Sydney (WS) (Australia), March 4 2025

A string of entries and then withdrawals left the numbers low for our March WASPA tournament and, sadly, our Western Sydney Subbuteo representatives outnumbered by those from the Northern Falcons. On the plus side, all the games could be played in the comfort of inside the clubhouse. With 5 players geared up to play, a full league format was used, with 20 minute games allowing everyone to play everyone else.

The opening round set the tone for the evening. Adrian E huffed and puffed but was, ultimately, rubbish, and Steve took advantage with a 1-0 win. Meanwhile Franck eased to a 2-0 victory over Adrian G. The two Adrians maintained this form for the rest of the evening, with neither managing to trouble the scoreboard at any stage during the evening! Adrian G did manage to keep a tight defense against Steve in the final game of the evening, picking up a second 0-0 draw (following the one against Adrian E) leaving him slightly ahead of Adrian E, but both rooted to the foot of the table.

Franck was on a roll and further commanding victories against Adrian E and Steve left him in a strong position at the top of the table heading into the final round. Steve had a mixed bag of results with a win, a loss and two draws, though one of those draws, against Eliot, had significant implications for the final match. Eliot sat out the first round with the bye but was, predictably, too good on the night for each of the Adrians, before hitting a snag with that 0-0 against Steve.

Which meant, heading into the final match against each other, Franck was heading the table with 9 points while Eliot was in second with 7. The two players lived up to the grand final nature of the fixture. Both players kept things tight in defense, with just the odd half chance each way opening up, but with no big misses for either player to regret. With Franck just needing the draw to take the title, his confidence grew as the minutes ticked down. Then, with just two minutes left on the clock, Eliot made the most outrageous curling flick, threading the needle between two expertly positioned defenders, in order to set himself up for a shot, which he converted with aplomb. Franck couldn't believe what he'd seen and Eliot, not known for outbursts of emotion in his mature years, yelled a loud 'yes!!' as the back of the net rippled. Franck needed to push for the equaliser with under two minutes left and this left him open to a second, counter-attacking goal, the final scoreline a cruel one for the player who had been two minutes away from claiming the title.

Eliot must now have a serious claim as the world's greatest exponent of the curled flick using flat bases, tonight used to directly win the tournament. A small but enjoyable tournament for the month, a good warm up for those present for our FISTF Satellite tournament being held in April. WASPA standings of February 2025

Dear friends, you will find here the updated WASPA standings at the end of February. We have added 28 tournaments in the records, and we are very happy to see the circuit going really well in several countries.

Excel file: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vSkW-ydC78N8OSMY5l7-5RkdqHwQBvU95TZUYCRaB1CAVszukSizSyBI0BxfJkZGg/pubhtml

A great turnout of 29 in Montornès, Spain

We have had events in Spain, England, Australia, Cyprus, Belgium, Ireland, South Africa and the Netherlands. There is no need to give too many details about results, but we are pleased to see some highlights of the month.

Rob O'Hare (left) wins in Andover

In Australia, our friends in Melbourne did an amazing job of promotion; The FISTF Grand Prix was a huge success and several WASPA events have been held during the long week-end. The Thursday tournament included visitors from several clubs and from New Zealand. On Saturday, the consolation tournament of the FISTF event was played under WASPA banner and on Sunday, there was another event for those who couldn’t play the team event. This is another sign of great collaboration between FISTF and WASPA.
Players in Nassogne (Belgium) for the latest Wamme SC tournament

In England, the efforts of the English Subbuteo Association deserve also respect. The national circuit has amazing numbers. The tournament in Andover attracted 38 players while the old rules circuit had a great turnout of 20 players for the Rainham tournament.

M. Kalopsidiotis & G. Zangylos in Cyprus

Besides the big events, regular midweek events have been organized by different clubs (London, Solent, Stourbridge, Worthing, Dudley-Kingswinford, Leicester, Morecambe Bay, Dagenham, Chesterfield, Haverhill, Milton Keynes, Yorkshire), which proves the game is going well and all kind of players can find tournaments in their respective areas.

