Latest WASPA results from Greece

Big success for the Octoberfest tournament

October was a month to remember for Greek Subbuteo. In Kallithea, 16 players competed in the traditional "Octoberfest WASPA tournament" in two categories, modern and old. German teams were used, beers and sausage in the catering section, and as always great fun and super games for the Subbuteo Flaming Flickers.

In the modern rules event, Mike Tastsoglou defeated Vassilis Dragossis in the final while Ioannis Stergiopoulos and Makis Kazatzoglou were the losing semi-finalists.

The old Subbuteo event was won by Nikos Probonas who was playing his very first WASPA event. The Noctuas player defeated Vaggelis Scotiniotis by a single goal in the final. Vasilis Tsakalakis and Antonis Krysilas made it the semis.

Later in the months, the Kallithea Flames held their "Copa Libertadores" with 16 players competing with original Subbuteo teams. Vaggelis Giantais (Ibis, Brazil) defeated Mike Tastsoglou to claim the title while Vaggelis Scotiniotis and Vasilis Tsakalakis made it to the final 4.

Earlier in the month, the club of Achaioi TSC had a tournament with FISTF rules. Panagiotis Sotiropoulos finished on top of a group of 5 while Dimitris Sotiropoulos was runner-up. Nikos Vasilopoulos was 3rd, Georgios Verganelakis 4th and Manolis Sotiropoulos 5th.

Manolis Sotiropoulos had more luck a few days later, winning the club's first old rules event while Dimitris Sotiropoulos was runner-up.

Adrian Connolly wins Northern Falcons WASPA event

Well done to ATFA President Adrian Connolly who took the Northern Falcons October WASPA on goal difference from Steve Dettre on Tuesday night.

A small but tough field contested a round robin, with Franck performing well and scoring his first goal against clubmate Adrian Elmer, and pushing Steve all the way before losing 2-1.

Adrian Connolly's 3-0 win over Tony was the difference on the night, pipping Steve by a goal.

Great to have some flicking post-World Cup, and once again great to meet early and have a few drinks and dinner at the wonderful Willows bistro!

WASPA rankings of September 2022

Dear Subbuteo friends,

you will find the updated WASPA rankings and results in the attached files.
Please note this is the first file for the new season so we start the Season ranking from scratch!
Also juniors are now players born in 2006 or later!

Players in Hannover, Germany

September was a great month with 34 tournaments (28 regional, 3 old rules, 1 advanced rules, 2 promotional events) held in 9 different countries. Special thanks to England for holding the amazing number of 16 different tournaments under WASPA banner!

Singapore league games held under WASPA banner

South African and Malawian players in Johannesburg

Players in Antwerp, Flanders, Belgium

Action in Haverhill, England

Luca Zambello, a prestigous winner in Borgo Vercelli

Amazing turnout in Birsfelden, Switzerland

Western Sydney tournament (Australia)

There is a surprising leader for the Individual Season ranking as Edin Mulasmajic from Germany is our number 1 after winning the Hannover tournament and reaching the final of the Hoogezand tournament in the Netherlands.

The rankings of clubs are also very different with teams in the updated lists of "top clubs" and "development league". Fortunately we still have 9 clubs in the "juniors" but we really hope to have more this season.

Don't hesitate to run tournaments under the WASPA banner. It's a great way to promote your club, to attract new players and to create local or regional development and we all agree this is what the game needs nowadays.

All your ideas to make the WASPA circuit more attractive are more than welcome. Don't hesitate to send your feedback. We also hope to see more and more clubs running events under the WASPA banner in the future.

We also take to opportunity to thank our partners:

Belgium: results from the Flanders and Templeuve

As the new WASPA season starts, Belgium was one of the active nations in the circuit with three tournaments held in September.

