Giuseppe Tardiota makes it again

Woody Point, 9am on October 28th.
32nd Brisbane Subbuteo WASPA Tournament

We started the day with ten competitors, thanks to a couple of fly ins from Sydney. Herman and his son Oliver flew up specially for the tournament, and both were to do very well.
Because of the numbers we had two groups of five, of which the top two from each would meet in the semi finals. Our two under 12’s Oliver and Wil were paired with Rik, Gus and Gerry.  The second group had Herman, Giuseppe, Gareth, Andrew R and Shane. Both groups looked tough, with no garuntees for anyone.

The first round saw Oliver storm home, scoring three in the last five minutes to win the U12 battle 3-0. Gerry started shakily against Gus, who capitalised with some fine goals and lost 5-0. Hermann started his away day with a 1-0 win over last months finalist Andrew whilst Gareth and Shane finished up 2-2. The two U12’s then faced serious opposition in Rik for Oliver and Dad for Wil. Dad won 4-1 and Rik won 2-1, and the shrewed Oliver picked up that Rik was playing with 12 men (we’ll be keeping a closer eye on Rik from now J ). Andrew got to winning ways beating Gareth 3-0 and a very close battle between Giuseppe and Hermann saw the Italian come out on top with a 2-1 win. Hermann had a penalty saved at the end of the first half, and saw a shot rebound out from the inside of the post.
Midway Gerry managed to a narrow 1-0 win over young Oliver, Hermann making up for his previous misses beat Shane 4-0 whilst Andrew and Giuseppe fought out a 0-0 draw.

The fourth round saw the big upset of the day, Gerry over turning Brisbanes #1 3-0. The other game in this group was a eye brow lifter too, Oliver drew 0-0 with last months winner Gus. Oliver’s defence play was really top notch.  Giuseppe narrowly beat Shane 3-2 and Hermann still on a rampage beat Gareth 4-0.

The last round in group 1 saw Rik play Gus with a loser heading out of the competition, Gerry topping the group with 9 points. Gus only needed a draw. 9 seconds into the game and Gus was 1-0 up after a quick attack and finish. Rik did get one back and pressed hard, but his normally deadly shooting didn’t turn up, the game finished 1-1 and was probably the first tournament in Brisbane where Rik missed the semis. Giuseppe secured his spot in the semis with a 4-0 win over Gareth, Andrew beat Shane 2-0 but it wasn’t enough for him to progress.

So Giuseppe and Gus lined up in the first semi, the only unbeaten players thus far, and Gerry faced our visitor Hermann.  Giuseppe playing in his penultimate Brisbane comp before moving back to Europe was determined to do well, and his determination payed off. Playing the better Subbuteo, he won 2-0 to seal his place in the final. The other semi also finished 2-0 to set up a rematch between Italy and Germany.

It was a very tense final, as they often are,  Giuseppe though making the breakthrough and scoring well. Hermann was not to be out done and roared back within 2 minutes to equalise. The first half though finished 2-1 to Giuseppe scoring another great goal just before the whistle. Hermann pushed hard but it was Giuseppe who got the next and last goal to win the final 3-1. Hermann hit the post at least twice in the second half, never giving up.

It was a great competition and great to have visitors from other clubs. Sadly our next competition is the last for  Giuseppe, but we are hoping to make a special occasion of it.

This saturday a small tournament was held in Palmerston North, New Zealand to celebrate the visit of Australia's Adrian Connolly. The event was some kind of "trans-Tasman sea tournament". Local players really enjoyed having Adrian with them. It was a great tournament played with great enthusiasm. NZ players would like to repeat this type of events in the future. Adrian Connolly finished on top of the group of 4 while Ignacio Lopez Campbell was runner-up, Rodrigo Cardenas was third and Mexico's David Pacheco took the fourth place.

Jurong Central October 17 tournament

12 players competed in this month’s JCSC League, at the usual Jurong Central Subbuteo Clubhouse. The players were split into 2 groups of 6, with Group B notably being the Group of Death, where not a single match was easy for any of the players. The top players from the respective groups will battle each other for the top prize. The 2nd from each group would battle for 3rd/4th placing, and so on.

Group A Games
Anas cruised relatively easily to the top of the table, by winning all his group games, with Bernard Lim close behind in second, only having lost to Anas in the first round of group games. The youngest player, Isaac Lim, did quite well finishing in 4th, after holding veteran player Ezan, and winning against seasoned player Rizal T.

Group A Standings:
1st: Anas
2nd: Bernard Lim
3rd: Rizal T
4th: Isaac Lim
5th: Ezan
6th: Bolkiah

Group B Games
Group B was notably the Group of Death as all the players are skilled and could not be underestimated. There were a handful of games that ended in a draw, with Michael, Haikal and Fauzi bagging 3 draws each. Ultimately it was Rudy who took the top spot with Michael in second, where both players ended the group games undefeated.

