May 25: results from around the world

We are happy to see many WASPA events played in many different countries. We have struggled to get stories about different tournaments but we publish here a summary of events held around the world. Thanks to our friends in Australia, Belgium, Greece, Wales, New Zealand, Romania and Germany. We hope to see many more tournaments in many more countries.

Melbourne (TFC), Australia, April 26 2025

On Saturday, Melbourne Table Football Club celebrated a major milestone — 12 years since its founding — with a special WASPA tournament held at our home venue of East Ivanhoe Bowls Club. It was a fantastic day of matches, showcasing the growth, talent, and spirit that has characterised Melbourne TFC since its beginnings.

The competition in was incredibly tight, with players battling for every point. After a tense and hard-fought group stage, the standings were extremely close, reflecting the high level of competition and determination among all participants. Every match was meaningful, and several players were separated by just a single result.

A special mention goes to Nathan Heard, representing Northern Phoenix, who delivered an outstanding performance throughout the day. Nathan continues to show rapid improvement in his game, and his efforts were rewarded with a spot in the semi-finals — a fantastic achievement and a sign of great things to come.

In the knockout stages, I was lucky to get on a roll and defeat Adrian Connolly 2–0 in the semi-final and Christos Garagounis 3-0 in the final to claim the tournament title.

Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make this 12th anniversary event a success. Here's to many more years of Melbourne TFC and the ongoing growth of table football in Australia!

The Lower Saxony Open 2024 in Hannover

On November 23rd, 10 Subbuteo friends met to play the Lower Saxony Open in Hannover. In addition to players of the last year event, Klaus Fritz (from Laatzen) and Jens Röttjer (from Lüneburg) made their debut.

The "draw fairy" actually managed to place all the "Underdogs" in Group A. Noah, Luc, Klaus and Carsten made it to the next round ahead of Linus. In Group B of the "favorites" and "co-favorites", Charis was eliminated by the narrowest of margins.

In the quarterfinals, Michael, Fred, Edin and Jens prevailed against their challengers from Group A. In the semifinals, Edin showed Michael his best with a 4-1 win. Fred was forced into a free kick shootout with Jens, but narrowly won with a 3-2 score.

In the match for 5th place, Luc crowned his very good performance against Noah with a 4-2 Victory. Jens won the 3rd place with 1-0 against Michael, celebrating his great "comeback". In the repetition of last year's final, Fred turned the tables this time and defeated defending champion Edin with a 2-1 score.

Conclusion

In terms of sport, there was a lot that will continue to be talked about in the future. Starting with the incredible group draw, through to impossible goals and exciting games.

The fact that "veteran" Klaus Fritz made his debut and Jens Röttjer made a comeback at the regional level is also one of the many positive aspects of the Lower Saxony Open.

Congratulations to the new Lower Saxony champion Fred. He was perhaps the most consistent and strongest player in this tournament, just ahead of Edin. Linus should also be mentioned positively here. He never gets tired of challenging his opponents again and again.

Special thanks go to SG '94 Hannover members, without whom this year's competition would not have been possible.

Edin Mulasmajic wins the Stjepan Filipović Cup

Back-to-back titles in Hannover for Edin who already secured the Drugova Cup in September.

Not an easy task! Because this time the German record  female champion Victoria Büsing from TVG Kaiserau was among the 9 participants of the Stjepan Filipović Cup.

After 9 long rounds, Edin confidently reached the final - without losing a single game. He scored a total of 19 goals and only conceded 2 goals. Great performance.

It was a hard fight over who would play against Edin in the finals. Carsten Bock from SC Berlin, the Hanoverian Fred Elesbao and German female champion Vicky Büsing all had good chances. In the end, the experience paid off for Vicky. She won against Carsten 2:0, beat Fred 1:0 and secured her place in the final.

The final turned into a great Subbuteo lesson for the public that stayed until the end. Edin and Vicky showed great quality in an open game with many goals. Victory for Edin in a 4:2 score.

Congratulations Edin! And many thanks to Vicky and the other players for their visit to Hanover! We hope you'll come back soon!

A very international tournament in Karlsruhe

Last week-end 12 players from five different countries met at the Serbian Cultural Center in Karlsruhe, Germany. More than the competition itself, it was amazing to see guests from Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland and Serbia meeting around the green pitches. "It was an outstanding friendly tournament under WASPA banner, it was nice to see old but also some new friends, and that is the most beautiful thing, the connection with people from Germany and other countries. This is the Power of Subbuteo, to connect all people from around the World, in our case Europe", commented organizer Milan Knezevic who insisted on the friendly side of the tournament. "We played and have fun the whole day and after tournament we went to dinner all together. Fred Elesbao winner in Sankt Pauli

Three visitors met with three of our “Braun und weiß” regulars for our small monthly competition on Tuesday. Fresh from their World Cup exploits Leon Schneider and Carsten Bock made their debuts in Hamburg from the Berlin Subbuteo Club, with monthly regular Fred Elesbao travelling up from Hannover SG94.

Every player recorded a win on the night in a tightly fought league, although winner Fred did win all 5 of his fixtures to finish 5 points clear of 2nd placed Simon. Berlin SC’s Leon is fast improving and finished 3rd with Andre 2 points above Carsten & Dimitrios who scrapped it out at the bottom. Thanks to our friends who travelled to us on another cold Hamburg night.

Edin Mulasmajic wins the Pokal Drugova in Hannover

Friendship is about commitment, and the "Pokal Drugova" (meaning, "Friendship Cup" in Serbo-Croatian) proved that when 9 players from different parts of the country showed up in the Lower Saxony Capital for a nice Subbuteo evening.

After 5 rounds in a Swiss system there was a nice surprise. The young national player Leon Schneider won against the experienced Simon Stewart and ended up in 3rd place. Leon has proved that he is fit to represent Germany in the World Cup in Rome this month.

The final was played between the Hanoverian Fred Elesbao and the Wuppertaler Edin Mulasmajic which ended up 1-1 with a very funny equaliser from Edin close to the end of the 1st half. After this result, shoot outs were necessary to decide who would bring the trophy home. Edin won in the end with a 2-0 score.

Fred Elesbao wins monthly event in Hamburg

WASPA Sankt Pauli - Tuesday 7th June

Maybe it was the beautiful weather but there was smaller turnout than usual at Subbbuteo Sankt Pauli with just 5 players competing for the monthly prize. Fred topped the table with four wins to add to his WASPA collection, with Simon finishing 2nd after missing 6 weeks due to illness. Marius rolled in third courtesy of two wins over 4th placed Dimitrios and 5th placed Ralf.

We will do it all again next month but please be aware our clubnight is every Tuesday at the Fanladen and we‘d love to see you there!

Sven Schilling wins Sankt Pauli May tournament

Sven Schilling won the May WASPA at Subbuteo Sankt Pauli thanks to 3 wins and a draw as 7 players battled it out for the monthly crown. Monthly regular Fred travelled from Hannover with teammate Luc who was making his debut at the Millerntor, but both struggled after the long drive with Fred finishing 3rd behind the always consistent Marius. Phillip rolled in 4th undefeated with 3 draws and a win and in the bottom three Andre grabbed 5th with 2 draws and Luc pipped Ralf to 6th courtesy of goal difference.

Another great night, and always great to see a new face. We will see you again on Tuesday 7th June for our WASPA or every week for club training.
