Earlier Cranston had lost Bryan Arnold 1-2 in a great result for the Virginia based player. Eyes also defeated Cranston (3-0) to leave Cranston on the brink of elimination. He secured his spot with a shootout victory over Andrew Zunino, before defeating Eyes and Deinhart to take the title. In junior play, Sam Cohen topped a four man field going undefeated on the day. The event was played in honor of Alex Giffen, who sadly passed away last week. The Giffen family (7 siblings) have all played in table soccer events in the mid atlantic area in years past, and they are part of our table soccer family. The players raised $300 in Alex’s name. This money will be sent to the Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma Research Foundation (ACCRF) later this week.

Daniel Cranston vs Bryan Arnold
Earlier this month the "Flicko de Mayo" in East Lansing, MI tournament was another success with competitors travelling from several US States to play for FISTF ranking points. Besides the main event, two small tournament were played under WASPA tournament. The Friday event consisted in a group of three where Daniel Cranston from Maryland was the best to claim the WASPA Gideon Smith Cup. Peter Alegi was runner-up while Bryan Arnold took the third place.

Tim Tumminaro vs Eric Walton
On Saturday Erik Haefke defeated Eric Walton in the final of the WASPA consolation tournament. Tim Tumminaro and Paul Pate were also taking part.

The Perth club is still alive
We received some late results from Perth, Australia where three tournament from the last few months had not been recorded yet. The February tournament had a good field of six. After the roud robin, Tan Yew Loy defeated Alan Kimber in the final. In March, Tan Yew Loy finished on top of the table after home and away fixtures. Chris Thorn was runner-up, Hugh Best was thrid and Ron Byrne was fourth. In April, only four players were taking part and Tan Kok Wee from Singapore was not only the special guest of the day but also the winner of the tournament after defeating Tan Yew Loy in the final.

Promotional tournament for Michaël Ponthieux

In Bande, Belgium, after the "Cup of Province of Luxemburg", a WASPA promotional tournament was played with Michaël Ponthieux finishing on top of a group of four to claim the title. Daniel Boistelle, Philippe Thys and Lulani Verhoeven were also taking part.

Simon Stewart wins Sporting 18 tournament
Players at the Sporting 18 tournament
In Northern Ireland, Simon Stewart took the honours at the Sporting 18 'May Day Cup', but the day was really about introducing two new club members to the game. Dana Stitt looked like she could have a real natural ability for the game as she finished 2nd, beating fellow debutant Claire Sweet with a flowing attack from kick-off and then pipping club legend Lochlin Bradley thanks to a last minute equaliser.

After a break the four played off in the 'May Day Shoot-Out Penalty Cup', a simple shoot-out competition across the shooting line. Claire took that title with three straight wins with Dana finishing second. Stewart and Bradley were left to slug it out for the wooden with Stewart edging it thanks to a 2-2 draw.

A great afternoon was had by all, Dana has taken temporary possession of Simon's pitch and a few teams and we're hoping to get another round of flicks in soon.

Chris Kaberry wins WASPA Cup in Ponteland
Stephen, Dave, Nick, Chris
The first WASPA Cup mini tournament of 2019 under the North Shields STF banner was held in Ponteland last night 26th May.

Two hard fought semi finals with new boy Nick Pearson flicking-off his first competitive game in 30 odd years with a win. The goal coming 2 minutes from time. Chris got lucky in game two when he was able to shoot into an empty net after a keeping error. On form Dave took his equalizer well and then defended stubbornly to take the game to a shoot out. Chris edged it 2-0.

The 3/4 and final were a little one sided with Stephen not having his best night and Nick struggling to keep pace with Chris. However, he took his goal well and it shouldn't be too before he's competing with the best of us up here in the North East of England. Well done lads!

Abagnale winner in Angri
Finally, in Angri (Italy), the club of Castello Doria CT held a good day of table football with six players taking part. Gianpaolo Abagnale defeated Francesco de Angelis (5-3) to win the title. This was the club's second tournament with hopefully many more to come.

