Terry Arnold wins in Kent

Kent Invicta TFC held another WASPA night on Friday with a 12 players tournament at Playfootball in Gillingham. Again, lots of fun games were played with Terry Arnold winning in the final session with a victory over Runner-up Dave Collier with Kye Arnold in 3rd. As well as the 12 players there was also a couple of newcomers trying out the game for the first time, which was encouraging.

Eric Threis wins in Verviers

On January 22, 14 players met in Verviers for a WASPA tournament with some excellent players from 4 different clubs. Players were dropped in four groups and there were very close games. Pascal Scheen couldn't pass the first round and later won the games for places 9 to 14. Eric Threis (Stembert) defeated Philippe Roufosse (Verviers) in the final. Two players of JSC Rochefort, Kevin beckers and Michaël Denooz, lost in the semis. Looks like it was a very good event.

A flurry of WASPAs in Australia

Green vs Credentino

Sydney played host to three WASPA events in the lead-up and then during the Australian Grand Prix.
On the Tuesday before the event, we tested out a few of the new boards, with a WASPA featuring local boy Robert Green, back on home shores for the first time in a year, as well as Antonio Carabillo from Hong Kong.
In the semi-finals, Green overcame returnee Tony Credentino, who had played in the first ‘reformation’ event back in 2010, while Fabrizio beat Antonio, before losing to Green in the final.

After the first phase of the AGP16, a straight knock out WASPA was staged, with a few upsets in the first round.
Simon Cole upset Northern Falcons club mate Steve Dettre 2-0, while Matt Barrie of Subbuteo Parramatta beat Benny Ng of Melbourne TFC 2-0. New player Jason Lockard (having played in the 90s), beat Geoff Sirmai on shots, while Adelaide’s Jez Simpson also edged through on shots against Northern Falcons’ Todd Giles.
In the quarter finals, Giuseppe Tardiota of Brisbane hit his straps in a 3-1 win against Matt, while Jez’ shootout luck held as he beat Jason.
In the semis, Giuseppe beat Mike Newton, while Tony Credentino showed he was getting back into form with a 1-0 win against Jez.
In the final, after 1-1 at the end of regulation time, Giuseppe claimed the title on shots, his first WASPA victory at a FISTF event after three previous losing finals!

Carabillo vs Coco

On the Sunday, a few players who were not in a team conducted their own WASPA, with Matt Barrie, Paul Magee, Giuseppe and Tony fighting it out over two rounds of group matches before Matt grabbed a 2-0 win against Paul in the final.
Once again, the WASPA events proved invaluable as warm up competitions, and also to provide players with as many matches as possible over the course of the weekend!!

Michaël Dupret wins the "promo" in Templeuve

The players

This Sunday the first WASPA "promotional event" of the Belgian season was held in Templeuve. With the absence of some local players (Marain, Deloose, Coppenolle), there was a good field of 8 players and a lot of motivation to try to win the event. In the Swiss system, Michaël Dupret showed he has enough experience to finish on top. He was the deserved winner of the day with 4 wins. It was a brilliant moment with 2 players attending their first tournament ever.

Murat Tünger is a king in Vienna

Murat Tünger won the TSC Royal 78 cup this Sunday in Vienna, Austria. Murat defeated Alexander Haas (6-3) in the final. Herbert Gütl and Karl Vranovitz also reached the semis. Congratulations to Murat for his first success this year!

Paolo Talarico wins the Cup in Catanzaro

This saturday the club of Catanzaro (Italy) was playing a tournament with the old rules in their premises. The theme of the tournament was the "Cup winners cup". 8 players were taking part. Paolo Talarico (Everton) won the final against Raffaele Gangale (Chelsea) while Andrea Pagano (Aberdeeen) was third and Vittorio Giummo (Barcellona) was fourth.

Last night, the Templeuve United club in Belgium was holding their 4th tournament of the season with a very good field of 14. Due to the number of entries, it was decided to play in Swiss system, also because some players announced they could not stay till the end. There was a big surprise in the first session when Geoffrey Marain lost to Vincent Coppenolle (3-2). Marain, who is still hoping to catch his 50th WASPA title had therefore to fight to get a final ranking but he didn't have the chance to play Joffray Laurent who was on fire and won his four games in a spectacular way. Laurent wins therefore the tournament with 12 points while Marain and Sébastien Devreese had 9, Alain Flament and Vincent Coppenolle 7.

Cappelli strikes in Pistoia

On Monday, January 25, the 5th round of the WASPA Pistoia Series "Old Rules" has been held with more players than in the previous tournaments. Traditional Subbuteo has a great success in Tuscany and players come from the sorrounding cities.

Mirko Cappelli, one of the best players of "Sombrero San Miniato Subbuteo Club", won a hard tournament with 3 draws, and the final 2-0 vs the orange Stefano Braschi. Massimo Lapucci, still first classified in the local ranking, won the smaller final after shootouts vs Granato (0-0 at regular time). To be noticed the return to subbuteo of Alessandro Lattughini, player from Prato and guest of the orange club.
