The first Subbuteo tournament ever in Mongolia

The final

July 20, 2023 will remain in the history of table football as the very first Subbuteo tablefootball tournament in Mongolia took place in the city of Gobi. We are extremely proud that the event was played under WASPA banner. 8 players from Mongolia and Malta were taking part under the guidance of Clarence Psaila who proved to be a great ambassador of the game during his stay in the country.

Clarence, who is also known as a chess player, introduced the game to the players of a chess club in Gobi, chess being one of the most famous hobbies in the country. After several days introducing the game, a total of 12 players had the chance to play games. Finally 8 players attended the tournament. After the group stage, Clarence Plasila defeated local player Tumendembrel Ganbaatar (2-0) to claim the title.

More importantly, there is real interest for the game as local players enjoyed themselves while some curious spectators showed real interest.

July 2023 (part 1): results from the Netherlands and England

Here is the first part of results from this month. We have already collected results from 23 events so here is a summary of the first events of the month.

One of the most exciting events on the last few months took place in Gouda (the Netherlands) with a great field of 23 players including two foreign players. Belgium's Ludovic Ponthieux finally took the honors after beating Germany's Rudi Knuf in the final. Dutchmen Casey van Os and Fabrizio Cavazza made it to the semi-finals. More importantly it was a great day of table football with every player being given the chance to play many games and it was nice also to see some new names among the players. As written several times this season, it's good to see the Netherlands having a revival. That's promising for the future!

Elliot Bellefontaine winner in Bristol

The final stage of the English championshIp was organized by the Bristol club. it was an amazing tournament with 39 players from 14 different clubs taking place.  Elliot Bellefontaine won his third event and shares the first place of the final table with Chris Thomas. Elliot was undefeated but shared the first place of the day with Rudi Peterschinigg. Elliot was decided tournament winner on goal difference. Final table was as follows:

London TFC: Home win for Elliot Bellefontaine

London TFC players had a tournament with home and away fixtures. No surprise in the results as Elliot Bellefontaine won all his games to claim the trophy.

Durham City is back

We are pleased to see the Durham City club holding a first tournament this season. Host Graeme Gibson couldn't stop Nick Pearson (tournament winner) and Tom Heslop (runner-up) but all players had a great day, which is the most important thing after all.

If England is definately the most active nation in the WASPA circuit, it's amazing to see the great development of some local club. The Leicester Foxes had a great event with 24 players from 9 ddifferent clubs taking part. After the group stage, the top 16 players made it to the knock-out games for the main competition. Sam Curtis (Yorkshire) defeated Simon Bodily (Pedmore) in the final while Jeremy Bradley (TSPA White Star) and Graham Harwood (Pedmore) reached the semis. Stuart Briffett (Bristol) defeated Mark Weaver (Leicester) to claim the consolation tournament.

Kye Arnold wins in Gillingham

Kent Invicta TFC is back in their new venue and the club held a tournament on July 10. Kye Arnold beat Dave Collier in the final while Terry Arnold and Malcolm Jamieson made it to the final 4. 12 players were taking part.

Rochford and Southend Casual Subbuteo Club: Mark West wins first tournament

Mark West won this month's RAS tournament after defeating Adam Jackson in the final. 8 players were taking part and this time they were divided into two groups of 4 with finals for places 1 to 8.

We added 39 tournaments in the records, which were divided as follows: 32 "regional", 5 "old rules" and 2 "promotional events".

The club of OSC Libertas Roma held a WASPA tournament for the first time. We wish them a huge welcome!

Tournaments were held in many different nations: England, Italy, Northern Ireland, Wales, the Netherlands, Ireland, Australia, South Africa, Greece, Belgium and Spain. That's fantastic!

There is a trend showing that events are becoming bigger. We saw several tournaments with an amazing turnout, which is great.

No need to say more. We hope players still enjoy the circuit and its atmosphere. We keep the game alive and that's a real achivement!

If you see missing results, don't hesitate to contact us. This will be corrected next month!

How to send results?

This is a question I often receive and the easiest way to send results is to keep individual scores of all games (group stages, knock-out games) + a list of players taking part (first name, name, club, country, birthdate also if there are new juniors). Once we have that, it's usually easier to keep records.