Latest Northern Phoenix tournament in Australia

In Spain, the Catalan Circuit managed to attract 29 players for the stage held in Montornès. It’s exciting to see old and young players competing in the right spirit. The Irish circuit had also a first tournament in Donegal with 10 nice people taking part.

The results of the Glasgow Open consolation events will be added in the March rankings.

We still believe there should be more focus on the youth. Unfortunately, only 8 players are listed in the WASPA junior ranking of clubs and this is something we must absolutely improve and the young players are the future of the game.

Once again, thanks to all organizers who put energy into holding tournaments. The support of volunteers is the key to our success.

Colin Fletch and Jeff Parsons in Chesterfield, England

Don’t hesitate to announce your WASPA events and to send your results to vincentcoppenolle@gmail.com

If you see missing results, don’t hesitate to contact us!

Have a great week-end,

Vincent Coppenolle

Australia: Northern Phoenix WASPA – Thursday 06th February 2025

A relaxing and chilled Northern Phoenix WASPA was the perfect lead in event for the weekend’s AGP a couple of days later.

The occasion was marked by the participation of a number of interstate and overseas players wanting to secure a last minute hit-out prior to the Big Dance.

Conrad Mudge, Mike Phillips and Yago Dee made special appearances, the Tasmanian making his entrance fashionably late after a delayed flight meant he arrived in the Victorian capital six hours late.

Benji Batten had a great outing winning all his four matches to take out the evening’s honours. Beth Robin however pushed him all the way in their third round encounter, Mr MTFC scoring a buzzer beater in the final seconds to get over the line and keep his impressive record in check.

Having been absent from the game for a couple of decades, Mike Phillips strung together a number of impressive performances and showed great close control and tactical awareness. Conrad Mudge made the most of his trip across ‘The Ditch’ playing an exhausting six matches and Nathan Urbaniak keeps on going from strength to strength finishing up as runner-up.

Another enjoyable evening and needless to say.......

Subbuteo was the Real Winner!

WASPA results of tournaments played in England in January 2025

Dear Subbuteo friends, you are aware there are a lot of WASPA tournaments run in England and it's really complicated to publish a story for every tournament. Most of the time we only get results from organizers buyt no picture or report. We are pleased anyway to publish a summary of the resutls collected in January. Some clubs do an amzing job running WASPA nights and the English Subbuteo Association is doing a fantatsic job organising national circuit events under WASPA banner. We really appreciate that. Thanks to all organizers and congratulations to all the winners! If anyone is ready to write monthly article about events held in England, it would be nice contacting me at vincentcoppenolle@gmail.com

Vicenç Prats prevails in Montornès

Last Sunday, February 2, 29 players met in the 3rd Catalan Circuit tournament of the season in Montornès del Vallès. The competition brought together a total of 29 participants from all over Catalonia and Mallorca. This equals the record for attendance at a Circuit tournament.

The tournament ended with the victory of Vicenç Prats (Sarrià – Barcelona), who defeated Fabio Mastroianni (Mallorca) in a contested final that ended with the result 2-1. In fact, this was Prats' first participation in the Circuit this season, which explains his current position in the general classification. However, his victory has allowed him to regain first position in the individual ranking .

The young Mataró player Julià Rosa was the winner of the consolation tournament, beating his Iluro teammate, Cesc Vidal. In this way, he continues with the great progression in his sporting career, consolidating himself as one of the young promises of the Circuit.

Fabio Mastrioanni, Vincenç Prats and Julia Rosa

With this tournament, the Catalan Circuit reaches the midpoint of the season. Therefore, the next event, which will take place on March 30 in Girona, will be decisive for the players who aspire to qualify for the end-of-season playoffs. Thus, the participants will continue to accumulate points to secure a position among the top sixteen in the general classification.

Below, you can see the link to the results.

WASPA rankings of January 2025

The WASPA rankings of January are now available.

Excel file (rankings)

PDF file (results)

We have added 32 regional tournaments and 2 tournaments with the old rules in the records.

We are happy to see Germany, the USA and Japan hold their first tournaments, which means we have had tournaments in 20 different countries since the start of the season in September.

