December 2019: news from around the world

Here is a quick review of some events held under WASPA banner in December. We are waiting for the last few results of last month to publish the december rankings. Hopefully everything will be ready by the end of the week.

3 dedicated players in Javea

Spain: one more tournament in Javea
The Marina Citerior Club held a 15th "Tea Time Tournament" int he beginning of the month. Unfortunately the club is struggling to get new players but the usual members of the clubs are still very motivated to play together. italy's Pasquale Carrassi finished on top of a small league (with home and away games) with David Mc Aulay being runner-up and Bill Dunham taking the third place.

Greece: Roligans Christmas Cup
The Roligans club organized a Christmas tournament on December 21. There were 13 competitors including a special guest of the new club of Ippovotes Chalkida Club. Evangelos Kotrotsos (U15) won the tournament while the runner-up was Tassos Priftis. This time the event was a knockout tournament and the players eliminated played for Category B. Therefore the winner of the B tournament was Dimitrios Rembis.

Players in Thessaloniki

Greece: Panorama still doing well
Also in Greece, the Panorama 1978 SC Thessaloniki organized a tournament with 6 players involved. This time Ioannis Terzidis took the honors after defeating Constantios Giapoutzis in the final (2-0) while Stavros Giapoutzis won the game for the third place.

Some good games in Donegal

Ireland: action in Donegal
Also the Republic of ireland saw some Subbuteo action in the end of December with three players competing in a group format in Donegal. Local organizer Brendan Rodgers finished on top of the table while clubmate Oisin McKeogh was runner-up and special guest from England Nick Pearson took the third place.

Canada: Howard Christie does it again
This month's tournament in Toronto had a small turnout of three but there were many close games. Defending champion Mike Sgro could not win another event as Howard Christie won the final against Mike to win the "tournament of the decade".

Isle of Man: Joseph Kinrade is a winner
We have been extremely glad to see some action on the Isle of Man where Joseph Kinrade won the "Ellan Vannin WASPA Christmas Cup" after defeating brian Kinrade in the final. The tournament had a good turnout of four players including first time player Lisa Warren from England. The tournament was played as a group of five with the top 2 qualifying for the grand final.

Switzerland: Test match in Wil
Just a few days before the WASPA tournament in Eschenbach of January 5 (results coming soon), there was a test match between local player Martin Wiesmann and South Africa's Clinton Gahwiler from Cape Town. The game ended as a draw but more importantly it was a good way to have Switzerland coming back to the WASPA circuit with more good news coming up soon.

Carlos Flores wins WASPA tournament in Alicante

I Demo Fun Subbuteo Tournament & VIII MontGoal Subbuteo Tournament, 21-22-06.2019 Ondara, Alicante, Spain

The two events organized last weekend by Marina Citerior Subbuteo Club have been an organizational success, registering a good number of visitors. Thanks to the support of the Portal de la Marina Shopping Center, the environment has been outstanding.

A lot of interest from children and adults, who have been able to discover Table Soccer for the first time with the help of great players. It has been proven that playing in public places represents a great opportunity to promote our game in the most effective and direct way.

The competition for beginners Demo Fun has been won by Fernando Gonzalez, while the pro event, the VIII MontGoal Subbuteo Tournament has registered the triumph of multi world champion Carlos Flores after an exciting final against Alberto Mateos.

Brilliant third has been Julio Candelas who has won the consolation final against David Somoza. It has been surely two days of great fun for all.

Promotion for forthcoming events in June 2019

A quick look at the promotion of forthcoming events with the great job of some of our active clubs.

In Italy, the "69ers" will hold a tournament in Borgo Vercelli and they proudly told the local newspaper the tournament is played under WASPA banner, which is a great form of respect.

In South Africa the Pretoria Flickers have revealed the poster of their next tournament.

In Derry (Northern Ireland), the next DCTFC tournament will be held next Monday.

Finally, the amazing job done by our Spanish friends of Marina Citerior SC who have had support of local sponsors and will hold a special tournament on June 21&22. Rumors said Carlos Flores Lopez will be taking part, which is fantastic for WASPA. there will be a prize money and all details are available from https://www.portaldelamarina.org/evento/torneo-de-subbuteo/

May and June 2019: news from around the world

Here is a quick look as some of the events held around the world in May and early in June.