SC Flanders players had a blast in Antwerp

The SC Flanders players had their first event of the season in September 5. Six players competed in Swiss system and Jos Ceulemans took the honors to claim another title while the surprising result of the evening was Johan Lourdon's win over Dave Wouters. The final table was as follows (all SC Flanders players):

1. Jos Ceulemans
2. Geert Leys
3. David Wouters
4. Johan Lourdon
5. Gary Moore
6. Dirk Sercu

Didier Moons (left) vs Sébastien Sorge

In Templeuve, two events were held under WASPA banner. The "promotional event" on September 23 had five players taking part but only three of them were eligible to play (the other two were too high in the WASPA ranking) so Didier Moons took the honors after winning all his games. Sébastien Sorge was runner-up and Jocelyn Celton was third.

Some of the players in Templeuve

On September 30, 9 players attended the club regional tournament. This time the event was held in Swiss system. Matthias Averlant could not play the four sessions due to other commitments at his football club so Vincent Coppenolle won the event on goal-difference after defeating Michaël Dupret in the last session of the evening.

Winner V. Coppenolle and runner-up M. Dupret

The final table of the night was as follows:

1. Vincent Coppenolle (Templeuve)
2. Michaël Dupret (MT Tournai)
3 (tied). Stéphane Lambert (Yokohama)
3 (tied). Pascal Flémal (BX Subbuteo Club)
5. André Flémal (BX Subbuteo Club)
6. Didier Moons (Templeuve)
7. Matthias Averlant (AS Hennuyer)
8. Sébastien Sorge (Templeuve)
9. Eric Caillaux (Templeuve)

New season starts in Johannesburg

Johannesburg TFC and Easterns TFC held their first WASPA events of the new season in the last few days. We are pleased to receive results from the different local organizers?

Friendship Cup shared in opening thriller (report by Clifford Graaff)

The Johannesburg Table Football Club aka 'Joburg Eagles' hosted their first in the series of 'Eagles Nite Series' Events on Wednesday the 28th of September in their new lavish and upmarket home venue of the Randburg Astro Hockey Club. The first series event was aptly named the 'Friendship Cup'.

This is a new and exciting iniative by the Joburg Eagles in hosting 9 Nite Series Events during the season whereby points will be will be awarded to each participant for each event based on their finishing position. Overall Series Trophies and medals will be handed out at the end of the 'Eagles Nite Series' in August 2023.

The full list of Nite Series Events will be finalized and published on the Joburg Eagles facebook page shortly.

Once again 'Just for You Meals' sponsored delicious toasted curry chicken sandwiches which were duly consumed by everyone.

A very good field of 8 players, including two newbies of Malawian nationality, flicked off the new season.

Quite a few spectators were drawn in watching some of the games and this proved to be a good marketing event to attract new players.

The 8 players were drawn into two groups of four, with perennial favourites, Sean Morgan and Clifford Graaff, topping their respective groups and qualifying for the first series event final.

Subbuteo stalwarts and lifelong friends Johan 'Nivvy' and Chris once again took part after a fairly long absence away from the beautiful game. ETS Subbuteo Club were represented by Carl Bolweg. Three Malawian nationals completed the field and the two newbies had a great time in their maiden tournament.

Carl and Nivvy were runner-ups in their group and produced an exciting 3rd Place Final by rolling back the years and defeating Carl with a great goal just before full-time.

Paul Seemu, who was introduced to Subbuteo during lockdown, showed some good form to upset Chris and claim 5th Place.

Sammy and Innocent, both newbies, played off for 7th Place with Sammy sneaking in an early goal, much to his delight, and claim 7th Place.

Perennial adversaries and more importantly, friends since school, contested yet another Final. After a goalless final, the match went into extra time. A tightly contested extra period could not provide a winner, and true to the nature of the event name, both players decided to share the trophy in a magnanimous display of comaraderie synonomous with tournaments held in South Africa. The local ethos of enjoyment over winning once again proving to be the winner at the end of the day.

The following Eagles Nite Series event, namely the 'Astro Special' will take place on the 26 or 27th of October (dependent on the local loadshedding schedule.

See you under lites at the Randburg Astro Pitch!!!!!!

Ian Clarke wins Easterns tournament

Also in Johannesburg, the Easterns club held a small event on September 24. Three players were presents and a small league was held in home and away games. Ian Clarke took the honors with 4 wins while Gary Downs was runner-up and Craig Smith was third.