Group B Standings:
1st: Rudy
2nd: Michael
3rd: Nic
4th: Fauzi
5th: Haikal
6th: Simon

Final
It was yet another tight affair between Rudy and Anas in yet another final. Rudy dominated most of the game as Anas failed to maintain any sort of possession. However, Anas managed to defend well even after numerous corner flicks coming from Rudy. The game ended 0-0 at full time, bringing the Final to Sudden Death. Anas managed to utilize his possession and scored the crucial golden goal.

A first tournament in Valparaiso

From left to right: Flavio Riccomagno, Marco Galindo, Fernando López, Rodrigo López, Benito López, Ignacio López and Andrés Torres.

On October 10 seven players attended the very first tournament played in Valparaiso, Chile under WASPA banner. There were some new players from Chile and there was a special mention for Benito López who is only 11 years old but he is a very enthusiastic young subbuteo player who showed lots of skills. Ignacio Lopez Campbell also reported that he expects more tournaments to be played in Viña del Mar and in Valparaíso in the future. Both cities are “next door” neighbours and there are good plans to work together.

As for the tournament, Flavio Riccomagno defeated Rodrigo López in the final to claim the trophy. Congratulations!

Lincoln Flickers Yorkshire/Sheffield Invitational

Richard Stock (London Road SC) takes first prize at Lincoln Flickers first WASPA of the season despite an early setback; Andy Boyer won this tie 2-1 in a very tight affair. Boyer could have wrapped things up in round 4 but for Mat Akin spoiling the party with a 2-0 win. This left all 3 players on 9 points and so a 5th round was played. Richard wore Matty’s resilience and finished a comfortable 4-0 in the end while Boyer was held by Pascal Carrassi from Javea club Marina Citerior 2-2 for second on the day. Andrew Garbutt pipped Atkin into 3rd on goal difference, his highlight beating his Sheffield rival 3-0 in round 2; a fixture to be repeated next month when Andrew goes to play his Subaleague International match at the Jetpac Arena for the season’s 3 year finale.

The games of the tournament all involved Pascal; his 7-3 win over John Devaney a real humdinger! The 2-2 draw to Boyer and Connor Atkin holding Pascal 1-1 a great achievement. Connor received the Junior Star Award. Pascal’s daughter Lisa deserves a special mention for having tough games and her bravery in defeat – well done, keep going, you WILL get there! She left with a small trophy and a smile 😊

Sincere thanks to all who made it an enjoyable day. The next WASPA will be during Lincoln Christmas Market weekend Sunday 10 December for Copa del Santa – come join us!

Miguel Ángel Matabuena (FM La Plazoleta) and Manuel Romero (Europa FC TSC) made it to the semi-finals. Congratulations to everyone and huge thanks to John Field for his support to the WASPA circuit. Good luck to the Gibraltar association as they will host the FISTF world cup in September 2018 and the work to prepare a fantastic tournament is already in progress.

A 9th WASPA title for Bevin Reed

Saturday 14 October 2017, Pretoria, South Africa:
The 2017 edition of the League 2 Cup attracted a field of 12 entries, including debutant Chris Abrahamse visiting from the Centurion area of our province.
The event started with an exciting match between 2016 League 2 winner Bevin Reed and Kegan vd Merwe with Bevin registering a 1-0 win. Further Round 1 action
saw Gary Downs (Easterns TFC) record a 3-0 win over Sherwin Reed to lead the standings. Then, with only 2 minutes into his debut match Chris Abrahamse stunned Conway Julie to take a 1-0 lead, but after digging deep Conway levelled the match 6 minutes later - thereby avoiding a massive upset!
The pick of Round 2 matches saw an exciting match between Jayden vd Merwe and Gary Downs - with Jayden taking the lead and Gary getting an equaliser midway through the game, but with only 40 seconds left Jayden struck again to hand Gary his only defeat of the day.
Round 3 produced the match of the day between Chessray Jooste and Gary Downs - a round of applause sounded at the final whistle as the two players ended a 2-2 draw. Elsewhere, the impressive Stanton Nortjie beat Kegan vd Merwe by 1-0 to go into 2nd place on the standings!
In Round 4 action, Chessray & Jayden played out another thrilling 1-1 draw - the result not helping either's cause as Jayden had to settle for 3rd place overall & Chessray got the 4th spot.
Kegan then beat Julian vd Merwe by 1-0, but Julian got 5th place due to a superior goal difference over Kegan. Bevin's 1-0 victory over Marlin Boyd was a mere formality as Bevin had already secured the title as early as Round 3 - thanks to his dominant goal difference. Stanton continued his unbeaten run on the day by way of a 1-0 victory over Chris to clinch a surprising but well deserved second place. Imtiaz Ahmed then held the much fancied Gary Downs to a 0-0 draw, and Sherwin ended his day with a 1-0 victory over Conway.
A great day of Subbuteo action all round, with plenty of goals scored - with Bevin Reed lethal in front of goal, an effort which saw Bevin capture his 9th WASPA title to date!

