May 18 Northern Falcons WASPA

Seven hardy souls on a balmy Autumn evening at GoodGames Chatswood for the first flick in a while. Dave Sultana of Subbuteo Parramatta was the surprise of the night, recovering from a 5-0 loss to Eliot to claw back a 1-1 draw with Johnny before beating Simon 1-0 to make the semis. Johnny was cursing a brain snap with the spare keeper that gave Dave his goal, but admitted he wasn't "feeling the groove" on the night. In the other group, Steve was building his game with a couple of 1-0 wins, with Harley joining him in the semis courtesy of another 1-0 win, this time over Tony Credentino. In the semis, Eliot won 4-0 against Harley, while Steve got another 1-0 win against Dave, who created a few chances. In the final, it was another epic Kennedy-Dettre battle, with some great shots, great saves, and then the decider coming in sudden death extra time, Eliot finally springing Steve's tight defence for a nicely placed shot, and a 1-0 win.

Brisbane tournament - May 2016

The 15th tournament for BSC saw 8 players competing in a round robin league format. Our regular flickers were joined by 2 new members, both returning to the game after a hiatus of 10 years or so. Shane Robinson and Ian Garred acquitted themselves well considering the time spent out of the game, and with a bit of practice along with brushing up on the newer rules, they will no doubt be contesting the trophy soon.
With 4 tables in play, the games were coming thick and fast, a real baptism of fire for the new guys. Reigning champ Gus Gillespie bagged 2 wins, 1 defeat and 4 draws which placed him 4th overall. Andy Rigden has now found a way to attack without over committing players, keeping things tight at the back, playing well today earned him a 3rd place. Giuseppe had a mixed day by his standards, finishing in 5th place maybe jet lagged from his trip to Italy. Shane, Ian and Rob were in the lower places, but considering 2 were new guys and the other still recovering from an operation, did well to compete and take some valuable points from the others.

The last of the fixtures had Andrew B versus Rik, both had same points tally, both had won 5 and drawn 1 going into the final game, but Andrew’s superior goal difference meant a draw would be enough. Rik took an early lead in the first half, but the game (and trophy) was still in the balance as a goal either way would decide the winner. Halfway through the second half, Rik found the bottom corner to go 2-0 up, and hold on for the victory.

Special thanks again to Giuseppe for supplying a great venue, and hospitality.

BSC welcomes all newcomers to come along and join us, we are happy to assist in training, and supplying equipment to get you started, and we encourage former flickers to return for a bit of fun.
Next tournament is on Sunday 26th June, check Brisbane Subbuteo Club website for details. www.brisbanesubbuteo.org

Pascal Droeven does it again

A small turnout of four players met in Vresse for the latest tournament of SC Semois in the South of Belgium. Pascal Droeven won the group stage (every player played six games) and later won the final against usual rival Renaud Parisel. Both players met in every final since the club made their WASPA debut and Pascal Droeven won for the 5th time in 6 finals. The club will have a larger room and more tables next season with the hope to attract more players for future events.

Melbourne WASPA: May 2016

Adam vs Juan
The tournament only consisted of 4 players, 3 adults and one junior. A round robin format was organised where we all play each once and top two go through for a grand final match. New rising star Juan, managed to secure 2nd place after defeating Adam in a penalty shootout. It panned out in a way where both players finished on equal points and goal difference. Adam played strongly against Luke where he managed to find the back of the net against the president’s iron curtain however Luke came out the victor 2-1. He found himself frustrated against Juan where he had majority of possession and scoring chances, but Juan managed to hold him off and he himself missed two decent opportunities near the end. Aidan Deverell managed to score twice in each fixture against his father and Juan in a losing effort, it was here where Juan notched an extra goal which tied him for second place after both players lost to Luke. Straight after their 0-0 draw, conveniently at the end of the round robin, they both went straight to penalties in which it resulted 2-1 in favour of Juan. The grand final did not provide a great underdog story much like Leicester City, where the experienced Luke Radziminski finished strongly in first place with a 4-0 win.
