WASPA final season rankings and some words about next season

Dear Subbuteo friends, after some busy days, we are very happy to send you the latest WASPA rankings. As you know, these are the final standings for the season 2024-2025.

PDF file with results

Excel file with rankings and statistics

August was another busy month. We added 38 regional tournaments and 4 old rules tournaments in the records. We had events in many different countries and we see that some players and clubs continue to take things seriously to do well in the rankings.

Having a look at the season, we are happy to have seen 412 tournaments held during the last 12 months. These events were played in 25 different countries. Of course England remains the power of the circuit with 173 tournaments, which is much more than Australia (44), Belgium (31) or Italy (29) but the important thing for us remains to see the enthusiasm of players, clubs and organizers from around the world. We had events in 5 continents and we continue to see new clubs emerging, which is helping to create a strong base for the future of the sport.

It's also amazing to see some clubs started from scratch a few years ago, had their first WASPA tournaments and now contribute to the success of the FISTF circuit, which proves WASPA is more than needed to get new resources for the official competitions. We also enjoy the great collaboration between FISTF and WASPA in several countries were consolation tournaments in FISTF events also offer WASPA points, which is the way to go and hopefully more nations and organizers will understand that in the future.

Having a look at the final standings of this season, we can congratulate England’s Ian Aggett for being on top of the open and season individual rankings, which is more than deserved. Congratulations to Connor Gregory for being the number 1 junior player this season. With no surprise England is also on top of the rankings of nations.

We could speak a lot about the different rankings of clubs. We congratulate Pedmore TFC (England) for finishing on top of the “Top clubs” section. Solent is a more than deserved runner-up. The Solent boys dominated the whole season but had to accept the transfers of 2 key players during the season, which costs the final first place. Thanks to the points of their new players, Worthing Fivestar (England) dominate the “Development League”. Worthing scored more points than the  winners of the “Top clubs” section. Congratulations! Milton Keynes TSC is also promoted in the “Top clubs” section. Finally, congratulations to Harrow Hawks TFC (England) for winning the “Conference League” and to the Club Rebels Genova (Italy) for being the best junior club.

Important announcement for next season

One of the only negative points about the circuit is that we have the feeling some players continue to chase for points at any price, which should never be the priority of the WASPA circuit. Our big priority is to open the doors to all players at every event, even if we are aware that sometimes venues are too small or the number of tables is too limited to host more players.

For the new season, the circuit will change a bit and the following tournaments will still be possible to organize:

- regional: open to everybody. The tournament must be announced at least one week in advance. The announcement must be done on Facebook and it will be necessary to tag WASPA!

- club WASPA (new): open to players of the host club (50% of points are awarded). Players from other clubs can of course still take part if they are invited by the organizer.

- promotional: open to players out of the top 50 (50% of points are awarded). Rules are already defined in the handbook.

- tournament with different sets of rules (old rules, advanced, flat,...)

A club can organize every season:

- 12 regional tournaments + a maximum of 12 "other tournaments" (club WASPA, promotional and/or old rules/advanced rules,...).

National cups can only be organized with the agreement of the national organizer or the national association.

We hope that these rules will be accepted by everybody. We remain at your disposal for any question.

Well, that’s all for now. I remain at your disposal for any question regarding the circuit and your ideas to improve things are more than welcome.

In the next few days, we will publish the new handbook and the file with detailed records of the season 2024-2025.

Please keep in mind that if players want to play for a different club next season, a message should be sent to vincentcoppenolle@gmail.com to update the database.

We really hope we will continue to grow and to see growing interest for the WASPA circuit in the forthcoming season.

Best regards,

Vincent Coppenolle, WASPA organizer, vincentcoppenolle@gmail.com

Results file

Rankings

We have had an amazing month with 41 tournaments (35 regional and 5 old rules) added in the records! Events were played in 14 different countries and we are happy to see Denmark becoming the 38th nations in the current records thanks to Rasmus Lund's victory in Hamburg!

We have very regular players but also some new faces and more and more contacts from all over the world!

Rasmus Lund, winner of the recent Sankt Pauli tournament along with Marcus Tilgner (left) and Edin Mulasmajic (right)

We recently managed to connect 2 players in the United Arab Emirates (Dubai and Abu Dhabi) and have good hope to see the first club in the Middle East being part of the circuit soon!

We are also happy to see action in Austria and in Czech republic for the first time this season as local players in Prague had the visit of guests from Ireland and every player was happy to play some WASPA games :-)

No need to say more, just have a look at the results, rankings and statistics.

We are really proud to see 73 different clubs scored points are are rankind in the three "rankings of clubs". We also have 11 clubs ranked in the junior table!