Western Sydney tournament

An all Western Sydney Subbuteo saw two of the Micallefs, along with Paul and Adrian, do battle at Good Games Bella Vista. A simple round robin, with each player playing the other was run. In the opening round, Paul put two goals past Louis while Adrian scored three against Vince, his new bases adding some chipping to his shooting. The same scorelines followed in the next round, with Paul slotting two past Vince and Adrian three past Louis. The final matchups were much more even affairs. In the father and son battle, neither could take the advantage with a 1-1 final result. Meanwhile, Paul conceded his first goal in his last six competitive fixtures to also finish with a 1-1 draw against Adrian, leaving them ties at the top of the points table to share the honours.

Giuseppe Tardiota winner in Brisbane
Brisbane had a small turnout of three for their monthly tournament but there were many close games with Giuseppe Tardiota finishing on top of the group after home and away fixtures to claim his 17th WASPA title. New Zealand's Gerry Vickers was runner-up while Gareth Whalley took the third place!

Steve Bennett wins Scottish circuit tournament
In Scotland, Steve Bennett won the first stage of the Scottish circuit held in Letham, finishing on top of the ladder after four sessions played in Swiss system. 10 players from Glasgow and Dundee were taking part. Here are the final standings:

Christos Agrios does it again

In Thessaloniki, Greece 9 players competed in the club's monthly tournament. Christos Agrios defeated Stavros Giapoutzis (2-1) in the final and Ilias Galanopoulos won the game for the third place against Constantios Giapoutzis.

First trophy for Nathan Urbaniak
In Melbourne, the consolation tournament of the recent FISTF tournament was played under WASPA banner and Melbourne TFC's Nathan Urbaniak took the honors after defeating local player Anthony Madiona in the final.

The Chastwood players had a small WASPA tournament with 6 players taking part.

Great event in Liverpool
Liverpool TFC keep on developing with some very motivated players. The club's monthly tournament had a good turnout of 8 players. Brian Daley defeated Anthony Dry in the final while Steve Santo won the consolation tournament.

Singapore champion in Perth
In Perth, Australia, the club's monthly tournament saw Tan Yew Loy emerging of a group of four players. Hugh Best was runner-up while Ron Byrne and Chris Thorn also managed to grab a few points.

Howard Christie wins in Canada

Finally, the monthly tournament of the Toronto Subbuteo club saw five players competing with group games and knock-out games. Howard Christie defeated Richard Ruffolo in the final to claim the trophy. The next Toronto tournament will be played on June 15.

Bristol WASPA Tournament
The Curtain closer to the season was a WASPA tournament. In an attempt to level the playing field players were seeded and then the higher ranked players were handicapped with less players on in their team. Thought it did not seem to slow Aaron down as to romped, Manchester City like, to 16 goals scored in 3 games without reply to pick up the latest WASPA tourney.
Outstanding result of the WASPA event was Barry’s 1.0 win over Malcolm and 2 narrow 1 goal defeats which underlines the progress that he has been making on the arena of baize.
Peter Marshall's 1.1 draw with Adam was a fine result and earmarks him as a dark horse contender for Division 3 next season.

In tonight’s games Aaron had rattled in 16 WASPA goals and 5 ‘retro’ goals – that is some going and makes him a hot favourite to improve on this season’s finish in the BSFC Division 1 - could he bring the title home? As for tonight’s Final it bore some resemblance to the FA Cup final at Wembley, like Watford Bob played quite well had did very little wrong but, like Man City, Aaron just had the mood and the knack of opening up Bob’s tight defence with skill, speed and a deft touch. It was 1.0 at half time and Bob was still very much in it...then the floodgates opened!

Tea time tournament in Javea

The Marina Citerior club in Spain played the "13th Tea Time tournament" on June 1. Pasquale Carrassi won once again but this time there were many close games and after home and away fixtures, Pasquale took 7 points in four games, just enough to win while David McAulay had 6 points and Bill Dunham 4.

Latest results from around the world - April 2019

A quick look at the latest events held in April. We didn't get stories of all these tournaments so here is a brief view at the results.

In Australia, many events were held to raise awareness and money for testicular cancer. Many clubs held tournaments under WASPA banner. The Hipfingerz held a tournament with 12 players taking part and Fabrizio Coco defeated Olliver Ollnow in the final (2-1) while Hermann Kruse and Tony Credentino made it to the semi-finals.

