On what was, results wise, not to be a great day for Western Sydney Subbuteo, it was the three visitors from Northern Falcons - Adrian G, Louie and Steve - who would take the honours, though nothing was quite straightforward with no player being able to completely dominate.

There was much excitement as Phil joined for his first ever tournament, bringing along his old lightweight Bradford City team for their first run out since a curry and beer evening back in his homeland in 1989. He was given a quick brush up on 21st century rule developments and thrown in at the deep end against Louie, suffering a 2-0 defeat but making a great fist of it for his first game in 35 years. Ray went ahead with a superb goal on the run against Adrian E, but was pegged back by a reciprocal, on the run, goal. Neither could find a winner, though Ray's 'keeper was named figure of the match. Adrian G used his experience to ease to a 2-0 victory over Tim, while Steve finished with the same result against Hipfingerz' Geoff.

In a very tight set of Round 2 fixtures, Louis beat Adrian E for the second time in succession, winning with a goal that was so surprising to both players that neither could quite figure out what had happened, except that the ball was in the back of the net! Geoff led for much of his game against Ray, only for Ray to find an equaliser with another goal on the run with the final flick of the match. Tim took a 1-0 win against Phil, which Phil was counting as a moral victory, the first of many moral victories he will win as a 'new' player! Adrian G continued his march to the top of the table with a 1-0 victory over Steve.

The Round 3 top-of-the-table clash between Adrian G and Louie lived up to expectations, with both players cancelling each other out and unable to bother the scoreboard attendants. Adrian E took an early lead over Geoff and game managed the rest of the match to finish with the win. But the action was all happening in the Ray vs Phil clash. Within 30 seconds there was uproar as Phil felt he had scored his first goal of the day, only to be denied by Ray and his controversial insistence on correctly applying the rules of the game. Ray then went ahead and was looking to ease to a comfortable victory, only for Phil to keep coming back at him, scoring an equalising 2nd goal in the final minute of play to record both his first competitive goals and his first competitive points.

Adrian E needed a victory over Adrian G in the final round to have any hope of winning the tournament, but could not find a way through in a very even, end to end match in which both players had their chances but in which neither could stamp their authority. Likewise, Steve could leapfrog his Louie with a victory over his son but, in the end, had to settle for a 1-1 draw, Louie holding on to his place at the top of the table. Geoff picked up his first win of the day with a victory over Phil, while Ray finished the day with his undefeated record in tact, courtesy of his fourth successive draw, this time against Tim. Talk about an accommodating host!!

With Louie and Adrian G finishing level on 8 points, and, having drawn their game against each other, it came down to Power Ranking points to determine the winner. Adrian G came out on top courtesy of having picked up his results against stronger opponents, overall, across the afternoon. The 1-2 Falcons finish was then reinforced by Steve's 3rd place finish, leaving the Western Sydney Subbuteo players, along with Geoff from Hipfingerz, to fill out the rest of the final table.

Another hugely enjoyable few hours of Subbuteo, highlighted by an excited new player keen to return again. Eating! A collection of gourmet accompaniments were lavished atop humble hotdogs, washed down with ciders and white wine, and the crew were primed to get on with the flicking.

A 9 player Swiss tournament necessitated 4 pitches - 3 crammed into the air-conditioned clubhouse proper with a 4th out on the back verandah. While the temperature had, thankfully, cooled from the high-30s of earlier in the day, there was still plenty of humidity about, along with the ubiquitous mosquitos, so players were really stretched by the conditions. Louis and Dave were the first to put themselves to this test, with Louis making a fine start and a 2-0 victory. In the air-conditioning, Adrian and Gabriel played their first ever competitive match against each other, Gabriel holding out for a significant part of the game before Adrian scored 2 late goals. Imojjen came from behind to take a 1-1 draw with Franck, while Steve and Tim played out the exact same scoreline.

Steve was unimpressed with the two mediocre goals Franck put past him in their match up, especially as Steve could only find 1 of his own in reply. Louis stayed on the humidity pitch but this time fell 1-0 to Adrian. Imojjen and John failed to bother each other's goal while Dave took a narrow 1-0 win over Gabriel.

The third round was one that could have been done without, in retrospect. Across the four fixtures, not a single goal was scored, which probably validates the benefits of a Swiss system but really didn't do much to excite spectators!