Once again, I insist on the fact clubs should not hesitate to run tournaments under the WASPA banner. It's a great way to promote your club, to attract new players and to create local or regional development and we all agree this is what the game needs nowadays.

All your ideas to make the WASPA circuit more attractive are more than welcome. Don't hesitate to send your feedback. We also hope to see more and more clubs running events under the WASPA banner in the future.

June 2023: final results from Spain, Northern Ireland, Belgium and England

Here is a quick review of the latest WASPA results collected in June with events held in Spain, Northern Ireland, Belgium and England.

Vicenç Prats wins 5th stage of the Catalan circuit

The final

In the last week-end of June the last stage of the "Circuit Català de Futbol de Taula" took place with 26 players from various clubs taking part. It was also the come-back of table football in Breda and many of the country's top players were taking part. it was an honor also to see Subbuteo legend Arturo Martinez attending his very first WASPA tournament. The former world champion Vicenç Prats defeated Ferran Coll in the final. Coll is also rthe leader of the circuit after 5 tournaments. There will be big finals on July 30 in the city of Montornès del Vallès. Good luck to all involved players and thanks to the organizers for the amazing work!

Jason Christopher winner in Derry

Earlier in June the Derry Open was an amazing success with players travelling from many countries to play the FISTF Open. The consolation event was held under WASPA banner with 23 players taking aprt and many great games. Jason Christopher (Solent) defeated Justin Scott (Wolverhampton) in the final to claim the trophy. Semi-finalists were Dan Nicholls (Yorkshire) and Martin Bellefontaine (London TFC). Hue thanks to the organizers for showing FISTF and WASPA circuits can work together. Way to go as it makes players happy to have more important games during the week-end.

Belgium: Matthias Averlant winner in Stembert

The Stembert club held a WASPA tournament for young players. The average age of entrants was close to 20 and six players travelled from different cities to play in "La Cave", the world-famous home of ST Stembert. Afther the group format, Lucas Père and Matthias averlant played the final. Averlant took the honors to claim his 7th WASPA regional title. Thanks to Mélina Scheen for organising a great day of table football.

Last Wednesday's Old Rules WASPA in Leicester

With a smaller than usual field of 6 local players took the opportunity to play a league format. "For added giggles crouching goalies were the order of the day and big balls were also used. We quickly exhausted all the big ball jokes and cliches ('til next time!) and soon got down to that special love and frustration we have for old school bases. Many a protracted scream that only an errant heavyweight can induce was heard throughout the night. Graham Harwood probably wins the frustrated rant award for screaming at Paul Taylor to "stop blocking my players!". An evening of great fun was had by all. For what it's worth Graham finished top of the evening's league with Paul as runner up", report Graham Harwood.

First WASPA trophy for Jann Segers in Belgium

In Dagenham, there was another WASPA win for Kye Arnold at the CHASERS (Chadwell Heath & South Essex, Romford Subbuteo) Club. 100% record on the night without conceding and beating Terry 3-0 Arnold in an all Kent Invicta final for the Cup

Victor Jones wins old rules event

Victor Jones (Harrow Hawks) won the Subbuteo Old School Cup 2023 a WASPA tournament organised by London SC and Steve Moreton of the Stadium of Fingers at La Pizzica Restaurant in Fulham on Saturday 24 June 2023. Runner-up Simon Goodman (Surrey Saracens).

It was a classic final between two English Internationals: Simon Goodman (Surrey Saracens)  was the Cup runner-up.

Valter Baroncini (London SC)  won the Plate. Tony Banks (London SC) Plate runner-up.

Neil Doherty (Harrow Hawks) won the Shield. Gianluca Zucchelli (London SC) Shied runner-up.

We tested the Subbuteofest 2023 old school rules playing on cloth pitches with plastic goals and medium balls.

Before kick off we celebrated the life of Chris Phillips (Surrey Saracens) and Mike Dent with a minute applause ended on the note of  Smoke on the water from Mike's favourite band, the Deep Purple.

June 2023: results from England, Australia, Italy and Belgium.

Here again we have a summary of events held in the last few days in England, Australia, Italy and Belgium.

For sure the most amazing tournament this week was the Chesterfield tournament counting for the English Championship. Firstly, congratulations to Andrew Forster Fake and Chesterfield TFC for running an excellent event on Sunday, hosting round 5 of the English Championships.