The doors of the WASPA circuit remain open for all players and clubs!

Don't hesitate to contact me at vincentcoppenolle@gmail.com if you see some mistakes in the files or to send missing results!

We are happy to see organizers doing an amazing job and continuing to promote the game. All connections with other bodies (FISTF and national associations) remain possible and we are looking forward to seeing more nations promoting WASPA events!

Have a great week-end!

WASPA rankings and results of May 2025

Dear Subbuteo friends,

PDF file with the results - click here
Excel file with the rankings and statistics - click here

The amazing field of players in the latest tournament in Barcelona

the updated WASPA rankings are now available. May was an amazing month once again with 45 tournaments added in the records! We had tournaments in Australia, Belgium, England, Spain, Greece, Ireland, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Romania and Wales. Numbers are simply fantastic but it also means a lot of work to compile results and to calculate points.

Organizers do a fantastic job to keep things going and that's much appreciated. We have new players every month and we are also happy to see some new organizers.

In the rankings of clubs, we are happy to see several new clubs joining the Conference League: Godiva SC (England), Subbuteo Bucharest (Romania), Virtus Calabria (Italy), Pireaus Lions TSC (Greece).

As for the reste please keep me posted about:

- missing results (if you see missing tournaments in the PDF file);

- missing juniors (young players born in 2008 or later are not in the junior ranking if I don't have their birthdates);

- stories of tournaments: organizers can send me a few lines and pictures of events.

Last month I also asked a few questions about the future of WASPA. To be honest, I was upset by the number of answers but I take it in a positive way as it means people are happy with the way things are run nowadays ;-)

Well, that's all for now, I would really be happy to get some feedback!

Don't forget that the best way to send results is to send an e-mail to vincentcoppenolle@gmail.com

Keep on flicking,

Vincent Coppenolle

WASPA standings of April 2025 and a few questions

Dear friends,

you will find here the latest WASTA rankings. We are always happy to see tournaments played in many different countries and we had 30 events played under the WASPA banner added in the latest records.

WASPA rankings (Excel file)

WASPA results (PDF file)

Some nations are very active and continue to run many tournaments while things seem to be a bit calmer now in other nations. We are glad to have 2 new organizers (in England and Italy) and we are looking forward to seeing more new clubs being part of this fantastic circuit in the future.

While there are four months left till the end of the season, I would love to get your feedback about the following points:

1) Can you check if you see missing results in the PDF file? We might have unregistered results and would appreciate feedback from our different organizers.

2) Can you check if your junior players (born in 2008 or later) are included in the junior ranking? If your junior players are not listed, we just need their birthdates. Thanks in advance for your help.

3) Future of WASPA: should we continue the WASPA circuit? After 14 years, it seems we have reached some of our goals. Our main goal was to get people involved, to continue local development and to offer something for the players who can not go to international events. But in the last 2 years, we have had the feeling many players are only chasing points and don't really care about helping the game to grow. We really need to continue to work to have more new players, more new clubs organising tournaments and more activities to promote Subbuteo table football. Do you think you are ready to help?

4) Blog: it's really hard to keep the blog updated. I would really appreciate it if organizers could send at least one picture of their tournament and a few lines about results and news about the event.

5) More ideas: all ideas to improve the WASPA circuit are welcome so, once again, your opinion is more than appreciated. You can give ideas about tournaments, individual rankings, rankings of clubs, prizes awarded at the end of the season...

6) Relations with FISTF: many organizers run WASPA tournaments as a consolation event at Grand prix, Opens or Satellites. What should we do to convince other organizers to join?

Well, that's all for now, I would really be happy to get some feedback!

Don't forget that the best way to send results is to send an e-mail to vincentcoppenolle@gmail.com

Have a great week,

Vincent Coppenolle

A special Subbuteo workshop in Wil/Switzerland

Even if only at an unofficial event for the time being, Willi Hofmann is fortunately back in the Swiss Subbuteo scene: On 22 March, the former six-time European champion and 1986 World Cup winner Willi Hofmann (SUI) met with two current internationally active FISTF licensed players at the ‘SUBBUTEO Tischfussball TREFF Wil’: Wolfgang Haas (AUT, lives in Switzerland, winner of the 2025 Australian Grand Prix) and Clinton Gähwiler (SUI, lived in South Africa for a long time, and immediately became Swiss champion in 2023 after moving there).

The aim was to share practical and theoretical experiences of playing materials from the past, present and perhaps also of the future. Workshop organiser Martin Wiesmann (SUI): "I am delighted that these three Subbuteo enthusiasts from the most diverse backgrounds and Subbuteo careers were able to try out and discuss the various materials, techniques and tactics with me with curiosity and an open mind".