Northern Phoenix tournament

The Northern Phoenix tournament consisted in a group of six with Benny Ng taking the honors after winning his five games. Steve Wright was runner-up while Benjamin Ng, Beth Eveleigh, Kevin Grant and Arjuna Hanafi also took part.

Canberra also had a tournament with three players. Nick Brill was the winner with Ryan Farrall and Bruce Millar being the other players taking part!

Giuseppe Tardiota won the Brisbane tournament. Four players competed in home and away fixtures and Chris Scholess was runner-up.

Players at the Sydney TFC tournament

Sydney TFC had a good turnout of 6 for their event. Fabrizio Coco defeated Steve Dettre in the final. Tony Credentino and Jonty Brener made it to the semis.

Olliver Ollnow won the Chastwood tournament, finishing on top of a group of five. Hermann Kruse was runner-up.

Eliot Kennedy won the Western Sydney tournament with Adrian Grunbach and Paul Magee also reaching the podium. 8 players were taking part including newcomer Andriko Nicola.

Finally Jayden Truter won the promotional event organized by the Western Flickers. Benedict Ng, Angeline Ang and Aaron Ang also took part. All four competitors were juniors!

In Spain, the Marina Citerior club had two small events with Pasquale Carrassi winning both tournaments. Bill Dunham was runner-up un April 13 and David Mc Aulay took the second place one week later.

In Austria, during the Grand Prix of Vienna, eight players played a consolation tournament under WASPA banner. Thrasyvoulos Gagas from Greece defeated Austria's John Luc Magdits in the final. Local player David Scherbantin and Áron Mácsik from Hungary reached the semis.

Liverpool TFC in England had a good event with 8 entries. Brian Daley defeated Eric Williams int he final. Jim Hannah and Lucasz Whittle reached the semis.

The was a small gathering in Helsinki, Finland where George Papadopoulos (Greece) finished on top of a group three. Robert Green from Australia and Kari Hakkarainen from Finland were the other players taking part.

March 2019: news from around the world

Here are some late reports of events held in March. We didn't have the time to publish all the news so here is a summary.

The club of Attard in Malta held another tournament in March. 12 players were involved and experienced players took the best as Joseph M. Debono defeated Claude Cuschieri on shots in the final while Walter Attard and Natalino Tanti were the semi-finalists.

In Spain, the Marina Citerior club had two small events with 3 players involved. Pasquale Carrassi won two time with David Mc Aulay finishing as runner-up on both days.

Martinog bradley winner in Derry

In Derry, Northern Ireland, there was a small turnout of 4 players on March 19. We played a round robin league format with 1st playing 4th and 2nd playing 3rd for the semi-finals. Martinog Bradley took the honors. Oisin Mor put on an impressive display for someone so recently playing the game, reaching his first final after a sudden death shoot out with Donegal’s Brendan Rodgers. Great fun!

Leonidas Koutromanos won the latest Pireas Lions tournament in Greece after defeating Stamatis Syrmos on shots in the final. Lambros Tekos and Andreas Eleftheriou were the semi-finalists.

Players at the sydney TFC tournament

Fabrizio Coco won the latest Sydney TFC event, finishing as best of 6 players and defeating Tony Credentino in the final.

In Wales the club of Knighton TFC held a WASPA tournament on March 3. Five players were taking part and Danny Bird finished on top of a group of 5 with Tom Taylor ending as runner-up.

A great day of Subbuteo in Ireland

In Ireland, Derry’s Martinog Bradley won ‘Europe’s most westerly’ WASPA tournament. Many thanks to Donegal Subbuteo and Brendan Rodgers (who was also runner-up) for hosting and organising a great event and a great days craic.

Some words finally from Finland where four players met to play a very international tournament. George Papadopoulos from Greece finished on top of a group robin with Australi's Robert Green finishing second. Finnish players Kari Hakkarainen and Jarkko Lindholm were also taking plart. there are already plans to organize another tournament in Helsinki on April 28.

Some news from around the world - October 2018

Some results of several WASPA events have not yet been published so here is a brief recap of events held in different countries.

Players in Northern California

In Northern California, Conan Mullen finished on top of a group of five to win the "NCSC Halloween WASPA". There were some new players involved and some great games.

