Saturday 20 May 2017, Pretoria, South Africa :

The 2017 edition of the Challenge Cup was played under the theme of "Cup Final Day" where we played out the finals of various domestic & continental cups.
The event attracted a field of 10 entries which included a return to the tables for Conway Julie, who last competed in December 2016 !
The team allocations as follows :
Osvaldo van Niekerk (Chelsea), Jayden vd Merwe (Arsenal),
Marlin Boyd (Barcelona), Bevin Reed (Alaves), Rowin Wilson (Dortmund), Julian vd Merwe (E.Frankfurt), Sherwin Reed (Man Utd), Conway Julie (Ajax), Kegan vd Merwe (Real Madrid), Chessray Jooste (Juventus).
Points allocation as follows : 2 points per win, 1 point a draw. However, for "Cup Finals" the losing finalist earned 1 bonus point if the final was decided on penalty shots !

In Round 1 action, Sherwin Reed upset 2016 defending Challenge Cup winner Kegan vd Merwe by way of a 1-0 win ! In the first final of Round 1, Jayden vd Merwe (Arsenal) kept his calm to beat Osvaldo van Niekerk (Chelsea) by 3-1 on shots. The second final saw Bevin Reed (Alaves) register a 1-0 win over Marlin Boyd (Barcelona). The drama continued in Round 2 as Julian vd Merwe (E.Frankfurt) beat Rowin Wilson (Dortmund) by 4-3 on shots after a marathon shoot out consisting of 18 shots to decide their final !!! In the second final of Round 2, more drama unfolded as Sherwin Reed (Man Utd) beat Conway Julie (Ajax) by 2-1 on shots to emerge as the victor in their final. When Bevin beat Conway by 2-0 in their Round 3 encounter, it was Bevin who topped the standings for the first time on the day by way of GF. In the last "Cup Final" of the day, Chessray Jooste (Juventus) beat Kegan vd Merwe (Real Madrid) by scoring in the last third of the allocated time to register a 1-0 win. The solitary goal for Chessray tied Bevin on points, but Chessray slipped down to 2nd overall by way of GF.
Round 4 - the business end, saw more drama unfold as final placings for the day were still up for grabs ! Marlin ended his day on a high by dispatching of Osvaldo by 1-0. Rowin clinched 6th place overall thanks to a 1-0 victory over Conway. Jayden then scored a fierce, tight angled shot to beat Bevin by 1-0 and thereby affording Chessray a massive lifeline. Chessray duly obliged by inflicting Sherwin's only loss of the day by way of a 2-0 result - the result confirming Chessray as 2017 Challenge Cup Champion!
This triumph marks a 10th WASPA title for Chessray Jooste to date!
In the final match up, Julian vd Merwe clinched 2nd place overall by beating Kegan vd Merwe by 1-0 : not a bad showing by the "old timer" as he joined Chessray as the only other unbeaten player on the day !!!

As always, a big thank you to all who attended to make the day a great success.