Round Four pitted John against a son for the second game running, with him going down 1-0 to Tim on this occasion. The humidity finally caught up with a wilting Louis with Franck hammering him 4-1. Steve was in clear control in his game against Gabriel and so began to give pointers to Gabriel. Gabriel listened carefully and then proceeded to score his first of the evening based on this advice! Meanwhile, for the first time ever, Dave picked up a competitive point against Adrian. Having gone behind following a fatal traveling goalkeeper error, Dave managed to eke out a small piece of space behind Adrian's defense and slip an equaliser with a few minutes remaining.

A final round of catchup games for all of those who had sat out for a bye had the potential to determine the final standings significantly. John was no match for Steve who won 3-0. Imojjen was clearly fading as the evening wore on and Tim took full advantage, claiming a 2-0 victory and slotting himself right amongst the top of the table.

That table was congested! 3 players ended the evening tied at the top on 8 points, so Power Rankings (where the relative strength of each opponent is factored in) were used to determine the winner, with Franck coming out on top, followed closely by Tim then Adrian. With every player picking up at least one positive result across the evening, placings then counted down with a single point between each successive player on the table.

Congratulations to Franck on the win and thanks to all those who came along to make another successful, well contested, and well fed, tournament.

Final table:
1. Great to see the Legend back.

Lots of games and lots of goals but most importantly, lots of fun and an opportunity for players to enjoy more table football in Victoria.

Another enjoyable evening and needless to say.......

Subbuteo was the Real Winner!"

Northern Phoenix on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/780610992079187

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; This is the only club in the north of France, a region where most of the best players decided years ago to play for foreign clubs. Starting a new club is always a challenge, in particular in a region with no tradition of Subbuteo. Fortunately, the motivation of organizers made miracles happen. Weekly trainings are organized with some new players taking part but also friends from belgian clubs. The club had the first tournament under WASPA banner on thursday and dur to limited space, it was decided to limit to 10 players. For this first "promotional tournament", Wattrelos players had the visit of Romania's Cezar Stoilescu, who was spending a few days in the area, but also some players travelling for other regions and even 2 Belgians.

After groups sessions played in games of 20 minutes and semi-finals, local player David Sardi de Letto faced AS Hennuyer's Jordan Bonte in the final. Enthusiasts and competitors alike came together to vie for a spot in the prestigious tournament. John Moore, known as the godfather of Irish Subbuteo, with his extensive World Cup experience, dominated the Veteran competition, securing the top spot with an impressive 19 points. The battle for the second spot was closely contested between Gerry Harrington and Adrian Pigott, with only a point separating them at 15 and 16 points, respectively. However, Gerry's narrow victory over Adrian in the opening round ensured his place on the Republic of Ireland team. Tralee & Munster Subbuteo Clubs David Elton displayed remarkable resilience across the rounds, finishing with 11 points, while William Magnier strategic gameplay earned him a solid 8 points. Despite their best efforts world cup vet Nick Moore and John Kinsella were positioned lower on the table, underscoring the competitive nature of the event. The tournament was not just a display of skill but also a celebration of the spirit of Subbuteo, paving the way for future thrilling encounters in the sport.

In the Open category, Ireland's pro, Mark Farrell, emerged victorious, facing stiff competition, notably a tight 1-0 win against Irish international player Oisín Mór in the opening round game.

I managed to score the leading goal in both matches against Mark, but he won the first game 3-1, and we drew 1-1 in our second game.

Oisín Mor, with close games against Andy losing 1-0 and Drawing 1-1. Well done Oisín, showed exceptional skill but ended the event with 1 point due to the tough competition.

The day was marked by exhilarating matches and commendable sportsmanship, setting a high standard for future competitors in the world of table soccer.

As the Irish qualification event for the Table Soccer (Subbuteo) World Cup 2024 concludes, Ireland looks forward to sending a team to Tunbridge Wells, England, in September this year. They will proudly wear the national colors and compete against teams from around 30 nationalities, representing their home countries in this esteemed international event.

Team so far to represent Ireland is open Mark Farrell and Andy Fitzpatrick.

Vets John Moore and Gerry Harrington.

Under 16 Daniel Kaliszewski.

Under 12 Elliot Fitzpatrick.

Open table:
1. The format was a round robin group stage with the top 2 playing off in a Grand Final for honours.

