Monthly report of March 2017

Dear Subbuteo players and fans, here are the updated WASPA rankings and statistics.

Excel file
PDF file (golden book)

You will find in the Excel file the different rankings and the main statistics.

Good turnout for the Melbourne TFC tournament
March 2017 has been a good month as several events have been played under WASPA banner:
- the Swiss cup;
- 24 regional tournaments;
- 1 tournament with the old rules;
- several gathering of the NETFA Brigantes circuit;
- 1 WASPA test-match (between Paul O'Donovan Rossa and myself).

33 players have competed for the very first time in a WASPA tournament.

The first event in Argentina
We are also very pleased to see 2 more nations in the circuit: Welcome Argentina and Slovenia!

2 clubs have run their very first WASPA tournament: thanks to the club of Buenos Aires (Argentina) and Trieste (Italy) for their support.

Australia had another amazing month with 5 tournaments run by 5 different clubs.

The club of Firenze (Italy) had 2 amazing tournaments with 14 and 21 players!

Action in Wales
We are very pleased to see that clubs in Derry (Northern Ireland) and Drury (Wales) manage to boost interest in nations were the level of activity was low in the last few years.

Greece is now the most active nation in the WASPA circuit organizing tournaments with the old rules. Hopefully we will get back interest from italy and possibly from other nations?

16 clubs have joined the "top clubs project" but several clubs (Famagusta TFC, SC Flanders, Attard SC, Harrow Hawks, Brisbane SC, Club Subbuteo Firenze, London Road SC, Pireaus Lions TSC, Derry City TFC, Kebun Baru SC, ...) have made enough efforts to join in the near future. We would be pleased to get them involved.

Champion's league tournament in greece with 32 players
Well, that's all for now. I hope you will love the statistics, results and rankings.

Please remember you only need 3 players to register your tournament. Don't be scared to join. It's free and tournament requests can be sent by e-mail to vincent.cop@rsca.com

A friendly visit in Florida

This Monday Tampa Bay players received the visit of the Augusta Subbuteo Club with Sean and Miko Mann, for the occasion local players organized a very friendly WASPA event called Suncoast Open at its fourth edition. It was a great day of Subbuteo and comradeship hopefully they will have more in the future.

For the competitive point of view Alex Batacchi was the winner, but it was more the joy of playing again than anything else, again thanks to Sean and Miko to make us part of their vacation.

Picture: Miko, Alex and Sean. Isabel batacchi was also taking part.

Jurong Central March 2017 tournament

Jurong WASPA held their 3rd league games of the year with 11 players participating. A good turn out saw a few shocking results notably with Ding Heng winning the plates final 1-0 against Fauzi; as the latter had to pull out of the game after about 2 minutes in the game due to leg cramps 😩. Not to worry, Fauzi recovered soon after drinking a large bottle of 100 plus & a smoothing leg massage by Bolkiah🤓

As for the cup final it was again between TFAS Cup finalist Anas & Rudy. Both players playing with new bases managed to scrap through to the final ...Could a repeat of the recent TFAS final at Sports Hub library occur again? where Anas ran riot & demolished his opponent. Alas, today was not the same eventhought Anas scored early in the game, Rudy manage to claw back with an equaliser & with about a minute to go, Rudy scored the winner making the score Anas 1 Rudy 2, hence Rudy winning Jurong March WASPA.

Rik Bland wins again in Brisbane

Sunday the 26th of March,
Flick Off 9 am.  Woody Pointe club house.

A very, very warm day in SE Qld saw just six brave the heat for some flickin fun. A straight forward league would be played with the top two playing a grand final.
As always seems to be the case, last months finalists had to face each other in the first round, Rik had found Gus's weakness, and with devastating effect. Three dodgy shots trickled in as the expected thunder shot was being saved (the keeper frantically palming away the expected shot whilst actually watching the ball trickle over the line). Rik did manage a real cracker amongst the his four, and Gus got a couple of good goals back but the damage was done. So Rik started the day as he meant to go on, with a comfortable 3 points. Wil and Andrew played out a goalfest, with Andrew winning 8-5.
The second round had all the local rivalries in one go. Wil beating his brother James 3-1 with a couple of pitch invasions to be dealt with. The Sunshine Coast rivalry between Andrew and Gus saw the latter win 3-0. The Brisbane derby saw Rik take all three points from Giuseppe with a close 2-1 win.
The big game of round 3 was a very close and hard fought battle which ended all square, with Andrew and Giuseppe scoring 2 a piece.
Round 4's big game witnessed Gus go into a staggering 3-0 lead against Giuseppe, which Gus maintained till half time. Giuseppe has a great record of comebacks against Gus, and 3-0 didn't seem enough to the Newcastle man. Sure enough, not long into the second half Giuseppe broke and efficiently pulled one back. Gus though dug in, and refused to let the lead slip away. In the end Giuseppe could just not get the goals and the game finished 3-1 to a very relieved Gus, this securing at least 2nd spot.
Round 5 had the Andrew v Rik game, Andrew would really like to beat Rik, and this time he came no where near. Rik routing the Rovers fan 5-0.
So Rik topped the table with a 100% 15 points. Gus runner up with 12 points. Andrew 4th to Giuseppe by goal difference.
The Final, for the 3rd month in a row was played out between Rik and Gus.
Gus had given his goalkeeper a good work out after the round one game and felt almost confident going into the final. Rik seemed to be cruising and was playing very well, and had to be the firm favourite.
After 3 minutes Rik had the lead, which was doubled after 6. Two nil down Gus found an inner strength and fought all the way, hitting the metalwork twice and certainly having the majority of attacks, but Rik's stoic defending saw him win back to back trophies. Another good final, and a worthy winner.
Another great day, some great goals and a fair bit of good banter, not to mention Giuseppe's awesome lunch and hospitality.

Spyros Stratoudakis wins the Champion's League

The Greek club of Flaming Flickers has always creative ideas to promote the game and to organize fantastic tournaments. In recent weeks, the Flaming Flickers held a real Champion's league with a total of 32 teams. The tournament was very special as the group stage was played in home and away games. Some groups were very close to decide the qualified teams for the second round. From the last 16 round to the semi-finals, home and away games decided the winners. In the end, Spyros Stratoudakis won the big final against Vassilis Dragossis by a single goal (1-0). Nikos Psomiadis and Yannis Bougiouris reached the semi-finals. Congratulations to the Flaming Flickers for a great achievement!