Willi Hofmann (centre) had not only brought along his ‘Cones’ (curling figures weighing just 0.8 grams), but also milestones relevant to our table football history such as the original 'Newfooty figure' (front right), the ‘Sport figure’ developed by him and, of course, his creation ‘Toccer’. Wolfgang Haas (left), who also used to play with the ‘Sport figure’ and then switched to the ‘C3S’ from Profibase, was able to impart a lot of knowledge about the ‘Turtle Goalies’, developed by his brother Christian. Clinton Gähwiler (right), who played with the ‘Heavy Weight’ figures in the ‘Old Subbuteo’ category at the World Cup 2024, is an expert with them.

Clinton and Wolfgang tested their ‘C3S’ and ‘Heavy Weights’ on two different pitches and with different balls against Willi with his ‘Cones’. The FISTF recently refused to grant homologation for this, in contrast to the authorisation previously granted for the ‘Turtles’. It turned out that the curled ‘Cones’ can certainly compete with the other types of figures - at least in the hands of old master Willi Hofmann. The main reason he gave for developing the ‘Cones’ was that he wanted to extend the range of technical possibilities (curling) compared to the figures commonly used today and to enable experts to play a more challenging game.

It can be assumed that ‘Turtle’, ‘Cones’ and also the great popularity of the ‘Heavy Weight’ at Old-Subbuteo will clearly stimulate discussions about the further development of our sports table football.

Writer: Martin Wiesmann

There is a video here in which you can see the shooting and curling technique of Willi's 'Cones'.

The original version of this text was written in German and is published on www.swiss-subbuteo.ch

Dear Subbuteo friends, it’s time for the season greetings and, as every year, we can have a look in the mirror and see the ups and downs of the WASPA circuit.

2024 was another fantastic year with more than 400 tournaments played under WASPA banner in 23 different countries and on all 5 continents.

The WASPA circuit has helped to develop the game in different emerging nations such as New Zealand or Romania and has also helped to enlarge the base of players in England, South Africa, Australia, Ireland,… or to keep the game alive in some other countries.

The positive comments from many players and clubs motivate me to keep on working for the game and, as someone really told me, “if it’s not broken, don’t fix it”. Therefore, there is no need to make many changes in the near future.

Anyway, I also receive some negative comments from time to time and I think it’s obvious we can work on details. Some of the interesting comments are as follows:

* The rankings are not really about who’s the best player and maybe rankings should have a different system, for instance giving an average of points won by tournament. Honestly, I agree with the comments but it’s just a lot of work to totally change the system and make something much more accurate. After all, rankings are never perfect. Even the FISTF rankings and most national rankings are far from perfect.

* Some nations don’t support WASPA enough. I think it’s really sad to see nations telling their members not to run WASPA tournaments. We have seen how WASPA events have helped the game to grow in different countries and what happened in England, South Africa, Australia,… must be a real source of inspiration for other nations.

* FISTF President Steve Dettre has always been positive about WASPA and has understood that both WASPA and FISTF must help each other. It’s really sad that FISTF recommends to have Plate tournaments played under WASPA banner if not accepted by several countries.

* People often ask me “why is WASPA big in England, Australia or South Africa but absent in Portugal, France or South America?” What should I answer? Some nations don’t really need the WASPA circuit because the domestic circuit is big (for instance in Italy) or because there is no real wish to have tournaments for beginners or for weaker players. We really believe WASPA events remain fantastic for people who don’t have time, money or energy to travel long distances to play “big events”. It’s important to have regular regional events to keep some players motivated.

* Role of the delegates: a few years ago, I tried to have delegates in each country to help to develop the WASPA circuit. We must admit the role of delegate has been a failure because most of the time clubs don’t contact their national delegate before hosting a tournament and because delegates don’t really manage to develop the WASPA circuit in their respective countries. Therefore, in the future we will keep a more central way to work, directly between clubs and WASPA.

* Lack of communication of local organizers: it has been pointed out that many organizers have tournaments without announcing their events in advance. This is unacceptable as WASPA tournaments should be open to all players, not only members of the organizing club.

For the future, we will focus on a few things:

* Organizers who don’t announce their tournament in advance should have reduced ranking points awarded. When this happens, a regional tournament will only be awarded points as in a “promotional tournament” (50% of points). If it happens three times during the same season, no ranking points will be awarded.

* The youth: everybody is aware that the youth is the priority for the future. It is really sad that only a few clubs manage to be involved in the “Junior ranking of clubs” while some elite clubs are not even in the WASPA rankings but manage to send several very young players to the world cup every year. We really need to do something to have more young players involved in WASPA tournament before playing in international events.

