WASPA records as per May 2023

Dear Subbuteo friends,

we are very happy to publish the WASPA records after the 44 tournaments held last month.

Excel file (rankings and statistics)

PDF file (results)

Great success for the Wageningen tournament in the Netherlands

We had indeed 33 regional tournaments, 5 promotional events and 6 tournaments played with the old rules.

Tournaments have been held in Australia, England, Belgium, Italy, Wales, Ireland, South Africa, Australia and the Netherlands.

We noticed some tournaments had a very good turnout, which is a sign WASPA events are becoming more important. For instance there were 16 players in Pedmore, 32 in Haverhill, 24 in Wageningen, 40 in Andover, 20 in Walkinston... so once again, congratulations to those who make things possible!

Ruby Matthews beat all the boys to claim the latest London Road tournament

We also noticed some players take things very seriously. 2 players managed to attend 9 WASPA events in May (!!!), which is incredible. it's great to see their motivation to visit different clubs and to players with different sets of rules.

Nice venue for the Andover tournament

A special word for the Hipfingerz club in Australia as they have a new venue and their inaugural tournament was a success with 9 players taking part.

Congratulations to Brian Daley for winning his 100th WASPA tournament a few weeks ago ;-) That's a great achievement!

I also want to point out the fact some clubs have already organized many tournaments this season and can in no case have more than 12 regional tournaments till the end of the season (August 31).

Finally I also want to say I'm very upset that even if some nations really support the WASPA circuit, some national associations still work against the good of the game. A few days ago I was told a national association was creating a national ranking including all types of events incuding small friendly tournaments but organizers would not have their results counted if the tournament has the WASPA status. This is really a shame and is definately a step in the wrong direction :(

If you see missing results, don't hesitate to contact us. This will be corrected next month!

Kent Invicta TFC have a new venue in Gillingham
How to send results?

This is a question I often receive and the easiest way to send results is to keep individual scores of all games (group stages, knock-out games) + a list of players taking part (first name, name, club, country, birthdate also if there are new juniors). Once we have that, it's usually easier to keep records.

Once again, I insist on the fact clubs should not hesitate to run tournaments under the WASPA banner. It's a great way to promote your club, to attract new players and to create local or regional development and we all agree this is what the game needs nowadays.

All your ideas to make the WASPA circuit more attractive are more than welcome. Don't hesitate to send your feedback. We also hope to see more and more clubs running events under the WASPA banner in the future.

We also take to opportunity to thank our partners:

- SubKits at https://www.facebook.com/subkits

- Flicks for Kicks at http://shop.flickforkicks.com/

- MAD ABOUT GAMES at http://subbuteo2012.co.uk

Well, that's all for now. Please remember you only need 3 players to register your tournament. Don't be scared to join. It's free and tournament requests can be sent by e-mail to vincentcoppenolle@gmail.com

Keep an eye on the WASPA blog at http://waspa-circuit.blogspot.com as there are updates almost every day.

Please invite your friends to join our Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/waspasubbuteo/

We also have a WASPA page here: https://www.facebook.com/WASPA-World-Amateur-Subbuteo-Players-Association-231789816834700/

Keep in mind WASPA is also looking for new partners. If you know any company ready to support us (we don’t ask for money but we want some win-win agreements so that we can promote each other), don't hesitate to contact me at vincentcoppenolle@gmail.com

Thanks for reading and have a great day!

A Subbuteo table football project in Mongolia

We are very pleased to hear of our Maltese friend Clarence Psaila who is not only a Subbuteo enthusiast but also a famous chess player. Clarence will be traveling to Mongolia in a couple of weeks, leaving Malta on June 30 and will stay with his wife in Mongolia for 2,5 months. Clarence has already bought teams and balls and will bring an Astropitch, 2 goals and 2 keepers in order to start something in a famous chess club in Mongolia. The club is open daily from 10am till 6pm so the goal is to have 3 hours of Subbuteo a day for new players. Local chess organizers encourage their members to have a secondary hobby as chess is very mentally challenging. Many select table tennis and the club has its own table. Some others chose billiards, etc. "I proposed for them to choose Subbuteo, I introduced it and explained that I can help them set up a club. They were delighted! This club is in the Gobi desert (not in the capital of Mongolia) in a town with around 20,000 people and it is a popular touristic destination for Mongolians. So basically, the Subbuteo table (of hopefully tables) will be set up inside this chess club, and chess players from this club will play after their chess training. Outsiders will also be invited to join the Subbuteo club / activity. During my 3 month stay in Mongolia I will be at this club for most of the time, I will teach them how to play and get them started", explains Clarence.

The idea is to teach the game to some of the chess players for a couple of weeks and then organize a tournament with the local players. of course the goal is to hand things over to a Mongolian delegate when Clarence leaves so that we keep things going in the future!

As it would be much easier to have 2 tables, Clarence would be glad to hear of anyone who could donate one spare pitch, 2 more goals or goalkeepers. Extra material would be more than welcome!

Anyone interested to help this project can e-mail Clarence at clarence_247@yahoo.co.uk

We wish Clarence good luck with this fantastic project!
