A good turn out at Kebun Bahru Community Centre witnessed 8 players flicking it out for the league pole position. Players were randomly placed in two groups where after several tensed games including several shoot outs, Anas & Rudy progressed to the finals. Anas eventually came out tops after beating the latter 1-0 hence crowned August winner.

Western Flickers 37th WASPA - Club Championship

With the table football season drawing to a close, Western Flickers TFC held its annual club championships at Williamstown Soccer Club.

The Open and Junior champions would enjoy the honour of having their names etched onto the perennial trophies.

With father and son duo - Benny and Benjamin - winning both previous editions, can anyone stop them from making it a hat-trick of club championships?

Despite the round robin format, the last match of both the Open and Junior categories somehow turned out to winner-takes-all finale!

In the Open category, Benny managed to defeat an in-form Anthony Madiona 3-0 - though it had to be said that the score did not reflect the relative eveness of the game.

It was a lot closer in the Junior event, with Benjamin and Aidan going into the final match even on points and goal difference. Benjamin won out in the end 2-0.

So congrats to our 3-time club champions - Benny and Benjamin Ng !

Special mention goes out to both Anthony and Aidan whose games have improved tremendously this past season. Well done !

Thanks to all who attended. It was a fun night for all and Subbuteo table football was the real winner.

Mark Farrell winner in Bagworth

This week-end the last stage of the White Star circuit took place in Bagworth, Leics. 8 players were taking part and the tournament consisted in a group of 8 so that everyone had 7 games. Mark Farrell took the honors after being unbeaten while organizer Jeremy Bradley was runner-up. The final standings were as follows:

A surprising but worthy winner in Bonaero Park

Saturday 17 August 2019, Kempton Park, South Africa
Pretoria Flickers Club returned to the home of "The Cougars" (Bonaero Villa) for the staging of the 2nd leg of this season's League campaign.
What then unfolded was a day of shocks as the event yielded a surprising but worthy victor.
In Round 1, Julian vd Merwe scored with just 20 seconds left to earn a 1-1 draw against League 1 winner Bevin Reed. In other Round 1 action, Kegan vd Merwe recorded a 1-0 win over Conway Julie to tie Jayden vd Merwe at the top after Jayden had earlier beat host Gary Downs by 1-0.
Round 2 saw the first shock as Julian handed Jayden his first loss on the day, a famous 1-0 victory for Julian! Kegan then pulled off another surprise by beating Bevin by 1-0 for Kegan to go top! Kegan would actually go on to complete "the double" over Bevin in Match 20 - another 1-0 victory for Kegan!
At the lunch break, both Bevin & Jayden conceded that "this was not their day". After the lunch break it was actually Kegan & Julian setting the pace, with Jayden constantly trying to catch up. Round 4 saw Kegan maintain top spot over Julian as these two played out to a 0-0 draw, after much domination by Kegan.
In the return leg between Julian & Kegan (Match 27), it was Julian who scored with a "mid range" shot to stun Kegan by 1-0, effectively ending Kegan's challenge!
In Match 29, Julian secured the title in style - scoring a massive long range shot to beat Conway by 1-0!
In the end, no excuses from anybody as Julian put on a good display - sound defence and good attack play ensured an unbeaten run as Julian "rolled back the years" to capture his 4th WASPA title to date!

Individual acknowledgements on the day :
"Goal Blitz" : Julian vd Merwe ended the day as the top scorer
"Comeback Kid" : Despite two losses, Jayden vd Merwe clawed his way back to 2nd overall
"Player of the Day" : Kegan vd Merwe's 3rd place overall was a bit unjust, as he played well to set the pace all day
"Moment of the Day" : A long range strike from Gary Downs in Match 16 to beat Jayden by 1-0

A big thanks to the Downs household for hosting us, putting up with our "noisy" antics and the serving of wonderful lunch on the day!

Adrian Grunbach and Steve Dettre winners in Sydney

There was WASPA action this week in Sydney, Australia as the Northern Falcons and the Western Sydney club held their monthly tournaments.

Adrian Grunbach claimed his first WASPA when he went unbeaten to claim the August Northern Falcons event.
A smaller than normal turnout didn't deter Adrian, who beat Steve 2-0, Torben 1-0 before clinching the night with a 2-1 win against Tony.
Torben came away with second place because of a better goal difference.
The night also featured two newcomers, in Paolo Credentino and Steve James.
In their Group B with Neil Brener, Steve came out on top courtesy of his 1-0 win against Paolo, while the other two matches were draws.

