Marain, Ceulemans and Midoux winners in Wattrelos

Players at the WASPA event on Friday evening

This week-end was a very special one for the French club of Wattrelos as the guys in the north of France were holding their first big tournament. With 36 players attending the FISTF Satellite on Saturday, the event was a success. Besides the main event, three smaller WASPA events have been ehld during the week-end.
Père, Marain and Rochez on the podium of the Friday tournament

On Friday evening, 15 players §including some players who were not allowed to play the satellite) came in the premises of the French club to play a Swiss system tournament and many good games were played. Geoffrey Marain won his 147th tournament after winning his four games while Lucas Père was runner-up and Sébastien Rochez was third.

Jos Ceulemans and David Sardi de Letto

On Saturday, the 2 consolation tournaments of the Satellite were also played under WASPA banner. 9 players attended the "WASPA Plate" for players ranked third in their group and Jos Ceulemans (SC Flanders) took the honors after beating local player David Sardi de Letto in the final.

Jordan Bonte and Rafaël Midoux

In the "WASPA Shield" for players ranked fourth in their group, Rafaël Midoux (AS Hennuyer) defeated Jordan Bonte (Wattrelos) to win the prize.

Congratulations to Sébastien Sorge and his crew for organising a fantastic week-end with another successful partnership between FISTF and WASPA.

Report by Gary Downs: "On Saturday the 29th of June, ETS held a fund raiser fun day.  A 7-a-side football tournament, stalls, food, raffles and of course a Subbuteo tournament were all there. The tournament was a round robin of 6 players. After a tough opening draw between Easterns team mates, Ian and Gary, their days took a different turn. Ian went unbeaten to take the top spot, while Gary battled and went winless to finish 5th. Chris had his best day in a tournament for a long time, picking up two wins and two draws. He was pipped to second spot by Fernando by just one goal. Johan had a mixed bag to take 4th spot while Carl couldn't repeat his good performance in his last outing, and finished in 6th. All players that played and a few that didn't, contributed to the fund raising with donations, that are going to a worthy cause."

1. Ian Clarke (Easterns)
2. Fernando Rodrigues (ETS)

In the Crammond Derby, Andy Kent and Paul McFadyen played a nail biting affair, with Andy triumphing 1 - 0 . And Lee McMenemy learned the hard way to hold his goalkeeper when getting shots taken against him. All in all, a great night."

Norway: Subbuteo project in Terje Ellefsen's school

Terje Ellefsen is still doing an amazing job in his school with many kids involved in a development program. The "Euro 24 tournament" is not a WASPA event but might open doors for future events. The hard work pays as boys and girls are improving week after week and 16 players have been involved in the event. Half-size pitches and teams have been borrowed to kids so they can continue to practice during the summer and Terje is hoping to have tournaments outside school in the future, possibly involving parents, too. "We have a good wave here", reported Terje Ellefsen who has also been very active posting flyers and posters about the beautiful game in the surroundings with some positive answers from former players who will hopefully be back in action soon.

Great success for the first tournament in the North of France

A few months ago, Sébastien Sorge and David Sardi de Letto started their own club in Wattrelos. This is the only club in the north of France, a region where most of the best players decided years ago to play for foreign clubs. Starting a new club is always a challenge, in particular in a region with no tradition of Subbuteo. Fortunately, the motivation of organizers made miracles happen. Weekly trainings are organized with some new players taking part but also friends from belgian clubs. The club had the first tournament under WASPA banner on thursday and dur to limited space, it was decided to limit to 10 players. For this first "promotional tournament", Wattrelos players had the visit of Romania's Cezar Stoilescu, who was spending a few days in the area, but also some players travelling for other regions and even 2 Belgians.

After groups sessions played in games of 20 minutes and semi-finals, local player David Sardi de Letto faced AS Hennuyer's Jordan Bonte in the final. Bonte was in an amazing great day and won the final! Sébastien Sorge and Franck Santer reached the semis.

In the end it was a great evening for all, every player was given the chance to play at least 5 games. It was also a good way to promote the game in the area!

We are sure more tournaments will be played in the future!

Final table:

1st: Jordan Bonte - AS Hennuyer
Finalist: David Sardi de Letto - ALC Wattrelos-SLM
3rd: Franck Santer - Templeuve United
4th: Sébastien Sorge - ALC Wattrelos-SLM
5th: Cezar Stoilescu - Subbuteo Bucuresti
6th: Eric Caillaux - Templeuve United
7th (tied): Olivier Bodelle - ALC Wattrelos-SLM
7th (tied): Nicolas Voet - ALC Wattrelos-SLM
9th: Thibaut Marville - ALC Wattrelos-SLM
10th: Anthony Meireaux - Templeuve United

April starts with events in France and Italy

We are glad to start the month with news from France and Italy.

France: Hervé Fino winner in Buhl

The "Subbuteo Club Alsace" was holding a second tournament on Saturday with six players taking part. After the group stage, there were several games to decide final positions Hervé Fino defeated Jérôme Deffolin (2-1) in the semi and U20 international Lorenzo Lo Preti on shots to claim the title. Hervé Rakowski was the other semi-finalist while Pierre Troestler won the game for the 5th place against new player Martial Foechterlé. More importantly, all players had a great day and there was a TV coverage on France 3, which is a great proof once again that WASPA tournament can be a way to promote the game in a wider scale!

Italy: French winner in Valponte

The players with winner Liam Lupo on the left

This week-end the club of Valponte was organizing a Junior tournament under WASPA banner. There were 11 kids competing in the tournament and besides four players of the homes clubs and six players of the neighbors of Rebels Genova, there was a special guest from France as Liam Lupo (Le Cannet) made the trip. Lupo was on fire and defeated Lorenzo Fazio (Rebels) in the final (2-0) to claim the trophy. Tobia Vallebone was 3rd and Alessandro Gandin was 4th.

Huge thanks to the Valponte organizers for doing an amazing job with the kids!

Old Subbuteo event in Teramo

The latest tournament in Teramo was divided into two categories (Senior and Junior). Massimiliano Bonomo is sending us a report of the games: "The tournament on March 23rd saw the protagonists of the first and second of the internal ranking of the Club (separated by a handful of points) with a good Esposito, who sees the victory of the tournament blown away only for the goal difference by a not exciting Bonomo, who struggles to find the goal and when time runs out during the match with Maurizio Di Francesco, makes a defensive mistake that Di Francesco himself doesn't let slip, scoring the equalizer. The Tournament of 28 March is another story, which sees a continuous reversal of the standings with Di Francesco and Puglia dominating one and the other in the first round but wasting in reverse matches. Tournament that goes to Bonomo who extends the club ranking on a totally out of competition Esposito.

Separate mention for the Junior tournament which sees the debut and victory of Andrea Santoro, new member of the club. Second Bonomo Niccolò and third position for Di Francesco Mattia."
