A second WASPA title for Chessray Jooste
Saturday 22 March 2014, Pretoria, South Africa : The Pretoria Flickers Club staged it's 2nd event for the year, namely the "Founders Cup". This event will become an annual feature on the PFC calendar as it marked the celebration of PFC's 1st year in existence (PFC was founded on 24 March 2013).
The matches produced low scoring results as players adopted cautious approaches, ensuring very tightly contested matches. In the last match-up Jayden (0) v (2) Chessray, the result turned out to be very significant, as a win for the 2013 Champion, Jayden, would see him (Jayden) succesfully defend his Founders Cup title ! However, the win for Chessray ensured that he equalled the table topping Julianon 5 points to force the event into a 1st Place Play-off final ! After normal time & extra time, Chessray triumphed 4-3 on shots over Julian.
Congratulations to Chessray for winning your 2nd WASPA title !!! Elsewhere, a very good 2nd place to Julian as he ended the day as the only undefeated player, and the only player not to concede a goal on the day !!
Final Standings
1. Chessray Jooste
2. Julian vd Merwe
3. Adrian Otto
4. Jayden vd Merwe
5. Kegan vd Merwe

Leste Cup 2014
On friday, the Leste March cup managed to attract 12 players. Players were placed in 4 groups without any seeding, thus luck of the draw played an important part in progression to the next stage. The brief write up as follows:
Group format: basically, we wanted players to have equal number of games, have more winners & prizes. After much deliberation we decided on this format:
- Each group were divided into 3 category namely winner, middle & bottom.
- Each winner of the group will progress to group A semis
- middle placed in group B semis
- bottom placed in group C semis
Group A played for top prize which included a box of chocolates + Snake bases, courtesy of our flicking friend namely Daniel Scheen (Tchaa4), who had graciously sponsored a set of bases as prize, while Group B & Group C played for the right to win chocolates
Groups: the draw was made and crowd favorites Den Mulia & Michael Chong were drawer in Group A while the drakhorse Rudy was in Group D paired with TFAS president, Kok Wee. Seasoned players Vikas was paired with home grown hot shots Azhar & Galvin while Antonio from Hong Kong Dragons club was with another seasoned played Wee Lik. The grouping as follows:
Group A: Den Mulia Yusni, Michael Choong & Nic Tan
Group B: Antonio Carabillo, Muhd Fadhly Fahmi & Soh Wee Lik
Group C: Muhammad Azhar Yusri, Galvin Ho Zi Rong & Vikas K Chandiramani
Group D: Rudy Hesty Roselan, Tan Kok Wee & Mohd Fauzi
Games: the group games had several tensed games including Den v Michael 2-2 draw, Vikas v Azhar 0-0 draw & Rudy v Kok Wee 2-2 draw. However after the end of the group battles the favorites qualified tops in their groups.
Next round
Group A (winner group): Den v Antonio dished out many heart pounding moments and when the game ended in a stalemate a sudden shoot out had to determine the winner where Den won. Rudy v Vikas was played in an open attacking manner. Both had their moments but in the end Rudy prevailed.
3rd v 4th (winner group): Antonio won against Vikas by a solitary goal.
Group B (middle placed): Wee Lik v Michael was a battle of the veterans with the latter winning comfortably over the rusty Wee Lik. Kok Wee v Azhar had their moments with Azhar playing a brilliant counter attacking style however in the end Kok Wee manage it edge out his opponent
3rd/4th : Azhar win against Wee Lik by a single goal.
1st/2nd: Michael edged out Kok Wee on sudden death shoot out after their game ended in a stalemate.
Group C (bottom placed): Nic v Fadhly was a battle between newcomer & seasoned junior. The game was tough to call but Fadhly managed to win by a single goal. Galvin v Fauzi had to be abandon with Galvin progressing through as the latter had to rush off to work.
1st/2nd: Fadhly won against Galvin in an exciting 5 goal triller.
Final (winner Group): Den vs Rudy. Could Rudy do a double over Den after their recent meeting ended in an unexpected victory for Rudy or Gould Den get his revenge. A fast pace yet thigh marking affair better the top two Singapore players. Both did not disappoint the crowd with several breathtaking flicks, shots & saves. As the time trickled down, the favorite Den Mulia scored a goal via fast push and shoot method which the keeper failed to save. Rudy threw the "kitchen sink" to try get an equalizer and an opportunity arises in the last 40 seconds of the game. A clear chance with only the keeper to beat.. Rudy paused aimed & shoot .... But the shoot was to strong as it hit the cross bar & the keeper pushed it away to safety. In the end the crowd favorite, Den Mulia won the epic game.