Adrian stormed out of the blocks with convincing wins over Benjamin and Peter in the first two rounds. Meanwhile, former Asian junior champion Benjamin scored a very late goal (finishing off a beautiful sequence of quick flicks) to snatch a surpise draw against Benny.

This meant that Adrian had secured his spot in the grand final, with Benny needing to beat Adrian in the final group round to get to the final. As it turned out, Benny overcame Adrian in a very tight 1-0 game to finish top of the round-robin group.

In the grand final, it was an exciting match with Adrian's pacy attacking game against Benny's counter attacking strategy. Taking advantage of the few chances with some clinical finishing, Benny came out tops with a 3-1 victory - despite a beautiful goal of the day by Adrian.

In the 3rd / 4th placing match, Benjamin came out trumps over an improving Peter.

All in all, it was a fun day of flicks with good company. A great way to kick start 2024!

Happy New Year to the Australian Subbuteo table football community from Western Flickers, and may 2024 be a fantastic table football year for everyone !

1. I hope the new year will bring you a lot of satisfaction, good health and prosperity. Of course 2024 will give you many opportunities to play great games of Subbuteo table football.

Having a look in the mirror, the last 12 months have been epic with more than 400 tournaments played under WASPA banner. We have seen huge developments in England and great activty in different nations such as Australia, South Africa, Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Ireland, Wales,... We were glad also to see some tournaments in Austria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Finland, Malta, Scotland, Spain, France, Greece, Japan, Norway, Singapore, the USA and Switzerland. We also had for the first time a Subbuteo tournament played in Mongolia and we are extremely proud it was played under WASPA banner.

We love the fact tournaments played with the old rules become more and more important. England, Italy and Greece have already old rules tournaments played under WASPA banner and we are sure the development will continue.

The different rankings have been a source of motivation for players and clubs but it's important to repeat once again that ranking points should not be a priority for players. The important things in the WASPA circuit remain the promotion of the game, the connection between players from different games, the creation of dynamic regional circuits and of course the fact that attending tournaments is a good way to practice and to have something more than "training sessions" or "friendly games".

The rankings of clubs have been extremely interesting to follow and now that we have clubs ranked in 3 tables (top clubs, Development league and Conference league), every club can find a good source of motivation to host and play WASPA tournaments.

We must continue to focus on the youth. It's sad that we only have 8 clubs in the "ranking of clubs of juniors" as I believe we have a huge potential to create something much bigger. Never forget that the youth is the future of the game!

Not everything was perfect and I think we have some other points to improve:

- some clubs and players ignore the WASPA handbook and I think it's important to have tournaments announced a few days in avdance in order to give a fair chance to any player to registr in due time.

- some nations still don't support the WASPA circuit. We have seen that WASPA helped the game to grow tremendously in several nations so it is totally unacceptable that some national associations continue to forbif clubs to organize WASPA tournaments. This point makes me extremely angry and upset.

- fair-play remains the key of success. It's extremely rare that we have problems of behavior in tournaments but it should absolutely never happen. Those who play WASPA events should understand that they compete for fun and to promote the game!

- a small detail is that when somebody organizes a tournament, a winner should always be decided. It's extremely complicated to keep records when the organizers says there are tied players at first place (!)

- If you never read the WASPA handbook, you can simply ask me a copy.

Having said all this, I think we can now focus on the future. The WASPA circuit is working really well and it's very exciting to see the enthusiasm of players and clubs. We just really hope we can have tournaments played in more nations in the future! Once again, every national association should see how the English Subbuteo Association is working and how the WASPA circuit has helpd the game in England. This must be a source of inspiration for all other countries!

My last wish of course is to have a big WASPA week-end organized sometimes in the future. We don't need a WASPA world cup but a real big week-end where players from different nations could meet, play a lot of games and enjoy meeting players from different araes. Candidatures are welcome!

Finally, any person ready to help to run the WASPA circuit can of course offer support as it becomes really hard to do everything alone. I'm loonking for help for the following things:

- writing stories about tournaments for the WASPA blog;

- help in development of the WASPA circuit in countries where not many tournaments are yet organized;

- People who can search for partners and possible sponsors.

Thank you once again to all those who have organized tournaments in the last few months. I'm sure 2024 will be extremely good and we'll have many developments in different countries!

Keep on flicking!

Vincent Coppenolle, WASPA organizer!
Vincentcophttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05227083258147302383noreply@blogger.com0
