WASPA Round-Up: International Action Across the World

The latest round of WASPA tournaments saw players competing under both modern FISTF rules and traditional old rules, with events staged across Europe and South Africa.

In Italy, Marco Perotti claimed the Regional Tournament title in Rome, while England hosted no fewer than three FISTF events. Terry Arnold topped a 26-player field in Worthing on June 28, before Brandon Lavender won a second Worthing event the following day. Meanwhile, Richard Roper emerged victorious in Stourbridge.

Malta's tournament in Attard was won by Robert Farrugia, ahead of Stanley Farrugia, while Ektoras Bartzis triumphed in Achaioi, Greece. In Ireland, David Elton took first place in Tralee, and Jason Kennedy was the winner in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The traditional game was represented by the Solent tournament in England, where Jason Christopher finished first ahead of Steve Smith and Nigel Morgan.

Latest results from around the world – May 2026

The WASPA circuit continues to prove just how vibrant and accessible table football can be, with a series of events held across Austria, Malta, Romania and England in recent days.

From experienced international players to local club enthusiasts, WASPA competitions once again delivered competitive, friendly and high-quality table football for everyone involved — a true reflection of the spirit of the circuit.

In Austria, the monthly tournament of the Phoenix club in Vienna gathered eight players competing in a knock-out format, with each player guaranteed three matches. Austrian legend Erich Hinkelmann showed his class by taking the title, defeating Jürgen Lizar in the final.

Austria was particularly active, as two additional events were organised during the Baumfalken Cup. On May 1, the Old Rules tournament attracted nine players from Austria and Germany, offering a nostalgic return to classic Subbuteo. Played with traditional equipment and rules dating back to 1979, the event highlighted the diversity of the WASPA circuit. Marcel Kwiatkowski impressed by overcoming several experienced opponents to take the title.

Robert Green & Alfred Strommer

The consolation tournament of the Baumfalken Cup further underlined the international dimension of WASPA, with 12 players from six different countries competing. Australia’s Bob Green emerged victorious after defeating Italy’s Alessandro Casanova in the final. The event also benefitted from prestigious support, with the trophy sponsored by the Austrian State Secretary for Sport, Mrs. MMag. Michaela Schmidt.

In Malta, the Attard club welcomed special guest Joe Parody from England. A friendly five-player WASPA event was organised, once again demonstrating how the circuit creates opportunities for players of all levels to compete and connect. Stanley Farrugia claimed first place.

Meanwhile in England, North Shields Subbuteo Club hosted a six-player round-robin tournament on May 8. Nick Pearson continued his excellent form, following up last month’s success with another victory.

Finally, in Romania, the historic first FISTF Satellite tournament in Bucharest also featured a WASPA event. Five players took part in the consolation competition, where England’s Jason Christopher took the honours. Great credit goes to Cezar Stoilescu and his team for organising such a memorable international weekend.

the WASPA circuit offers fantastic playing opportunities, bringing together players of all backgrounds, ages and levels in a welcoming and competitive environment.

A Busy Weekend on the WASPA Circuit

The WASPA circuit enjoyed another highly successful weekend, with tournaments and events taking place across Europe. From France to Romania, Malta, Italy, and England, players once again proved the dynamism and growth of subbuteo at both local and international levels.

Wattrelos FISTF Satellite: Competition and Collaboration

The FISTF Satellite hosted in Wattrelos, in the North of France, was a major highlight of the weekend. With more than 40 players competing, the event welcomed participants from France, Belgium, and Germany, confirming its strong international appeal.

Alongside the Open and U16 official competitions, several additional tournaments were organised under the WASPA banner. The Friday evening WASPA tournament went far beyond a simple warm‑up session for the nine players involved, with Sébastien Rochez emerging victorious. Due to his high ranking in the Veterans category, however, he was unable to take part in the Satellite on Saturday.

With table availability limited on Saturday, the 14 players involved in the consolation competitions were divided into two separate tournaments of seven players each. Didier Van Renterghem and Vincent Coppenolle claimed victory in their respective events, while the host club of Wattrelos celebrated having two finalists: Jean‑Michel Cordier and Jean‑Jacques Trichot.

Reflecting on the event, Vincent Coppenolle underlined the importance of such initiatives:
“These events prove that FISTF and WASPA can work together. The feedback from the players was amazing, and everyone was happy to play more than just friendly games after the group stage of the Satellite.”

A Welcome Revival in Romania

In Romania, the subbuteo scene returned to action after a challenging period marked by several weeks without competition. The Bucharest players took the opportunity to welcome Paul Andreas, a Cypriot player based in London, by organising a special WASPA tournament in his honour.

Paul Andreas claimed the win, but one of the standout moments of the tournament was the noticeable improvement shown by Bogdan Panait, who delivered excellent performances throughout the day. Looking ahead, Bucharest is now preparing to host its first-ever FISTF Satellite — an important milestone for the development of the game in Romania.