In Austria the Ebenfurth club had a small tournament a few weeks ago with 4 players taking part. Congratulations to Horst Deimel for the win while Rene Buchler was runner-up.

In Wales the latest Knighton tournament saw Dan Nicholls finishing on top of a group of 4. Tom Taylor took the second place.

In Australia the Western Flickers TFC players had a great gathering on October 14. 8 players competed in a round robin so that everyone had seven game. Benny Ng took the honors while benjamin Ng was runner-up and Steve right took the thid place.

Three more events were played under WASPA banner during the Melbourne Open.

Junior U19 WASPA: The junior WASPA was held for all those eliminated from the FISTF event. Second seed for the FISTF Junior competition, Billy Wright, overcame his disappointment at elimination from the main event to make the final but didn’t join his sister on the winners’ list, going down on penalties to promising debutant Liam Browne in the Junior WASPA final. MTFC Open WASPA: The Melbourne IO Event also saw the debut of the Power Rankings to decide the outcome of a WASPA tournament. The rules were:
- 1. Players not occupied referreeing the Junior, Women’s or Teams events on the Saturday were free to organise themselves games on the spare tables and record results.
- 2. The final standings were made using the new Power Rankings system given that not all players played a similar number of games, or games against players of the same standard. Only results on the day counted. A win over a player who had performed well on the day was worth more than a win against a player who was winless.
- 3. All enquires on how Power Rankings are calculated should be directed to Richard Wilson.
- 4. For disputes on the outcome, see rule 3 !
The completion was narrowly taken out by Raffaele Lombardi from Eliot Kennedy and Giuseppe Tardiota in a good indicator of players to watch in the main Open event on Sunday. It was great to see 10 players from 5 different clubs taking part. (report from Subbuteo Australia)

WASPA Open: To ensure the WASPA was complete prior to the FISTF IO Final, the format was a straight knockout competition with 2x10min halves and penalties (no extra time). There were 9 competitors in the WASPA Plate Event, with the previous days’ junior runner up Gabriel Lombard joining the 8 players eliminated from the FISTF Open event. Gabriel played Charlotte Wright in the barrage. After a scoreless draw Charlotte won 2-1 on penalties to move into the quarter finals.
In the quarter finals, Charlotte continued her impressive run of results by defeating Adam Deverell 2-1 on penalties. This set up a semi final showdown with her brother Billy who progressed after Beth Eveleigh needed to forfeit due to illness. Benny Ng accounted for Christos Garagounis to set up a clash with his son Benjamin in the other semi final after Benjamin defeated Juliette 1-0.
In the battle of the Wrights, it was Billy that prevailed 2-1 on penalties after a scoreless draw. In the other semi Benjamin continued his run of wins over his father to progress to the final 3-1.
The final saw two of the Western Flickers’ juniors battle it out for the WASPA Open win. In the end the FISTF Junior IO winner,

Canada had two events in October and both tournaments were played on the same date (October 20).

In Montreal, Simon Harvey won his first WASPA tournament after defeating Pierre Chastenais in sudden death in the final. More importantly, it was fantastic to see five players gathering for a tournament. We really hope for a good future in Quebec.

The monthly event in Toronto had a good turnout of four with Mike Sgro defeating Final Howard Christie in the final.

Finally, in Spain Pasquale Carrassi won the Marina Citerior SC "promotional event" in Javea, which was held a few weeks ago. the italian finished on top of a group of 3 with Scotland's Bill Dunham and Italy's Lisa carrassi also taking part.

Please keep mind all results are welcome. Even if you have only three players, that's enough to have a WASPA tournament. And if you are visiting a foreign country, you can always organize a "WASPA test-match" against a local player to show some WASPA presence.

News from around the world - August 2018

Several small events have been held during the month in many different countries.

First trophy for Richard Ruffolo

In Toronto, Canada there was a turnout of 4 players for the latest TSC tournament with Richard Ruffolo winning the final against local top player Mike Sgro. Dan Santianni and Mike Devey also had some great games and prove to be improving au lot.!

In Scotland, Dundee United had two small events also to prepare the trip to the world cup. Steve Bennett won both event with Andy Beskaby being runner-up int he first event, David Baxter taking the second place of the second tournament.

In Australia, the Brisbane club organized a tournament under the theme of the world cup. Gus Gillespie defeated Gerry Vickers in the final to claim the honors.

