Subbuteo table football is back in Yokohama

We have received great news from Japan where our old friend Kenzo Koi organized a small tournament under WASPA banner on December 30. Kenzo, who is the historic organizer of the game in Japan, managed to have 5 players.

After the group stage, the standings were as follows:

1. Kenzo Koi (8 points)
2. Suguru Fujino (7 points)
3. Takafumi Kido (6 points)
4. Takafumi Tokita (5 points)
5. Yoshiyuki Okano (1 points)

After the group stages, finals were played. Kenzo Koi won the big game against Suguru Fujino (1-0) to claim the victory while Takafumi Kido defeated Takafumi Tokita in the game for the third place (3-0).

Huge thanks to Kenzo for organizing the tournament. We are looking forward to see Japan holding more WASPA events in the near future and we also hope there will be further developments, possibly with other organizers!

Sean takes the Christmas Challenge

December the 15th saw the second leg of the Randburg Nite Series, namely the annual Christmas Challenge proudly hosted by the Johannesburg TFC, aka the 'Joburg Eagles'.

A very good field of 8 players played a round robin league system whereby each player played 7 games.

It was great to welcome back the Joburg Eagles stalwarts in Johan Nieuwenhuys and Chris Dimmer. Both of these players have been friends for over 55 years and have been playing this great game for almost the same time period. It was also great to see Waynne Pienaar and his son Jason.

Once again the tournament was played in the true festive spirit with the normal banter and chirps between all the players.

Sean Morgan rounded off a very impressive year and comfortably won yet another tournament to cement his spot as the top ranked player on the local circuit. His fine showing in the SA Champs by only losing to renowned English Superstar Justin Finch in the final. Jason Kennedy was also in great form and clinched the runners-up spot. Clifford claimed third spot with Johan edging out Chris in their life-long Subbuteo rivalry, by the smallest of margins.

Waynne secured the family bragging rights by edging out his son to claim the seventh spot.

Everybody at the Joburg Eagles and all fellow South African Subbuteo flickers would like to wish everybody a very blessed Christmas and a prosperous New Year free of this persistent Chinese Covid scurge.

Belgium: december tournaments in Templeuve, Antwerp and Tournai

Belgium has been active in the WASPA circuit in December with three tournaments organized by different clubs.

The Templeuve Christmas Cup was held last Friday and 11 players were taking part. The Christmas Cup is the traditional club's main event of the season but this year, due to the rescheduled national calendar, the national league for clubs took place during the week-end so the Templeuve tournament was rescheduled from Saturday to Friday evening and, as a consequence, only players from the area were taking part. Geoffrey Marain won his four games to claim the title. With the new covid restrictions announced in the country, it is not sure yet that there will be another tournament in January.

Final standings:

1. Geoffrey Marain (AS Hennuyer)
2. Vincent Coppenolle (Templeuve)
3. Matthias Averlant (Templeuve)

6. Benjamin Marain (Templeuve)
7. Didier Moons (Templeuve)
8. Sébastien Sorge (FRA/Templeuve)
9. Eric Caillaux (FRA/Templeuve)
10. Loris Celton (Templeuve)
11. Jocelyn Celton (Templeuve)

In Antwerp, the SC Flanders players met on Monday with 8 players attending the club's 72nd WASPA tournament. Once again, David Wouters proved to be the "man of the season" by winning another event while Jos Ceulemans was (onc again) runner-up.

Final standings:
1. David Wouters (SC Flanders)
2. Jos Ceulemans (SC Flanders)
3. Johan Lourdon (SC Flanders)
4. Geert Leys (SC Flanders)

6. Robin Somers (SC Flanders)

We are happy to see Sydney TFC hosting their Christmas Cup. The tournament was held last week with a great turnout of 14 players who where divided into 2 groups of 3 and 2 groups of 4 players. here is the report from the club official Facebook page:

"Really nice to see players coming back to the game after few years of inactivity and also good to see new faces taking part and adding into our subbuteo community after months of lockdown!

Congratulations to all the players especially the two who reached the final and battled out to bring the trophy at home!

Fabrizio Coco after 5 years the competition was born, finally took the trophy at home defeating Raffaele Lombard after a very tight and exciting game finished 0-0 at the normal time (Fabrizio won on penalties shots 3-2).

Thanks once again to everybody who attended and to Steve Dettre who set up the live stream, Well done mate!!!

Wishing everybody a safe and happy Christmas, see you at the next appointment in Willoughby in 2 weeks time for another WASPA tournament!"

A few days earlier, the club also held the monthly WASPA tournament of November. This time there was a smaller turnout of 5 players and Tony Credentino finished on top of the round robin with the same number of points as Fabrizio Coco but a few more goals scored! Congratulations to Tony!