An enthusiastic collection of players made lots of noise to add to the buzz at Good Games Bella Vista. A few players that haven't featured in competitive play for a long time made their way back into the fold to warm up for upcoming spring league.

Visiting Falcon, Steve Dettre, started out with a sprightly 3-0 victory over Ben Gilbert on the sticky Subbuteo pitch, while Imojjen Elmer and Othniel Antwi played out a highly entertaining 0-0 draw, with both goalkeepers forced into some great saves. Costa Kamarados and Adrian Elmer doubled up their fixture as a Sydney Cup game. Costa rued a double shot of slow beginnings, conceding goals in the opening 30 seconds of each half. Imojjen was able to edge past Ben as they both came to terms with the slow pitch while, in the pick of the round's games, Othniel defended stoutly and then scored a magic shot-on-the-run-from-a-corner goal to earn a point against Steve. In the next round, Adrian cruied past an always improving Ben, Imojjen was no match for Steve, while Costa and Othniel went tit-for-tat attacking each other, with both goalkeepers emerging as figures of the match. In the final round of games, Steve was determined to get his revenge on Adrian on the slow pitch, having lost the fixture in last month's tournament but, in the end, both cancelled each other out with a scoreless draw. In fact, goals proved impossible to find anywhere as Costa and Imojjen, and Ben and Othniel were unable to trouble the back of the net in their final fixtures.

As with last month, a slightly lopsided fixture count meant that the Power Ranking ™ system was used to separate the players and a late night message from Richard Wilson in Kiama affirmed Steve as the evening's winner.

Players in Wrexham

The Wrexham Subbuteo Club WASPA tournament took place on August 18. Wrexham players Iestyn Bevan, Tyler Bevan, Callum Parry and Michael Harper were joined by London Road players Cayne Matthews, Ruby Matthews, Brian Daley and Lucasz Whittle. After the group stage and the semi-finals, Cayne Matthews managed to beat Brian Daley on shots for the very first time. Ruby Matthews and Lucasz Whittle were the semi-finalists while Michael Harper won the consolation tournament.

In Austria, the Royal 78 club in Vienna organized their yearly club championship under WASPA banner.

One month after Heinz Eder's victory, Alexander Haas (see picture) took the honors this time af defeating Stefan Sandner in the final (3-3 and shots). Congratulations Alex!

In Australia, the Perth players had their monthly gathering this week-end and Ross McNulty finished on top of a group of 5. It was great to see Ross back in action. The Perth club will continue hosting more WASPA tournaments next season.

In Brisbane, six players met for the monthly tournament of Brisbane Subbuteo Club. For this tournament they played "The Wigan system", with a slight alteration in that you played everyone with the results counting to the individual and team cups but results against your own team mates didn't count towards the team cup.

The theme was Bundesliga and in the final, Giuseppe Tardiota defeated Gus Gillespie (1-0). The team cup was won by Team A by 13 pts to 10. "The next tournament will be played the same way but the final standings will decide the teams for next time and each team will be a different national league, eg team A is the Italian league and team B is the Spanish league", explained Gareth Whalley.

Finally, some news from Hungary where the Budapest club had the visit of an Italian Subbuteo player, Angelo Micoli (Subbuteo Club Valdarno). Angelo was in Hungary with his family and played games two times. A small WASPA event was organized on August 11 where three players played each other three times. It was a small event but it was great fun, according to the players. Gábor Baross was the winner of the day with Áron Mácsik being runner-up and Michele Micoli as third.

Jean Grosdent wins in Bande

Last week the club of Wamme had a first Summer tournament as a way to prepare for the new season.

The tournament had a good turnout of 12 and all games were played in Swiss system. Jean Grosdent was the winner of the evening after winning his four games.

Raphaël Maillard and Michaël Roberty ended the day with 9 points.

Congratulations to Jean for his victory, even if the club is no very worried about Michaël Roberty's health. Michaël was involved in a terrible story in Rochefort two days after the tournament and he's struggling for life.

All our prayers go to Michaël and his family in these difficult days.