Monthly Action in Malta

In Malta, the H’Attard players ran their regular monthly WASPA event. Robert Farrugia delivered a flawless performance, finishing the tournament undefeated and claiming the title as the undisputed winner of the day.

Old Rules Tournaments in Italy and England

Two Old Rules tournaments also featured in this busy weekend.

In Italy, SC Alba Roma organised a league-format tournament in Grottaferrata, with six players competing against one another. Marco Perotti, from Terni, took the top spot after consistent performances throughout the competition.

In England, the fifth stage of the English Championship was held at the home of Surrey Saracens. The event once again highlighted the strong organisation and hospitality of the host club. Victor Jones claimed victory in the main event, while Richard Myers won the Plate competition.

Adam Wells paid tribute to those involved in making the event a success:
“Big thanks to Charles Lee Fenton for being the hostess with the mostest, and to the Surrey crew for setting up and taking down. Congratulations as well to Simon Goodman and Richard Myers for winning the main and plate events respectively.”

A Circuit That Keeps Growing

From large international Satellites to intimate local tournaments, this weekend once again demonstrated the strength and diversity of the WASPA circuit. High participation, competitive spirit beyond main events, and cooperation with FISTF continue to provide players with meaningful playing opportunities across Europe.

The momentum is clearly there — and the weeks ahead promise even more exciting developments.

Here is a summary of results from tournaments held in England, Malta, Australia, Italy and South Africa. Special thanks to all organizers who keep Subbuteo alive and focus on helping new players to get experience!
We are more than convinced that WASPA events remain very important to develop our beautiful game. 

Players in Brisbane

Among the recent events held in January, we are happy to see action in Brisbane, Australia. The latest tournament took plae at the Sundowner hotel in Caboolture and local players had the visit of Japanese player Tomoki Ono. Gus Gillespie won the grand final against Gareth Whalley (4-2).

The Pedmore tournament was part of the English Subbuteo Championship. Chris Short (Pedmore TFC) managed to win the final against Sam Curtis (Yorkshire) on shots (3 v 1) after a close and tactical affair which also went to golden goal, where they could still not be separated while Mick Hammonds (Wolverhampton) and Aaron Skinner (Bristol) made it the the semi-final and Michael Mayes (Godiva) won the Plate final, beating Simon McMurray 4-0. Connor Gregory was the Under 18's category Winner with Colchester's Jamie Warren taking the Runner Up spot.

The second tournament in Caterham was another success. Players from "That Retro Place Subbuteo Club" spent some great time and Adam Welle was the undefeated winner.

Old rules events are still the priority for players in Terni where the local club held their 12th (and then last for this season) tournament with Marco Perotti taking the honors.

Richard Roper won the latest Stourbridge Casual Subbuteo meet, finishing on top of a group of six players.

In South Africa, Ian Clarke dominated the recent New year Cup organized by the ETS club.

The Victus Calabria boys had a different venue for their latest event. The time the event took place in Catazanro instead of Lamezia Terme and Vittorio Giummo proved to be the man of the day!

Stanley Farrugia won his first tournament for a long time in Malta when finishing on top of the 5th event of the season in H'Attard.

Finally, the CHASERS New Year Open took place on Sunday with 30 players travelling to Dagenham for another fantastic day of table football. Gary Gladwell and his friends make a great events and had the vist of a special guest as Australia's Bob Green was taking part. Bob managed to reach the semi-finals but the big winner of the day was Kye Arnold who defeated Malcolm Jamieson in the final. Congratulations to the others winners: Rob Fitch (Stanway) in the Plate, Jack Cossington (Chasers) in the Shield and Hadley Chapman (Kent) as best junior.

Last week-end, Yorkshire Phoenix organized another fantastic event as the Yorkshire International Open was a success with more than 50 players travelling from different countries to take part. Once again, organizers proved there is a strong partnership bewteen FISTF and WASPA and consolation events were held under WASPA banner. *Scotland's and Golazzo's Marco Bevilacqua defeated Craig Heward (Yorkshire) on shots in the Plate final while Malta's Gabriel Ebejer (Bormla) took the best against Brendan Ashley (London Road/Yorkshire) in the Shield final.

First WASPA tournament of 2026 in Malta

The first WASPA tournament of the year took place this week-end in Malta and consisted in a group of 5 players. The tournament was organized by H'Attard Subbuteo Club and Robert Farrugia Randon took the win, while Vincent Mifsud and Mark Baldacchino finished joint runners-up on equal points and goal difference. Special mention to the club youngster Luke Xerri, who continues to show clear improvement tournament after tournament.

South Devon, England, November 9 2025

WASPA complete. A really enjoyable day shared with other enthusiasts. Great thanks to all who travelled to the sunny South West on a very wet day!

