Great Subbuteo action in Australia during Summer events

Three WASPA events have recently been held in Australia. Thanks to Adrian and Steve for the great reports!

8th annual Christmas Binge WASPA tournament

The Clubhouse, Toongabbie

WSS hosted its traditional Christmas Binge as 7 players turned up to waddle around the pitches and try to burn off a few Christmas kilojoules. Steve started the evening with complaints about the fixture scheduling system. Adrian started the evening not having a clue what fixture scheduling system was even going to be used. But a full league, with quickfire games, was settled upon, to find the final Australian Subbuteo tournament champion for 2025.

Eliot got off to flyer, beating Franck 2-0 - a result which had significant repurcussions later on in the evening. Franck's evening was a mixed one, with 3 draws, against Adrian, John and Gordon respectively, while he also picked up wins over Steve and Gabriel.

Gordon progressively got better as the evening wore on, with the blip of a 0-2 loss to Steve followed by a tight 0-1 loss to Eliot and a draw with Franck. In spite of only picking up a few points, Gabriel showed his improving skills with goals against Steve and Eliot (the only goal Eliot conceded all evening!) and, most importantly, a crushing 2-0 victory in the final round of the evening - the Phokos Derby. John himself struggled for results, though played well - his 0-0 draw with Franck late in the evening a reward for his efforts.

Adrian went undefeated across the evening without conceding a single goal. Keeping up with Eliot was necessary for a chance to win the evening, and a 0-0 draw in that fixture was a step forward, but a 0-0 draw against Franck where Eliot was able to beat him proved to be the difference. Steve had a mixed bag, with equal losses and wins. He was unfortunate to lose to Adrian in the final round - a tight game was decided by a slow shot from Adrian that somehow dribbled under Steve's 'keeper at the near post.

And so it was, unfortunately, the lone outsider who went away with the title in WSS's last tournament for the year. Congratulations to Eliot, you earned the extra slice of leftover panatone!

Please note Western Sydney will hold their next tournament on January 18.

Two winners for the Northern Falcons tournament

Jonty Brener and Adrian Grunbach shared the January WASPA after finishing the five-round Swiss level on 11 points, and having drawn 0-0 in the first round.

It was an epic night of surprises, close matches and all-round fun - as only a Sydney WASPA can be.

Franck and Eliot jumped to the lead after three rounds, but then things got interesting!

When Eliot went into the lead after 4 rounds it was still all to play for, and then Adrian G beat Eliot and Jonty claimed a share of the title by beating Franck.

The normally dominant Daniel couldn't find his shooting finger, Adrian E suffered from three draws, while Johnny Ball had his best performance in ages.

It was great to see Katelyn in action, showing her defence is improving at every outing.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the coming WSS night and Hipfingerz outing before the Australian Grand Prix.

Finally, Melbourne TFC held their January WASPA on Saturday at East Ivanhoe Bowling Club. Adrian Connolly won his three games to win the league format. Congrats!