There were all types of events, sometimes very small with 3 players taking part, sometimes very big like the Leicester tournament, part of the English circuit, with 48 players. England had many tournaments in many different clubs but there is also a fantastic domestic circuit in Australia with tournaments held in many different cities.

Sometimes tournaments have the chance to attract players from different nations. It was great to see the Karlsruhe tournament attracted players from France, Switzerland and Italy.

Keep in mind all organizers are welcome in the WASPA circuit and that it's totally free to be included in the records.

For any question regarding the WASPA circuit, don't hesitate to send a message to vincentcoppenolle@gmail.com

Please use the same address for sending results.

I will stay at your disposal if you need details ;-)

Have a great week and keep on flicking!

January 2025: more results from Northern Ireland, Germany, Japan and Australia

More WASPA results from around the world. For the final note of January results, we received news from Northern Ireland, Germany, Japan and Australia. it's always exciting to see returning players and some new faces. It's also extremely important to remember that small events are also part of the development process in many different nations.

Thanks to contributors Martinog Bradley, Simon Stewart, Andrew Martini and Steve Dettre.

Derry, Northern Ireland

Derry City TFC recently held the ’Paul Boyle New Year Cup’ with 7 players divided in two groups. In the semi-finals, Martinog bradley defeated Ian Greer (3-0) while Barry Spence took the best on Lawrence Watson (4-1). Martinog won the final against Barry (1-0) while Dee Jenkins won the Plate final.

Hamburg, Germany

The Sankt Pauli players held their first WASPA for several years at their new venue on January 30. It was the club's first tournament for several years. The new venue, situated under the iconic South Curve at the Millerntor Stadion hosts many sports activities officially affiliated with the football club. On the night Marius took the honours but special mention to father and son Julian and Levy making their debuts who both recorded wins.

Tokyo, Japan

This week-end the Tokyo Sunzeol players held a small challenge cup under WASPA banner. Suguru Sugino, Tomoyoshi Ikeya and New Zealand's Andrew Martini were taking part. Andrew won the tournament on goal-difference while Suguru was runner-up.

The group is hoping to attract more players next time.

Another tournament will be held in March (see attached poster) and all ideas to promote the game in Japan and WASPA tournaments are always welcome!

Adelaide, Australia

We are extremely happy to see the first WASPA tournament taking place for years in Adelaide, Australia. It's a great example of how ATFA has been encouraging players in Adelaide, and now one is making the pilgrimmage to the FISTF AGP25, while they staged their first WASPA in 10 years!

Final table:
1. Stephen Wilson (12 points)
2. Mick Phillips (4 points)
3. Richard Gwynne (1 points)

Daniele Lombardi wins Hipfingerz tournament in Sydney

Congratulations to Daniele Lombardi for taking the Tuesday night Hipfingerz WASPA session, unbeaten but had some tough matches. Adrian Grunbach took second place on goal difference from Franck Cozzarin.

Great to see all four Sydney clubs represented.

It came down to the last round of the Swiss to determine second place, where virtually anyone could have snapped it up. But Adrian G's win took him home.

In Ireland, the Tralee club held their latest tournament on January 20. 8 players from 2 different clubs (Tralee and Cork) were taking part and after the 5 sessions of the Swiss system, William Magnier was the big winner. It was also James Murphy's first tournament so we are glad to see another beginner from Ireland.

"Very well done to William who took first place in the Monday night WASPA in Tralee. An excellent turnout of 8 players and with 4 missing through illness the numbers are improving. A closely fought contest with the Cork man just shading it. Keep a close eye on our new recruit James. One point behind in his second outing. Undoubtedly one to watch for the future", commented David Elton.

Final standings:

1. William Magnier (Cork)
2. David Elton (Tralee)
3. Cian Hogan (Tralee)
4. James Murphy (Tralee)
5. Jeff Murphy (Cork)
6. Silvia Martin Simal (Spain/Tralee)
7. Barry Higgins (Cork)
8. Sean O'Connell (Tralee)