Some news from around the world - October 2018

Some results of several WASPA events have not yet been published so here is a brief recap of events held in different countries.
Players in Northern California
In Northern California, Conan Mullen finished on top of a group of five to win the "NCSC Halloween WASPA". There were some new players involved and some great games.

In Austria the Ebenfurth club had a small tournament a few weeks ago with 4 players taking part. Congratulations to Horst Deimel for the win while Rene Buchler was runner-up.

In Wales the latest Knighton tournament saw Dan Nicholls finishing on top of a group of 4. Tom Taylor took the second place.

In Australia the Western Flickers TFC players had a great gathering on October 14. 8 players competed in a round robin so that everyone had seven game. Benny Ng took the honors while benjamin Ng was runner-up and Steve right took the thid place.

Three more events were played under WASPA banner during the Melbourne Open.

Junior U19 WASPA: The junior WASPA was held for all those eliminated from the FISTF event. Second seed for the FISTF Junior competition, Billy Wright, overcame his disappointment at elimination from the main event to make the final but didn’t join his sister on the winners’ list, going down on penalties to promising debutant Liam Browne in the Junior WASPA final. (report from Subbuteo Australia)

MTFC Open WASPA: The Melbourne IO Event also saw the debut of the Power Rankings to decide the outcome of a WASPA tournament. The rules were:
- 1. Players not occupied referreeing the Junior, Women’s or Teams events on the Saturday were free to organise themselves games on the spare tables and record results.
- 2. The final standings were made using the new Power Rankings system given that not all players played a similar number of games, or games against players of the same standard. Only results on the day counted. A win over a player who had performed well on the day was worth more than a win against a player who was winless.
- 3. All enquires on how Power Rankings are calculated should be directed to Richard Wilson.
- 4. For disputes on the outcome, see rule 3 !
The completion was narrowly taken out by Raffaele Lombardi from Eliot Kennedy and Giuseppe Tardiota in a good indicator of players to watch in the main Open event on Sunday. It was great to see 10 players from 5 different clubs taking part. (report from Subbuteo Australia)

WASPA Open: To ensure the WASPA was complete prior to the FISTF IO Final, the format was a straight knockout competition with 2x10min halves and penalties (no extra time). There were 9 competitors in the WASPA Plate Event, with the previous days’ junior runner up Gabriel Lombard joining the 8 players eliminated from the FISTF Open event. Gabriel played Charlotte Wright in the barrage. After a scoreless draw Charlotte won 2-1 on penalties to move into the quarter finals.
In the quarter finals, Charlotte continued her impressive run of results by defeating Adam Deverell 2-1 on penalties. This set up a semi final showdown with her brother Billy who progressed after Beth Eveleigh needed to forfeit due to illness. Benny Ng accounted for Christos Garagounis to set up a clash with his son Benjamin in the other semi final after Benjamin defeated Juliette 1-0.
In the battle of the Wrights, it was Billy that prevailed 2-1 on penalties after a scoreless draw. In the other semi Benjamin continued his run of wins over his father to progress to the final 3-1.
The final saw two of the Western Flickers’ juniors battle it out for the WASPA Open win. In the end the FISTF Junior IO winner,
Benjamin Ng, proved to strong for the WASPA Junior IO winner Billy Wright. (report from Subbuteo Australia)

Canada had two events in October and both tournaments were played on the same date (October 20).

In Montreal, Simon Harvey won his first WASPA tournament after defeating Pierre Chastenais in sudden death in the final. More importantly, it was fantastic to see five players gathering for a tournament. We really hope for a good future in Quebec.

The monthly event in Toronto had a good turnout of four with Mike Sgro defeating Final Howard Christie in the final.

Finally, in Spain Pasquale Carrassi won the Marina Citerior SC "promotional event" in Javea, which was held a few weeks ago. the italian finished on top of a group of 3 with Scotland's Bill Dunham and Italy's Lisa carrassi also taking part.

Please keep mind all results are welcome. Even if you have only three players, that's enough to have a WASPA tournament. And if you are visiting a foreign country, you can always organize a "WASPA test-match" against a local player to show some WASPA presence.

For any question, contact WASPA at vincent.cop@rsca.com
