20th annual SEPTEMBER CUP The Clubhouse, Toongabbie
Western Sydney Subbuteo traces its roots to the first ever September Cup. First contested in 2003, this year was the 20th edition of Australia's longest continually running Subbuteo tournament. And, by Subbuteo tournament, we mean Subbuteo - all equipment used was be Subbuteo branded - from original flats to 50s & 60s heavyweights, 70s & 80s lightweights, 90s Hasbro, 2010s rubber figures, little plastic goalkeepers, nylon and cloth pitches, even an original 2000s Dream Team stadium!!
This year, the handicap system was set into overdrive, with goalkeeper sizes (those early 2000s photoreal figures are quite big!), access to polish, base types, use of a travelling 'keeper and even goal size used in an attempt to even the field a little more. 8 players were one hand - a couple of Northern Falcons to add to WSS' six representatives. In the end, the final table remained somewhat true to regular expectations though, match by match, things were a lot closer than usual. Every player managed to find the back of the net, every player picked up at least a point, and every player swore at the pitch, their falling figures, their travelling goalkeeper or the Subbuteo gods at least once!
After a four round Swiss system, the highlights of which were Tim giving a relative hammering to Steve (the 2-0 scoreline being the only one of the day with more than 1 goal difference between opponents), John's first competitive goal against Adrian E, the annual Elmer Sister Derby (which opened the afternoon), Franck's perfect run of four straight 1-0 victories, and Adrian G's absolute screamer to win his match in the Adrian Derby, Franck and Adrian G were the top two placed players and so went to the traditional September Cup final.
While Adrian G generally dominated the field position, not many clear cut chances were made by either player, the Dream Team Stadium making sure any sort of flow was kept to a minimum. A 0-0 result ensued, meaning the combatants went straight to shots. With their little plastic goalkeepers (both with their arms down), accurate shots tended to find the back of the net. In the end, Adrian G took the victory, 3-2, the shootout going down to the wire and Franck missing the final shot. Adrian's victory was all the more deserved as he played with some vintage lightweights which hadn't left their boxes since the late '90s, and sporting his original Cherrybrook Bulldogs club shirt from his time across that decade in one of the most legendary clubs in Australian subbuteo history.
And so a brand new name is added to the famous trophy! Congratulations to Adrian G for the win, and to all the players for a great afternoon maintaining, and developing, the traditions of one of the most fun tournaments in existence!