Malcolm Jamieson, Stuart Briffett, Tony McCann, Phil Bryant and Andy Jarvis joining five of our regular club members Simon, Oakley, Bob, Bill and Marcus. 

Nice for our players to compete against better players and we learned a great deal. Malcolm and Tony shared much of their big game experience and gave some brilliant advice for us to act upon. 

Congratulations to Marcus Ellis who lifted the SDS Plate trophy.

Special congratulations to our WASPA trophy winner Bob Fairbrother who defeated Malcom Jamieson 1-0 in the final. Both had been in scintillating form on their respective runs to the final. Bob stayed calm when under intense pressure from Malcolm having taken the lead early in the second half. Was a wonderful game to watch with top quality play on display. 

It has been a real privilege watching our club grow. I have met great people and made new friends. The willingness of all to contribute enabled us to host this event today. From learning the new game of Subbuteo to slowly improving our equipment. We have a competitive league and cup format between our players, a website, club jersey and additional subbuteo paraphernalia. 

We couldn’t do it without a great venue. The White Hart Modbury, many thanks to Gareth and the gang for being generous host.

October 2025: Summary of a few great tournaments held in the last few weeks

After a successful start of the new season, we asee many clubs organising fantastic Subbuteo tournaments under WASPA banner. We are very proud to collect here some results of the latest events held in Ireland, England, Malta, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands. Thanks to the organizers who publish great stories of their tournaments. We are looking forward to seeing more tournaments in the next few weeks.

Cork, IRL, September 28 2025

The recent Cork Open Subbuteo Tournament was held in The SMA, Wilton, Cork, Ireland. This is the first Major Subbuteo Tournament held in Cork for almost 50 years. William Magnier having formed the Subbuteo & Table Football Cork Club about a year and a half ago, it was a pleasure and a privilege to hold a Leg of The Irish Circuit for the first time ever. Organisers of the day were Mario Frittelli and Barry Higgins, and William ran like clockwork. Special thanks to John Moore for his expertise and experience.

Players from Ballymena, Dublin, Bray, Wexford, Tralee, Offaly, Waterford, Cork and indeed the UK and Italy made the long trip to Cork for what we hope will be the first of many successful tournaments.

The Spacious Main Hall in SMA Parish Centre was the ideal venue, with private parking and easy access. Special thanks to Catherine Magnier, Evelyn Magnier and Barry Higgins for providing food, drinks and snacks.

Mark Farrell won the Main Competition, beating Kenny Beggs in the Final.

Dario Bilucaglia won the Plate Final beating David Elton.

Vicenç Prats opens the season with a triumph in Montornès in the most crowded tournament on the Catalan Circuit

The Catalan Table Football Circuit 2025-2026 kicked off last Sunday, September 28, in Montornès del Vallès with a tournament that will remain in the memory. With 34 players registered —an absolute record for the Circuit— and finally 33 effective participants after the last-minute withdrawal of Sergi Ribé, the event highlighted the growing strength and appeal of the competition. Among the participants, three new faces: the Mallorcan Josep David Somoza , the Occitan Ludovic Beauvais and the return, more than two years later, of the Barcelonan Xavier Vallvé.

The day started after 9am with an intense and emotional moment: a minute of silence in memory of the recently deceased Joan Flores, a much-loved teammate on and off the playing field.

The tournament was of a very high standard and culminated in the victory of Vicenç Prats, who prevailed in the final against Àlex Araujo from Mataró. Both finalists had overcome top-level rivals in the semifinals: Prats against Fabio Mastroianni and Araujo against Ferran Coll.

And the consolation champion, Marc Ligos, also receiving recognition from the Montornès team.

The increase in competition was also noticeable in the consolation tournament, where a player in Marc Ligos ' category took the title by defeating local representative Toni Hernández in the final .

The next Catalan Circuit tournament will take place in Breda, on November 30. The rest of the dates and venues for the tournaments for this 2025-2026 season will be announced soon, which is expected to be as exciting or more exciting than the previous one.

The Rebels Genova keep on working with the youth and their latest developments are impressivle. The second WASPA tournament of the season took place last Saturday with 16 players, including a visitor from the neighboring club Ligures Genova. Samuele Bignardi took the honors after defeating Alberto Capoferri in the final.

The Chasers Autumn Open took place last week-end and had a great turnout of 25 players taking part. Special guest of the day was Svein Arne Brekke from Norway. Joe Harrington (Haverhill) was the surprising winner of the Open tournament after beating Malcolm Jamieson in the final. Adam Jackson won the Plate, Martin Colwell won the Shield and Hadley Chapman won the Junior final.

Congratulations to the Chasers club for raising £80 for Gold Geese Children's Cancer Charity. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the collection.