Well done to the winner, Elliott Bellefontaine, who can still win the Championship with victory at Bristol, and the runner up Aaron Skinner, who moves up to third place. 

Another solid performance from Gage Badger sees him win the Under 20s and consolidate his position as the top under 20 player in England.

The last event will be played at Bristol Subbuteo Club on Sunday 2nd July, where the 10 English Masters places will be decided and the English Champion crowned. Good luck everyone!

Nick Pearson wins his first WASPA Cup in Houghton Le Spring on Wednesday. New boy Jim Race gave a good account of himself on his home pitch squeezing in equalisers against Tom and Chris. Nick’s winner against Jim came 3 seconds from time!

Tom scored a rare win over Chris to push him into bottom spot. That’s a rarity in itself!

Finally, we received results from Rome, Italy where the the " ALBA SUBBUTEO ROMA W.A.S.P.A. TOUR" had a stage in the premises of OSC Libertas Roma. 12 players from different clubs competed with old rules. The theme of the tournament was "German football" and Gianluca Ginesi was the big winner of the day after defeating Marco Scialanga in the final. June 2023: results from the Netherlands, Wales, England, Greece and Belgium

We receive results of WASPA events almost every day and it's sometimes complicated to make good stories. When organizers send an article and pictures, it's always welcome. So here is a breif summary of the latest WASPA results collected from the Netherlands, Wales, England, Greece and Belgium.

In the Netherlands, the 10th round of the local league in Gouda took place last week with 8 players taking part. After group games, Patrick de Jong won the final against Marco de Bruin (2-1) to claim the honors.

Final: Patrick de Jong - Marco de Bruin 2-1
Final 3-4: Rinaldo van Dijk - Martijn de Jong 3-1
Final 5-6: Xavier Aret - Chantal de Jong 2-0
Final 7-8: Richard Oranje - Otto Remmers 1-0

In London, Tony Banks was the winner of the Old Rules WASPA (World Amateur Subbuteo Players Association) tournament organised on Wednesday by the London Subbuteo Club at La Pizzica Restaurant - London. Runner-up was Tony Riley who visited the club from Spain. Third Stephen Moreton, fourth Gianluca Zucchelli and fight George Slater.

In Wales, London Road SC welcomed back Raoul Newton as well as being visited by Morecombe Bay SC players Rob Wilkinson and Keith Carman. 

Brian Daley won the tournament beating Ruby Matthews in the Final. In the plate event Lucasz Whittle beat Brian Hall.

The latest Rochford & Southend tournament took place this week at "the Oakwood" in Leigh on Sea. Devyn Dyson was the undisputed winner after winning his four games. It was great also to see two players attending their first WASPA tournament. Final standings were as follows (all R&S players unless noted):

Andover Subbuteo Club has a small event with four players during the week. Jason Christopher took the honors after winning 2 of his three games and sharing points against Chris Burford. Final standings were as follows:

Yorkshire Phoenix also had a great tournament with 10 players taking part.

"Another great club night at Dewsbury Moor Sports Club for our latest WASPA (World Amateur Subbuteo Players Association) event. Ten players took part this evening including a returning Dan Nicholls and new club player Vicky Lewis.

The night was won by a canter by WASPA specialist Brian Daley. Second place was shared three ways between Dan, Craig Heward and Shaun Dunne. Thank you to everyone that took part - next club meet is Thursday 13th July", wrote the organizers.

We have been extremely delighted to receive results from Greece for the first time for months. Players in Thessaloniki were glad to host Austria's Alfred Strommer for some good games. 8 players attended the event and Ilias Galanopoulos defeated Thanasis Giaglis in the final (6-3). Alfred Strommer and 

Nikos Giotlis were the unlucky semi-finalists.

In England, Worthing players met for their monthly tournament. Paul Woodhouse took the honors. Thanks to Ian Maskell for sending regular results of the club!

Finally, last Friday Templeuve United in Belgium held a promotional tournament. 7 players were attending the club night but only 4 players were allowed to play the "promotional" event as according to WASPA rules. Benjamin Marain (AS Hennuyer), the youngest players taking part, too the honors after winning his 3 games. Michaël Dupret (Magic team Tournai) was runner-up while Templeuve players Sébastien Sorge and Eric Caillaux took the 3rd and 4th spots.