In England, the Bristol club held a pre-season tournament with a small turnout of four players competing in a league format with home and away games. Simon Donadel took the honors while Bob Fairbrother was runner-up. Adam Fraser and Tim Mourant also managed to win some games!

We have been glad to see some action in Indonesia after a long hiatus. During Steve Dettre's visit in Jakarta, the FISTF president managed to play a small tournament with Arudyu Putro Rudy and Winaldo Swastia Artaraya. Steve won the event but more importantly it was a good time to meet and discuss and the future of the game in the country.

The "Sporting Club 18", part of the "Podjistan Subbuteo Association", a new club based in Northern Ireland, held a first tournament last week. Martinog Bradley took the best on local organizer Simon Stewart and Lawrence Watson. There should be more events to come in the near future.

Players in Vreese

In Belgium, the club of Semois SC based in Vresse had a preseason event with four players. Pascal Droeven finished on top of a group format with Grégory Berte as runner-up, Philippe Thys being 3rd and Marc De Vos also playing some good games.

In Spain, the latest promotional tournament in Javea had a small field of 3 players with Pasquale Carrassi taking the best on Bill Dunham and Lisa Carrassi. It was a good way for Lisa to prepare for the forthcoming world cup in Gibraltar where she will proudly represent her club of Marina Citerior!

Finally, Knighton TFC in Wales had a promotional event last Friday with 5 players taking part. Dan Nicholls took the honors with Tom Taylor being 2nd. Rory Gittoes, Matt Booth and Kenny Evans confirm they are very motivated for the new season and the Knighton club will continue to grow in the future!

Ivan Acuña winner in Catalonia

On August 6, 2018, the "Copa de la República Catalana" (in English: Catalan Republic Cup) has been played in the village of Cardedeu (Catalonia) with the formula of a league between the four players who took part, and then semi-finals and the final to decide the winner. The players were Guillem Alsina, Ivan Acuña, Jordi Geronès, Ferran Borbones.

There are already plans for another event in a couple of months, so probably we will celebrate another tournament in late October or November.

A first WASPA title for Angel Valverde

Apart from the nice summer sunny day, the main reason for the success of the VII MontGoal was the participation of great players like the Dutch Henk Landzaat, and the Spanish Pedro Benavent and Angel Valverde, both selected to play the forthcoming World Cup in Gibraltar end of August. In particular Valverde must be considered a top players, one of the best actually playing in the world federal circuit.

The formula was a league followed by semi-finals and the finals, including a total of 20 matches played in the sunny Javea.

The level was as high as expected. As forecasted the winner was Valverde after an interesting final against Landzaat. Pasquale Carrassi finished third, showing a promising improvement in terms of concentration and effectiveness. Benavent played as well great matches during the league. Bill Dunham also showed a great attitude but was unlucky loosing the consolation final against the more experienced Abraham Martinez.

Pasquale Carrassi winner again in Javea

On June 9 the club of Marina Citerior held the sixth edition of the MontGoal tournament in Javea, Spain. Six players took part to the event and there were good news as two new players were joining the tournament. Both were coming from Alicante, Frederic and David Sala. Organizers were happy to welcome them here in Javea, making the effort to travel and play with the local group.

Firstly a mini-league was played, including five rounds and 15 matches and then semi-finals and finals, for a total of 20 matches. It was quite an intense morning indeed and an entertaining one for sure. The winner was Pasquale Carrassi after a very good and disputed final against David Mc Aulay who played a great match.

Pasquale now reached is third victory in the tournament and won the Peter Adolph Cup once again, but just temporarily, as the trophy will be definitely assigned only to the winner of five different editions.

Fernando Gomez wins again in Javea

Earlier this month the club of Marina Citerior was holding a tournament in their premises of Javea. there was a small turnout of six due to last minute droputs. Fernando Gomez and Pedro Benavent travelled from Valencia to play.

The group stage saw some surprises and the Valencia players easily qualified but also scored less goals against novices than against experienced players and contributed to see Alex Iliev and Stefka Pirova qualify for the semi-finals. In the end, there was no surprise.

Short news from around the world

Some small events have been held in several nations in the last few days. here is a brief summary of these events.