Interview of Daniel Scheen
In our next interview, Panos Panagiotides has talked to Daniel Scheen, the world number 1 in the FISTF veterans ranking.
When did you first started to play Subbuteo and what was the first team you got bought?
I started in 1983, I played till 1990 but from 88 to 90 I didn't attend any more tournaments but I only played in my club (SC Verviers in this time). I don’t remember my first team but I had a complete box with pitch, plastic goals, one blue team and one red team. I have completely stopped for 20 years and start again in 2010.
How many years have you been playing and what are the main titles you have achieved in any level?
From 83 to 90 and from 2010 till today, I have won some international tourneys when I was 15 years old. I restarted and won (in vets category ) some national events, challengers or satellites (Eugies, Templeuve, Frameries and Verviers). I was later the winner at the GP of Belgium 2011, GP Spain 2012, Bronze medal at the world cup Manchester 2012, winner GP of Wales 2012, GP of Germany 2013, International Open Puylaurens 2013, International Open Leicester, International Open Glasgow, world ranking number 1 veteranss category since May 2013. I was finalist at the world cup 2013 in Madrid with the Belgian team. I had many emotions as well with the SC Stembert team!
What is the best thing about this game and why would you recommend it to someone?
I can share my passion with my son Noé (he’s world ranking U12 number 2), and it’s always better to see the kids around the pitch than in front of the tv screen playing video games. I Like big competitions, trips all over Europe, to see different countries. Table soccer offers me all those things.
Your most memorable moments from this game happy or even sad?
The goal for 3-0 against Massimo Bolognino during Italy–Belgium, it was 2-0 for me and I scored 3-0 with only 6 minutes to play, I knew that the match was won!
Who was your strongest opponent and who is your favorite player and why?
Since I restarted I had 2 guys who gave me a real lesson, Derk Conti and Carlos Flores. When those guys are playing right, it’s impossible to stop them! You can only say "well done!"
Is it a sport or a game ? what is your opinion about this question that many people ask?
I can ear this question since the 80th time. My opinion: it’s real sport!
What improvements would you like to see in the future and what would you suggest to improve things?
I have noticed since few months that it’s almost impossible to put the ball in the shooting area without the defender makes a free kick, so he can make a defense flick and put a figure in front of the ball, a rule could change this fact.
What would you recommend to someone who starts the game now? What are the secrets for top performance
Playing every day, alone for technical practices and with friends, thinking that success needs time and a lot of work.
Daniel's passport
Name: Daniel Scheen
Age: 44
Nation: Belgium
Club: SC Stembert
Type of figures/bases used: Tchaaa4 sniper LW (of course!)
Job: manager of a guest house near Spa / Francorchamps race track
Hobbies: travel, movies.

Interview of Grégory Le Gal
In our section with interviews, we don't publish only the answers of top players but also from fans from all over the world. Here is the Interview of Grégory Le Gal who lives in the South of France.
Name: Grégory Le Gal
Age: 40
Nation: France
Club: Table Football Provence
Type of figures/bases used: 2k4 figurines on tchaaa4 (sniper bases)
Job: project manager
Hobbies: subbuteo, rc plane and helicopters, cycling and football
When did you first started to play Subbuteo and what was the first team you got bought?
My first match was played in Milano, Italy, with Lucca (my cousin). It was in 1987. The first team I bought was France, of course.
How many years have you been playing and what are the main titles you have achieved in any level?
I started playing in the late 80s but I stopped form 1995 and 2013 so I am a real beginner again nowadays.
What is the best thing about this game and why would you recommend it to someone?
It is football! It's a perfect game to understand tactics in football and to have good time around a table without eating :)
Your most memorable moments from this game (happy or even sad)?
The most momorable was when I beat the neighborhood champion 1-0, with just one shot to goal for me in the whole game and too many shots on the posts and the bar for him. The saddest moment was when I came back to France and nobody knew what is subbuteo. As a consequence I had nobody to play with me.
Who was your strongest opponent and who is your favorite player and why?
My favorite player is Daniel Scheen because he's from Belgium and everybody knows "Belgium is über alles!" and he's so cool! He's the spirit of this sport!
The most difficult thing for me is to replace my figurines back in defense and to have good defensive blocks.
Is it a sport or a game? What is your opinion about this question that many people ask?
No doubt about the fact that IS A SPORT, because you have to train yourself, practice your fingers, your position around the table. It's a sport where that is not necessary to be a "physic monster".
What improvements would you like to see in the future and what would you suggest to improve things?
Changing rules to erase the "great wall of China" tactic (10 mens in defense on the shooting line).
What would you recommend to someone who starts the game now? What are the secrets for top performance?
You love real football? You will love table soccer! The secret is training, training and when you have time: training!