Kenny Beggs wins Ryan McBride Memorial Cup

Derry city TFC held the 2nd Ryan McBride Memorial Cup. It was played with old bases and to the old rules but that didn’t hold back the Legend, Kenny Beggs. Kenny topped his group and then for the second time in the tournament he faced off against Barry Spence, again coming away the victor to be crowned the Ryan McBride Champion. Mark McCrossan and Lawrence Watson made it to the semi-finals while Brendan Rodgers won the Plate tournament.

Anas Rahamat wins 2019 National Day tournament

In celebration of our nation’s 54th birthday, Singapore Lions TFC organized the National Day Tournament WASPA at the Singapore Sports Hub Library on 9 Aug 2019. 

A total of 5 players participated in a round-robin format with each player getting 4 games.
Anas emerged victorious with a 100% winning record in all his 4 games.  Michael was Runner-Up while Bernard ended up in Third place.

Fabrizio Coco wins Sydney TFC tournament

Another WASPA tournament was played in the Sydney TFC new venue this week. 9 players competed in 3 groups. Well done everybody to have made this happen especially to Arjuna Hanafi who made the trip from Melbourne and Leonardo Nizzoli who just came back to Sydney from his Queensland experience.

Congratulations to Fabrizio Coco for another win over Eliot Kennedy in a very open final finished 3-2 to Fab after sudden death shots.

Another big turnout in Greece

July was another good month with 27 regional tournament and 1 tournament with old rules. Australia was very active once again with 7 tournaments held in many different areas while there was less activity than usual in some other nations and the heat wave in Europe can explain it. By and large we have had tournaments in Europe, Oceania, Asia, North America and Africa so we remain a global circuit.

You will not see many changes in the rankings but the highlight of the month is Brian Daley being now on top of the season ranking. Congratulations but there is one month left to go to decide who will be the season winner.

If some juniors (born in 2002 or later) don't appear in the ranking, it means we don't have their birthdates so please send your feedback.

Kye top in Orlando!

Garage Soccer hosted a nice tournament in Florida last Sunday at the An-Tobar Pub in Orlando.
Pat O’Brien & Chris Harris from Garage Soccer (USA) were joined by Kye & Terry Arnold from Kent Invicta (England) as everyone played each other twice in a mini league.

It was Kye who took the top spot after winning all 6 games whilst Terry clinched 2nd spot with a convincing last round win over Pat who himself finished 3rd. Chris was 4th as a great afternoon’s play came to an end.

It was a good chance to share ideas and thoughts on the game to help the Garage Soccer guys in the US.

More trophies for Apatzis and Mesonisanakis in Greece

Three regional tournaments have been held in July in Greece.

Stavros Mesonisanakis was the surprising winner of the Roligans tournament, finishing on top of a group robin with Dimitrios Rebis taking the second place. Thanks to organizer Christos Kotrotsos for the great job!

The club of Kallithe Flame had a great event with 16 players involved. The theme of the tournament was the "AfCon cup" and Alekos Apatzis defeated Christian Tsakalakis in the final to claim the trophy. Yannis Bougiouris and Nikos Jr Psomiadis made it to the semi-finals.

Finally, the Flaming Flickers also held a tournament with a good field of 18 players. The first round of the "Gold Cup" consisted in two groups of four and two groups of five players and in the knock-out games, there were many close games. Rising star Giorgos Karavas defeated Kostas Seses in the semi-final while Alekos Apatzis won the other semi against Yannis Bougiouris but Apatzis later beat Karavas in the final to claim the honors!

Elliot Bellefontaine winner in Liverpool

Last Saturday the Liverpool club had a great day organising a first big event with 13 players taking part. After five games in Swiss ladder, Elliot Bellefontaine ended as winner, being the only player to win all his games. It was good to see Phil Redman back in action and Phil finished the day as runner-up. Thanks to brian Daley for a well-organized tournament!

The 100th WASPA title for Geoffrey Marain

Two tournaments have been held in July in Belgium. The Templeuve United players met in the beginning of the month to celebrate another visit of Romania's Cezar Stoilescu and to say welcome to Renald Deloose who was coming back to the game after a long break.

Vincent Coppenolle won the tournament with 4 with while Matthias Averlant was runner-up.

Alekos Apatzis wins old rules tournament

The Kallithea Flame club in Greece recently held a tournament played with the old rules. 16 players were taking part and the theme of the tournament was the Intertoto Cup. Alekos Apatzis defeated Panos Pangiotides in the final while Nikos Psomiadis and Christian Tsakalakis were the semi-finalists. Congratulations to the winner and thanks to the organizers!