As always, a big thank you to all who attended to make the day a great success.

Singapore Premier League: October 2017 results

League day 8 was the second last session for Singapore Table Football League 2017. Eventhought 5 players came, the players field were fill with recent Champions, notably Vikas; winner of Australian Satellite tournament in Perth & Bernard Lim; winner of last month IO tournament in Sydney. With current form on their side the 2 players were ready to out play local champions Anas & Rudy plus seasoned veteran Rizal T.

A round robin format was adopted, with each players playing 4 games.

1st Round
Rudy edging out Bernard 2-0 with the latter adopting the “Cheeky” Off Side trap (which  was never seen done before by him). On a few occasions the COS worked perfectly but alas his finishing let him down.
Anas again showed why he is Asian No.1, with his deadly finishing to register a comfortable 4-0 win against Rizal.

Round 2
Vikas was next against Rudy. Time & time again Vikas long flick shot trademark shots missed his mark & frustration got into his play. Rudy capitalised on this & ran out 4-0 winners.

Bernard vs Anas. Anas scored 1st but Bernard, fresh from his overseas win scored twice n kept the score at 2-1 till the final 3 minutes of full time. Nerves got to Bernard with Anas equalising with less then a minute & 1/2 to go. To add insult to injury, Bernard’s goalkeeper broke his arm hence a late substitution had to be made. With seconds left, Anas pushed for the last attack.. His attacking player got into the shooting area & with a delicate chip over the keeper, Anas scored .. final score Bernard 2 Anas 3.

Round 3
Vikas vs Anas. Again, Vikas took the game to Anas but the goalpost & some great goal keeping kept Vikas at bay. With quick precision & hard pressing Anas again came up tops & registered a 2-0 win.

Bernard vs Rizal T. Both players need victory to put pressure on the leaders & both did not disappoint. An all out assault by both players saw the score seesawing. However, Bernard took control with the 3rd & 4th goal to kill off Rizal’s attack. Final score Bernard 4 Rizal 3.

Round 4
Rudy vs Anas. Both having 100% winning squared up & within a minute of play, Rudy’s flick blunder resulted in a goal by Anas. Rudy chased the game & got the equaliser by mid game play but again Anas scored with a counter attack to take a 2-1 lead. Just before the break the score was tied 2-2 with Rudy scoring a perfect long distance flick which ball chipped over the keeper & into goal. In the 2nd half, both players went at each other but luck favoured Rudy who managed to score 2 more goals to end the score 4-2.

Vikas vs Rizal T. Both veterans played a fast paced game but Vikas shooting was more clinical hence winning 4-0.

Final Round
Rudy won 4-0 against Rizal T hence wrapping up the Oct title but his win was overshadowed by the battle of the recent overseas winners....Vikas vs Bernard. Apart from bragging rights the league final placing of 3rd & 4th were still up for grabs. Both players needed the win & both played their offensive game. Alas, Bernard outscored Vikas by 2 with Vikas scoring a late goal to end the game 2-1.

Oct Session Table
1st - Rudy - 4 wins
2nd - Anas - 3 wins
3rd - Bernard - 2 wins
4th - Vikas - 1 win
5th - Rizal

Join us again in November for TFAS league. With one more session to go & only marginal points separating the top 2 the final session could yet be the best one.

Alberto Gagliardi defeated Mario Marcolini in the final to win the tournament. Daniele Tombolini, an international football referee, presented the trophies to the winners. Congratulations to Alberto and the Macerata boys for their great efforts to promote old rules within the WASPA circuit.

A first tournament in Nevada City

The weekend of Oct 6-8, a WASPA Promotional tournament was scheduled by the California TSC, to welcome long-time flickers to compete in an official rules competition.  Nevada City, California provided a perfect weekend for outdoor play! The competition was balanced and many matches displayed excellent skill. Varant Kurkeyerian edged out Al deKelaita for the Open title. In a U6 friendly, Leif Bloomstrand showed off his ability and is destined to be a future flicker!

Gianfranco Grahonja wins in Trieste

There was another wonderful Subbuteo evening at "Trieste Trasporti" last Friday with the sixth edition of the Trieste WASPA Cup. Games were played on the four playing fields, while in the background it was possible to see the images of Italy's massive draw against Macedonia. After the group stage that decided the finalists in the very last session, a worthy final was played between Gianfranco Grahonja and Furio Segnani. Gianfranco took advantage, then Furio equalized two minutes before the end and while already paying attention to the extra-tima, Gianfranco doubled with a delightful land shot and won the cup. In third place came the unbeaten Vito Truglio, punished in the group by a draw against Dawor. Congratulations to all the participants!

Geoffrey Marain managed to win his 75th WASPA title after 4 individual victories in the Swiss ladder. Frank Lannoy was runner-up with 9 points while Vincent Coppenolle took the third place thanks to more goals scored than Geert Leys.
