Players in Belfast |
Sporting Club hosted its second WASPA competition on the road, this time at the wonderful home of Crusaders Football Club, current football league champions of Northern Ireland. Eight competitors travelled from across the north including two returning players; Ernie Bickerstaff formerly a Belfast Barbarians stalwart and Jackie O’Neill a veteran who’s not flicked in anger since the 80’s. The debutants were joined by All Ireland runner-up Kenny Beggs, current WASPA Irish #1 Derry City TFC’s Martin og Bradley, Barry Spence, Simon Stewart, Lochlin Bradley and Craig Stewart who brilliantly organised the evenings event.
The players were split into two teams of four who played each other over four rounds of matches. The Barbarian Select team took the honours 2-2, 3-0, 3-1, 2-2 over the four rounds. Individual results were then tallied into a table where the top half played off for the title with the bottom four shooting it out in the Plate.
In the Plate Ernie Bickerstaff defeated Jackie O’Neill 2-0 while siblings Martin og and Lochlin Bradley continued Irelands longest running Subbuteo rivalry with Martin og running out 4-1 winner. The plate final saw Martin og Bradley avenge his earlier defeat at the hands of Ernie reversing the 1-0 score line to finish the tournament 5th. Ernie in his first competition back showed some neat play and was unlucky not to return home with some silverware.
In the main competition Kenny Beggs went head-to-head with Simon Stewart in the first semi-final running out 2-0 winner, while Craig Stewart went down 2-0 to Barry Spence. Barry and Kenny have locked horns on many occasions over the years given their longevity in the Irish game and it was Kenny who came out on top winning 1-0 on shots after a scoreless game.
A huge thanks again to Craig Stewart for organising the competition and to Crusaders FC for hosting us. Table Football will be coming home on the 18-11-18 with Sporting Club hosting the second round of the Ulster Championship.
