestyn Bevan, Tyler Bevan, Callum Parry and Michael Harper were joined by London Road players Cayne Matthews, Ruby Matthews, Brian Daley and Lucasz Whittle. After the group stage and the semi-finals, Cayne Matthews managed to beat Brian Daley on shots for the very first time. Ruby Matthews and Lucasz Whittle were the semi-finalists while Michael Harper won the consolation tournament.

In Austria, the Royal 78 club in Vienna organized their yearly club championship under WASPA banner.

One month after Heinz Eder's victory, Alexander Haas (see picture) took the honors this time af defeating Stefan Sandner in the final (3-3 and shots). Congratulations Alex!

In Australia, the Perth players had their monthly gathering this week-end and Ross McNulty finished on top of a group of 5. It was great to see Ross back in action. The Perth club will continue hosting more WASPA tournaments next season.

In Brisbane, six players met for the monthly tournament of Brisbane Subbuteo Club. For this tournament they played "The Wigan system", with a slight alteration in that you played everyone with the results counting to the individual and team cups but results against your own team mates didn't count towards the team cup.

The theme was Bundesliga and in the final, Giuseppe Tardiota defeated Gus Gillespie (1-0). The team cup was won by Team A by 13 pts to 10. "The next tournament will be played the same way but the final standings will decide the teams for next time and each team will be a different national league, eg team A is the Italian league and team B is the Spanish league", explained Gareth Whalley.

Finally, some news from Hungary where the Budapest club had the visit of an Italian Subbuteo player, Angelo Micoli (Subbuteo Club Valdarno). Angelo was in Hungary with his family and played games two times. A small WASPA event was organized on August 11 where three players played each other three times. It was a small event but it was great fun, according to the players. Gábor Baross was the winner of the day with Áron Mácsik being runner-up and Michele Micoli as third.

Brian Daley wins the Parrot Cup


On Sunday London Road Subbuteo Club was holding the club's monthly tournament at The Parrot, Druty.

8 players were competing and the special guest of the day was Belgium's Jos Ceulemans.

In the semis, Brian Daley defeated Cayne Matthews while Jos Ceulemans took the best on Martin Blanchard.

Brian later beat Jos (2-0) in the final. Dave Kelly defeated Mark Tillin in the Plate final.

Thanks to Cayne for another great day of table football.

First tournament in Wrexham



Wrexham Subbuteo Club WASPA

Four new players from Wrexham (Tyler Bevan, Michael Harper, Kai Humfieys and Regan Cowan) were joined by Ruby Matthew (London Road) and Lucasz Whittle (Liverpool) to play their first event in Wrexham last week-end. All players had a great time and look forward to playing again next month.

Brian Daley winner in Wales


The London Road Subbuteo Club tournament was held this Sunday at the Parrot, Drury (Wales).

It was a double round robin with five players involved. After home and away sessions, Brian Daley was the winner with 24 points while Cayne Matthews was runner-up. Dave Merrilees-Kelly was third, Ruby Mattews fourth and Lucasza Whittle fifth.

A good day was had by all.

Action in Wales: results from Drury and Knighton

Several tournaments have recently been held in Wales. The London Road club had a great regional tournament last Sunday with a good fuield of 8 players. Brian Daley defeated Richard Stock in sudden death to win the final. Mark Tilling and Danny Bird made it to the semi-finals while Ruby Matthews defeated her father Cayne to win the plate final.

In Knighton, the 8th and 9th regional tournaments of the season had many good games. The first tournament was won by danny Bird who finished on top of a group of 5 while Tom Taylor was runner-up. Rory Gittoes, Matt Booth and Kenny Evans were also taking part. On week later, the same five players were joined by Dan Nicholls. Danny Bird claimed the honors once again but Dan Nicholls was runner-up.

Finally last week and promotional tournament was played in Knighton with this time Tom Taylor finishing on top of a group of four.

Congratulations to all the players and to the organizers for their great work.

Brian Daley and Tom Taylor winners in Wales


On Sunday London Road SC were joined by Wolverhampton TFC players Mick Hammonds and Richard Badger and Liverpool TFC Lucasz Witthle. The tournament consisted in groups of five with then semi-finals and consolation games. In the main event Brian Daley won his semi-final against Chris Bedford while Mick Hammons defeated Richard Badger. Brian later defeated Mick (1-0) in the final to claim his 36th WASPA title. Yanik Merrilees-Kelly won the consolation tournament after defeating Cayne Matthews (1-0). The next London Road tournament will be held on May 19.

A few day earlier, Knighton TFC also held a WASPA tournament with five players competing in in league format. Tom Taylor took the honors after taking 10 points in four games. Dan Nicholls was runner-up while Danny Bird took the third place.

March 2019: news from around the world

Here are some late reports of events held in March. We didn't have the time to publish all the news so here is a summary.

The club of Attard in Malta held another tournament in March. 12 players were involved and experienced players took the best as Joseph M. Debono defeated Claude Cuschieri on shots in the final while Walter Attard and Natalino Tanti were the semi-finalists.

In Spain, the Marina Citerior club had two small events with 3 players involved. Pasquale Carrassi won two time with David Mc Aulay finishing as runner-up on both days.