Action at the latest Sydney tournament

Eliot Kennedy wins in Sydney
The club of Sydney TFC held a great WASPA tournament last week with 8 players taking part. Eliot Kennedy (Northern Falcons TFC) defeated local player Fabrizio Coco (1-0) in a close final to claim the honors. Hermann Kruse and Kostas Barbaris made it to the semi-finals.

Austria: action in Ebenfurth
TFC Ebenfurth was playing a tournament this week with six players. A league system was set up wo that everyone had five games and to decide the winner of the "35 Year Jubilee Tournament". In the end David Busch won his five games and was the winner while Mario Perrti was runner-up and Hungary's András Hicz took the third place.

Scotland: Steve Bennett still reigns in Dundee
The 7th stage of the Dundee United domectic circuit took place last week-end with six players meeting each other. Steve Bennett too the honors and Andy Beskaby was runner-up.

Promotional event in Spain
The third promotional tournament in Spain was played in Javea earlier this week. Pasquale Carrassi finished on top of a group of 3 with 9 points while David Mc Aulay also finished with 9 points but less goals scored. Bill Dunham, who was a new entry in the WASPA circuit, finished in third place.

Italy: first tournament in Angri
A small event was held last week in Angri, Italy. Three players with no club had a first tournament together and Gianpaolo Abagnale defeated Giuseppe De Amicis in the final. Francesco Martino was the third player in action. Welcome to them in the WASPA family!

Australia: Great debut for Mark Ryan in Perth
The recent Perth tournament was full of surprises. Mark Ryan was playing his first WASPA tournament and managed to win the final against Alan Kimber while Ross McNulty defeated Chris Thorn in the game for the third place. A total of six players were competing and everyone had the chance to play at least seven games.

Fernando Gomez wins another MontGoal Tournament

On Saturday there was some action again in Spain as the club of Marina Citerior was holding the 4th MontGoal Tournament. It was a good event with seven players, a total of 25 matches played and the participation of two of the winners of the Spanish Championship by the Spanish Table Soccer Association, Alex Iliev and Stefka Pirova. A league formula was played and then the semi-finals between the first four and the finals. The clear winner was Fernando Gómez, followed by Pedro Benavente and Pasquale Carrassi third. The Hall of Honor is now two victories each for Pasquale and Fernando. The Peter Adolph cup will be assigned to the first  player able to reach a total of five victories.

To be noted Marina Citerior Subbuteo Club also held a small promotional tournament earlier this month with three players. Pasquale Carrassi finished on top of the group while David Mc Aulay was runner-up and Lisa Carrassi took the third place.

3rd Mont Goal tournament in Javea

In Spain, the 3rd "Mont Goal" tournament in Javea had a small turnout of 3 after several players dropped out due to the flu. Players met each other twice and in the end Pasquale Carrassi (Italy) defeated David Mc Aulay (Scotland) in the final (4-) to claim the title.

Roland Schwacha is a winner in Ebenfurth
In Austria, the second tournament in Ebenfurth saw the victory of Roland Schwacha who finished on top of a group of 4. Horst Deimel was runner-up while Hungary's András Hicz took the 3rd place. Robert Lengyel was fourth. To be noted Robert, Horst and András finished with the same number of points and the goal-difference was needed to decide the winner.

Action in Malta during the FISTF Satellite

WASPA games durung a FISTF tournament in Malta. Thank you Josef Camilleri!

The FISTF Satellite of Bormla in Malta had a consolation tournament under WASPA banner. Melvin Barun took the honors after defeating Jamie Bonnici in the final. Thanks to Josef Camilleri for making things happen!

5th tournament of the season in Derry

In Derry, league night number 6 was run as the club's 5th WASPA tournament of the season. 6 players competed in the league format with Martinog Bradley coming out on top, closely followed by Brendan Rodgers. The next Derry tournament will be held on January 19.

Dan Nicholls wins in Knighton
A Promotional tournament was held in Knighton on Sunday. Dan Nicholls finished on top of a group of 4 while Tom Taylor was runner-up, Danny Bird took the 3rd place and Kenny Evans was 4th.

Jos Ceulemans still on top in Belgium

Finally, the 46th WASPA tournament of SC Flanders took place on Monday in Hofstade-Zemst, Belgium. Six players were attending in Swiss system and Jos Ceulemans won his four games to finish on top of the Swiss ladder. Great job!
