Matthias Averlant wins big WASPA event in Verviers

Matthias Averlant vs Noah Janssens

Last Friday there was a great "training session" in Verviers just before a big week-end of action as the Belgian Interclubs Championships were taking part in the same venue. 16 players from 4 nations (Belgium but also France, Spain and Malta) were taking part in a WASPA tournament played in Swiss system. After the four sessions, two players finished the event with 12 points and Matthias Averlant was decided winner thanks to more goals scored than Daniel Scheen. The highlight of the night was the presence of Subbuteo legend Dominique Demarco. Dominique is a retired player for many years but used to be the "Carlos Flores of the 90's" after some significant wins in major events like the ETF European Cup 1989 in Wallisellen, the FISA World Cup 1994 in Chicago and later the FISTF World Cup 1994 in Paris. For sure it was a big honor for his opponents to meet him in a WASPA tournament

Latest tournament in Brisbane, Australia

On Thursday the Brisbane players held their fourth WASPA tournament of the season with six players competing in a league format. Tomoki from Japan was the special guest of the night but Giuseppe Tardiota was the undefeated winner of the tournament.

We are really happy to see enthusiast players in such an isolated city and regular meetings prove how the local group is working well to promote the game.

If you are also part of an isolated group of Subbuteo players, don't hesitate to join the WASPA circuit!

WASPA complete. A really enjoyable day shared with other enthusiasts. Great thanks to all who travelled to the sunny South West on a very wet day!

Malcolm Jamieson, Stuart Briffett, Tony McCann, Phil Bryant and Andy Jarvis joining five of our regular club members Simon, Oakley, Bob, Bill and Marcus.

Nice for our players to compete against better players and we learned a great deal. Malcolm and Tony shared much of their big game experience and gave some brilliant advice for us to act upon.

Congratulations to Marcus Ellis who lifted the SDS Plate trophy.

Special congratulations to our WASPA trophy winner Bob Fairbrother who defeated Malcom Jamieson 1-0 in the final. Both had been in scintillating form on their respective runs to the final. Bob stayed calm when under intense pressure from Malcolm having taken the lead early in the second half. Was a wonderful game to watch with top quality play on display.

It has been a real privilege watching our club grow. I have met great people and made new friends. The willingness of all to contribute enabled us to host this event today. From learning the new game of Subbuteo to slowly improving our equipment. We have a competitive league and cup format between our players, a website, club jersey and additional subbuteo paraphernalia.

We couldn’t do it without a great venue. The White Hart Modbury, many thanks to Gareth and the gang for being generous host.

If you are thinking of joining or creating a Subbuteo club, do it. You just might have a lot of fun. (report from the Facebook page)

WASPA rankings of October 2025

Dear Subbuteo friends,

it's November already and we are happy to release the WASPA rankings of October.

Excel file with rankings

PDF file with results

Last month was another amazing month with 43 tournaments added in the records including the All-Ireland championhips in Derry, 36 regional tournaments and 6 tournaments played with the old rules. Since the beginning of the season, we have had events held in 15 different countries, which is superb!

Malcolm Jamieson is the new leader of the season ranking and there are changes also on top of the different club rankings. 59 clubs have already scored points in the three different sections but we really hope we can have more then the current 7 clubs ranked in the Junior table as the youth remains a priority for the future of the game.

Special thanks once again to the national associations who support the WASPA circuit. We really appreciate the support from the Asian Confederation after the different events organised besides the Asian Cup in Sydney but also the national events held in Ireland and Switzerland and England with WASPA points for the players taking part.

Your ideas and proposals to improve the WASPA circuit are welcome so don't hesitate to send messages.

Have a great week-end and let's keep Subbuteo alive!