* WASPA blog: we hope more organizers will send reports and pictures of their tournaments so that we can publish more good stories.

Before the end of this long message, I would love to give my “personal top 5 highlights” of the year and congratulate a few people who do an amazing job for the sport:

* The English Subbuteo Association for remaining the most active nation in the WASPA circuit, for helping to create new clubs and for running amazing tournaments, including the national league of clubs. Some players in the UK play for different clubs in the FISTF and WASPA circuits but all players continue to respect their clubs (WASPA) and teams (FISTF).

* The club of Rebels Genova in Italy for the amazing job with the kids. This club is a real source of inspiration, and they run regular events under WASPA banner but also continue to travel to big events to gain experience and to become excellent players.

* The group of players in Bucharest, Romania as they are proving that even being a nation with no real history of Subbuteo table football, they can build something really nice. Cezar Stoilescu has done an amazing job to promote the game in Bucharest and managed to have new players interested. The next step of course is to have the club growing and to have more tournaments and competitive games.

* The Northern Line Flickers in New Zealand. The group in Auckland has been amazing in the last few months, started playing in a pub, then organizing some WASPA events, later even hosting the first FISTF tournament in the country and now planning to have a team for the tournaments to come in Australia. That’s exactly how things should be, growing step by step!

* All local organizers who keep the faith in what they are doing, sometimes with a lot of personal satisfaction, sometimes with the frustration of having less players than expected. We need local organizers to build a strong future! The faith of local organizers keeps me motivated to continue to run the WASPA circuit

Well, that’s all for now, that’s for the reading and keep in mind I stay at your disposal if you have any question regarding the WASPA circuit!

Have a fantastic year 2025!

WASPA rankings of November 2024 are out!

Dear Subbuteo friends,

December 5 is the International Volunteer Day.

Thanks to all volunteers who give time and energy for the good of Subbuteo table football.

The Hannover guys held the first tournament in Germany this season

December 5 is also the right time to publish the updated WASPA rankings.

WASPA results (PDF file)

WASPA rankings (Excel file)

A good group of players in Tralee, Ireland

Ian Clarke won the South African championship

Players in Templeuve, Belgium

WASPA test-match between Giorgos Zangylos (Cyrus) and Cezar Stoilescu (Romania)

November has been an amazing month with 35 regional tournaments, a national cup (in South Africa), a tournament played with the old rules and a promotional event. There was also a WASPA test-match played in Cyprus.

In the last few weeks, we have seen a growing interest in the ranking of clubs as this is a good way to prove the good health of the most active clubs. No surprise as English clubs dominate the "Top Clubs" and "Development League" sections but there are also interesting moves in the Conference League as 8 clubs have scored their first points in November for a total of 27 clubs involved now.

Welcome to "Stourbridge Casual SC", the newest club involved in the ranking.

We are also happy to see several organizers having WASPA games during their FISTF week-ends! This is a great way to prove FISTF and WASPA can work together!

Well, no need to say more, enjoy the different files and don't hesitate to send your results, reports and pictures ;-)

Thanks in advance!

The October rankings are out!

Dear Subbtueo friends, the updated standings of the WASPA circuit are now available.

Excel file with rankings and statistics

PDF file with results

Ian Aggett is the new WASPA number 1 player

Pizza break in Sydney during the latest Northern Falcons tournament

We had 37 regional tournaments, 1 National Cup, 1 promotional event and 2 test-matches added in the records last months and WASPA events have been played in Belgium, South Africa, England, Cyprus, Australia, Spain, Greece, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Wales, Italy, the Netherlands, Scotland and Malta.
WASPA test-match in Cyprus between George Zangylos and Mark Weaver

There is a big change on top of the Individual ranking as Ian Aggett (Milton Keynes TSC) is the new number 1. Ian has been very active in the WASPA circuit in the last few month and he managed to win 4 tournaments in October (runner-up in Pedmore, winner in Leicester, Chesterfield, Milton Keynes and Dagenham). It's not surprising to see another player from England dominating the WASPA circuit!

The WASPA circuit was back in Malta thanks to Bormla Subbuteo Club

Ian is also on top of the Season ranking while Solent's Connor Gregory is the number 1 junior player.

We are pleased to see that 54 different clubs have already scored points in the different rankings of clubs.

Great success for the All-Ireland Championship in Dublin

Welcome also to the Greek clubs of Atlas FTC and Evia Subbuteo Club who ran their first WASPA tournaments!

Even if WASPA tournaments were organized in 14 different countries last month, we are looking forward to seeing more nations joining in the near future.

Great turnout for the Barcelona tournament

Please note some clubs might be wrong in the database as we have not been informed about all transfers. If you see mistakes, don't hesitate to contact me.

Best regards,