In Derry, Northern Ireland, there was a small turnout of 4 players on March 19. We played a round robin league format with 1st playing 4th and 2nd playing 3rd for the semi-finals. Martinog Bradley took the honors. Oisin Mor put on an impressive display for someone so recently playing the game, reaching his first final after a sudden death shoot out with Donegal’s Brendan Rodgers. Great fun!

Leonidas Koutromanos won the latest Pireas Lions tournament in Greece after defeating Stamatis Syrmos on shots in the final. Lambros Tekos and Andreas Eleftheriou were the semi-finalists.

Fabrizio Coco won the latest Sydney TFC event, finishing as best of 6 players and defeating Tony Credentino in the final.

In Wales the club of Knighton TFC held a WASPA tournament on March 3. Five players were taking part and Danny Bird finished on top of a group of 5 with Tom Taylor ending as runner-up.

A great day of Subbuteo in Ireland
In Ireland, Derry’s Martinog Bradley won ‘Europe’s most westerly’ WASPA tournament. Many thanks to Donegal Subbuteo and Brendan Rodgers (who was also runner-up) for hosting and organising a great event and a great days craic.

Some words finally from Finland where four players met to play a very international tournament. George Papadopoulos from Greece finished on top of a group robin with Australi's Robert Green finishing second. Finnish players Kari Hakkarainen and Jarkko Lindholm were also taking plart. there are already plans to organize another tournament in Helsinki on April 28.

Brian Daley wins again in North Wales


The 28th London Road SC Parrot Cup was played with eight players on Sunday. London Road players Cayne, Ruby, Brian, Rich, Dave, Chris and newcomer Steve Peacock were joined by Liverpool TFC player Lucasz Whittle. Brian Daley easily won group A with Chris Bedford ending as runner-up. Richard Stock won group 2 while Cayne Matthews also qualified for the semis. Brian and Richard later qualified for the final and Brian Daley won the last game (3-0) to win the tournament. Great performance by Ruby Matthews won won the plate event after defeating Dave Merrilees-Kelly in sudden death.

Cayne Matthews wins promotional event

London Road Subbuteo Club held a WASPA promotional on 13th March 2019. London Rd player Chris Bedford hosted the event and six players played a league format. With all still to play for the last two games played could have changed everything. Jonathan Bedford could have won the league with a win over Cayne Matthews in his last game but lost and finished 4th. Last game of the night also see Ruby Matthews have a chance to win the league, she needed a win against her dad and was 1 up at half time, but lost the game leaving her in 3rd place Chris Bedford in 2nd and league winner Cayne Matthews.

Brian Daley wins the Parrot Cup


Last Sunday London Road subbuteo Club held another WASPA tournament in their usual room, the Parrot in Drury. Seven players were taking part and the tournament consistyed in a group format.

Brian Daley won all his games to claim the title while Richard Stock was runner-up. Cayne Matthews was third. Mark tilling took the fourth place, his best result in a WASPA tournament. Congratulations to all players!

Short news from around Europe

In Greece two more events have been played in the last few days. Last Sunday the club of Panorama 1978 SC Thessaloniki held a tournament with 8 players. In the end of the day, Constantios Giapoutzis defeated Christos Agrios in the final (2-0) to claim the title. Stavros Giapoutzis and Ioannis Terzidis were the semi-finalists.

A bit earlier, the Roligans had their second event of the month and this time it was a "promotional event" with four players. Alexis Tzelatis finished on top of the round robin while Chris Kotrotsos was runner-up, Konstantinos Stefanis was 3rd and Stavros Mesonisanakis took the 4th place.

In Wales, the recent Knighton tournament had a good field of 6 players. Dan Nicholls took the honors after winning his five games.

In England, the Brock WASPA Challenge Cup was played in Bristol on February 15.
Gavin Gurney finished on toip of a group of 3 while Bernard O'Connor was runner-up and Taylor Randles took the third place.

In Italy, Firenze subbuteo Club had another good evening of play on Monday with 15 players competing. This time Luca Pini defeated Emanuele Cattani in the final while semi-finalists were Mirko Masini and Stefano Barducci.
Alessio Riccio won the consolation tournament after defeating Tiberio Becucci in the final.

Brian Daley does it again in North Wales

London Road Subbuteo Club had another successful tournament last Sunday with a good turnout of 11 players coming from both Wales and England.

Group A consisted of 6 players and had some close games, Brian Daley finishing on top with 13 points and Martin Blanchard also qualifying for the semi-final while Mick Hammonds had 10 points.

No surprise in group B where Richard Stock won his four games while local organizer Cayne Matthews also made it to the semis. In the knock-out stage Daley easily defeated Matthews while Martin Blanchard scored a golden goal against Richard Stock to qualify for the final. Brian Daley won the event after defeating Martin Blanchard (3-0) in the final.

Congratulations also to Chris Bedford for winning the Plate tournament.

The next London Road tournament will be held on February 24.

Chris Bedford wins Greenfield Cup

The Greenfield Cup 2018 took place last Friday. The tournament was a promotional event held in Greenfield, Wales. Besides Chris Bedford, four new players made their WASPA debut. Chris Bedfoord won his four games to win the title.
