WASPA results from England - February and March 2025

The Subbuteo scene is just amazing in the UK with many different clubs organizing regular WASPA events. Some midweek tournaments are just a perfect way to keep local players motivated and are a source of inspiration to improve standards of play. Some bigger events attract larger fields of players and even the big ESA tournaments are played under WASPA banner, which is also a way to keep players involved. It's really hard to make regular stories about what's going on in England as there are many events. We are pleased to see new clubs (Milton Keynes TSC, Stourbridge Casual SC) or returning clubs (Rochford and Southend). There is a strong dynamic circuit and it's fantastic to see so many different players taking part. Here is just a brief summary of results of February and March.
A quick note to let everyone know the "special" events are also welcome. You can for instance run old rules tournaments, promotional event (not for the top players -> see rules int he WASPA handbook) or even tournaments with special rules.
We hope to make some better promotion of events run in England in the future and we would appreciate of someone could help writing stories. Thanks in advance for your help!

A big Subbuteo night in Romania

Last Wednesday the club of Bucharest had a blast as the only club in Romani had special guests from abroad. Paul Andreas (Cyprus) and Andrey Vlasov (Russia) were attending the club night and a WASPA tournament could take place with six players. Paul proved to be the most experienced player of the night but Cezar Stoilescu managed to be runner-up. We are happy to see our friends in Romania developping slowly but surely.

Marain, Ceulemans and Midoux winners in Wattrelos

Players at the WASPA event on Friday evening

This week-end was a very special one for the French club of Wattrelos as the guys in the north of France were holding their first big tournament. With 36 players attending the FISTF Satellite on Saturday, the event was a success. Besides the main event, three smaller WASPA events have been ehld during the week-end.
Père, Marain and Rochez on the podium of the Friday tournament

On Friday evening, 15 players §including some players who were not allowed to play the satellite) came in the premises of the French club to play a Swiss system tournament and many good games were played. Geoffrey Marain won his 147th tournament after winning his four games while Lucas Père was runner-up and Sébastien Rochez was third.

Jos Ceulemans and David Sardi de Letto

On Saturday, the 2 consolation tournaments of the Satellite were also played under WASPA banner. 9 players attended the "WASPA Plate" for players ranked third in their group and Jos Ceulemans (SC Flanders) took the honors after beating local player David Sardi de Letto in the final.

Jordan Bonte and Rafaël Midoux

In the "WASPA Shield" for players ranked fourth in their group, Rafaël Midoux (AS Hennuyer) defeated Jordan Bonte (Wattrelos) to win the prize.

Congratulations to Sébastien Sorge and his crew for organising a fantastic week-end with another successful partnership between FISTF and WASPA.

Ferran Coll triumphs in Girona

On Sunday, March 30, Girona hosted a tournament of the Catalan Table Football Circuit for the second time. This edition was held at the facilities in the Sant Narcís neighborhood of the GEiE , bringing together 26 players from all over Catalonia: Barcelona, L'Hospitalet, Montornès, Mataró, Breda and, obviously, a local representation from Girona.

This was the fourth scoring tournament of the 2024-2025 season, of the five events that make up the Circuit and that determine the 16 qualified for the final playoffs. The competition was intense and full of emotions, with great matches that kept the excitement going until the last moment.

The final offered a duel already known within the Catalan Circuit: Ferran Coll (Vila de Gràcia) against Vicenç Prats (Sarrià). Although on most occasions it has been Prats who has prevailed, this time Coll reversed the trend and took the tournament with a narrow victory by 2 to 1.

With this triumph, the player from Gracia consolidates his leadership in the general classification and takes a firm step towards the playoffs.

The consolation tournament, for Guillem Balaguer

As for the consolation tournament, Guillem Balaguer was proclaimed champion after beating Cesc Vidal (Mataró) in the final. Vidal, who had already reached the consolation final in the previous tournament, repeated a great performance, demonstrating his progression in the competition.

One last tournament before the playoffs

With this competition, the Catalan Circuit enters its final stretch. There is only one tournament left before the playoffs , and it will be held on June 1 , at a venue yet to be determined. The players will have one last chance to secure a place among the top 16 and fight for the title of champion of the season.

New home for Edinburgh Subbuteo

March saw the return of the 'Golazzo' Edinburgh Subbuteo club at another new home, The Leith Docker's Club in Edinburgh.

After a comfortable start, Marco retained the title in this month's WASPA through a goal in the last few minutes to make it 2-2 against Dave "the Danger" Allen.

Andy Kent continues his rapid rise in the Edinburgh ranks by dispatching Bruce "The Bomber" Henderson 1 - 0 in a tight contest before a resolute performance by Paul "The Madyin" McFadyen halted his progress, securing a 0 - 0 in the Cramond Derby.

We would like to say a huge thanks to Leith Docker's Club for hosting us and hopefully this is the start of a long stay at our new venue.

A special Subbuteo workshop in Wil/Switzerland

Even if only at an unofficial event for the time being, Willi Hofmann is fortunately back in the Swiss Subbuteo scene: On 22 March, the former six-time European champion and 1986 World Cup winner Willi Hofmann (SUI) met with two current internationally active FISTF licensed players at the ‘SUBBUTEO Tischfussball TREFF Wil’: Wolfgang Haas (AUT, lives in Switzerland, winner of the 2025 Australian Grand Prix) and Clinton Gähwiler (SUI, lived in South Africa for a long time, and immediately became Swiss champion in 2023 after moving there).

The aim was to share practical and theoretical experiences of playing materials from the past, present and perhaps also of the future. Workshop organiser Martin Wiesmann (SUI): "I am delighted that these three Subbuteo enthusiasts from the most diverse backgrounds and Subbuteo careers were able to try out and discuss the various materials, techniques and tactics with me with curiosity and an open mind".

Willi Hofmann (centre) had not only brought along his ‘Cones’ (curling figures weighing just 0.8 grams), but also milestones relevant to our table football history such as the original 'Newfooty figure' (front right), the ‘Sport figure’ developed by him and, of course, his creation ‘Toccer’. Wolfgang Haas (left), who also used to play with the ‘Sport figure’ and then switched to the ‘C3S’ from Profibase, was able to impart a lot of knowledge about the ‘Turtle Goalies’, developed by his brother Christian. Clinton Gähwiler (right), who played with the ‘Heavy Weight’ figures in the ‘Old Subbuteo’ category at the World Cup 2024, is an expert with them.

Clinton and Wolfgang tested their ‘C3S’ and ‘Heavy Weights’ on two different pitches and with different balls against Willi with his ‘Cones’. The FISTF recently refused to grant homologation for this, in contrast to the authorisation previously granted for the ‘Turtles’. It turned out that the curled ‘Cones’ can certainly compete with the other types of figures - at least in the hands of old master Willi Hofmann. The main reason he gave for developing the ‘Cones’ was that he wanted to extend the range of technical possibilities (curling) compared to the figures commonly used today and to enable experts to play a more challenging game.

It can be assumed that ‘Turtle’, ‘Cones’ and also the great popularity of the ‘Heavy Weight’ at Old-Subbuteo will clearly stimulate discussions about the further development of our sports table football.

Writer: Martin Wiesmann

There is a video here in which you can see the shooting and curling technique of Willi's 'Cones'.