Interview of Elodie Bertholet
One of the top players of the international table football scene is the first player interviewed by Panos Panagiotides for the WASPA blog.
Q: When did you first started to play Subbuteo and what was the first team you got bought?
A: I started playing in 2003, the year of the world cup in Malta. I started playing at the Templeuve United club in Belgium.
Q: How many years you play and what are the best positions titles you have achieved in any level?
A: We have been 11 times ladies world champions and I wa spart of the team every year. I also reached the semi-finals of the individual world cup twice and became national champion one time.
Q: What is the best thing about this game and why would you recommend it to someone?
A: I believe this game needs a lot of intelligence and you must think really fast. It's also a good way for people who have too much energy to learn how to calm their nerves.
Q: Your most memorable moments from this game happy or even sad?
A: Every victory makes me happy. I don't like to lose.
Q: Who was your most difficult opponent to beat and who is your favorite player and why?
A: Françoise Guyot of France was a strong opponent. I also like Vito Di Ruggiero very much and I'm a fan of Italy's Massimiliano Nastasi.
Q: Is it a sport or a game? what is your opinion about this question that many people ask?
A: It remains a game and I play to have fun, even if I hate losing but I don't get ill when I lose games...
Q: What improvements would you like to see in the future and what would you suggest to improve things?
A: I have no idea.
Q: What would you recommend to someone who starts the game now? What are the secrets for top performance?
A: You must play a lot of smaller events before taking part in a Major because the level is very high and it's not easy for beginners to play only two games and then go back home, in particular when tournaments are played far away from your place. My secret to play well is to practice, practice and practice again and play a lot of games against stronger opponents.

Jose Carlos Guerrero wins in Madrid
Last week-end, the second WASPA tournament in Madrid was held in the premises of the Futbol Chapas store in Mostoles. There were nine players in two groups, the top 2 of each group played the semi-finals. 3 of the players were U15. The tournament was made under FISTF rules, without referees and with Subbuteo playing material only. The winnerof the event was Jose Carlos Guerrero.
Besides the tournament, there were some good news about local development as the "Subbuteo Futbolchapas Store Liga" will start last week-end of March until June, with Open and U15 categories. At the moment there are 10 players for the senior category and 8 for the U15 category. A Cup will be made on April 12th and the "World Cup" on 15th June.
Finally the local players started with regular activities in Madrid and with a permanent venue with a capacity of 6 tables. The location is open 7/7.
Well done and good luck to the Madrid players as all the good news will probably help to recruit more players in the future.

Peter Vahle wins in California
Things are moving up in the right direction in San Francisco, California where the second tournament of the Northern California Subbuteo Cup took place on saturday. The turnout was not big as only four players were present but everyone had good games. Peter Vahle finished on top of the league while Conan Mullen was second, George Vassiliades was third and Joe Schmidt was fourth.
First title for Frank Lannoy
Due to the Carnaval period and the usual holidays in Belgium, there was a poor turnout of four for the last tournament held by the club of SC Flanders in Hofstade-Zemst (Belgium). Because several players were missing, a new player took the honors. Frank Lannoy won his first WASPA title when finishing on top of a league system with Filip Van Hulle being second, Bert Feyens third and Steven De Greveleer fourth.

Andrea Strazza wins his first WASPA tournament
On March 5th, the Table Soccer Club Black Rose ’98 Roma (www.blackrose98roma.com and www.blackrose98roma.blogspot.it) organized the “Round 10” of the “W.A.S.P.A. Black League” at the “Black Rose Training Center” located in Fiumicino (Rome), Via delle Lampare 5.
It was a very nice evening tournament with 18 players attended for the third 2014 tournament. They were representative of two Italian Subbuteo associations (T.S.C. Black Rose ’98 Roma and S.C. Fiamme Azzurre) all ready to defy the invincible Enrico Guidi.
The T.S.C. Black Rose ’98 Roma decided to organize a tournament under the Swiss system so all players could play five games. At the end of the fifth round Andrea Strazza have collected 13 points (thanks to a goal 10 seconds before the end of the match against Andrea Capelli and to a penalty only 2 minutes before the end of the match against Gabriele Silveri). At the second place we find Andrea Capelli at 10 points. For the third place it was necessary to calculate the value opponents and the bronze medal was for Enrico Guidi (9 points and value opponents 45). The 4th place was for Luigi Barone (9 points and value opponents 40), followed by Gabriele Silveri (9 points and value opponents 40).
The WASPA tournament in Fiumicino have registered a surprice: Andrea Strazza has won his first WASPA tournament even if the “invincible subbuteo machine”, Enrico Guidi, don’t lose any match. In the months to come we will see if there is something new in Fiumicino.
Once a month T.S.C. Black Rose ’98 Roma will organize other W.A.S.P.A. tournaments looking at the different needs (materials and rules) of F.I.S.T.F. and Subbuteo players.
Final ranking:
1. Andrea Strazza
2. Andrea Capelli
3. Enrico Guidi
