WASPA test-match in North Shields

Chris and Nick
Here in North Shields, we currently have a small player base so we need to take advantage of everything WASPA has to offer to make the games as competitive as possible.

With Nick Pearson playing for London Road, the opportunity was there for a test match. Chris duly challenged him and he gladly took up the gauntlet.

Three tightly contested games were played on a chilly night in The Dungeon with the heater on full blast!

This was a really close one just edged by Chris courtesy of a 1-0 win in game two. Games one and three finished one apiece. It really could have gone either way right up to the buzzer.

Please feel free to view the game on the North Shields Subbuteo Table Football page.

Australia: latest results from Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth

Here is a quick summary of recent results collected from different tournaments in Australia. We are glad to see five clubs running tournaments under WASPA banner in November.

The Western Flickers held their first event for a while on November 12 with 5 players from 4 different clubs taking part. Benji Batten (Melbourne TFC) finished on top of the table while Adriann Connolly (Western Flickers) was runner-up, Paul Mercer (Northern Phoenix) was third, Adam Deverell (Western Flickers) was fourth and Kevin Grant (Central Victoria) was 5th.

In Sydney, the Northern Falcons held a tournament using the Swiss system. Seven players were taking part and Eliot Kennedy claimed the trophy. The Swiss format provided lots of drama, with Eliot, Geoff and Torben all with a chance of victory going into the last round. With the score at 1-1 between Eliot and Torben, all Geoff needed was a win. But then Jonty scored, and Eliot went 2-1 up,

Final standings:

1. Eliot Kennedy
2. Jonty Brener
3. Torben Pfister
4. Steve Dettre
5. Geoff Sirmai
6. Simon Cole
7. Neil Brener

The Northern Falcons also announced they have a new logo. The original was a hastily put together design when they had their shirts made for the 2015 Asian Cup. The new logo has taken a while to craft, by Louis Dettre, with some advice from Adrian. While the old logo the falcon head faced backwards, referencing our past, the new logo faces forward, to the future. The star for the Asian Cup victory also features. The logo will adorn a revamped Northern Falcons shirt.

Melbourne TFC held a first Trendy InnerNorth Subbuteo (TINS) WASPA tournament on November 17. Small turnout of 3 but great games. Peter Thomas took the honors while Benji Batten was runner-up and Beth Eveleigh (Northern Phoenix) was third.

This Sunday, the Brisbane tournament was played in memory of Chris Scoles "one of Us" and presenting the trophy was Claire Scoles.

Another excellent performance from Kevin Halliday who manages to finish top of the division 1 in front of Giuseppe and Gus. In Division 2 Gerry Vickers won the group of 4 players.

Finally, the latest Perth tournament attracted six players on Sunday and Brian Pearson finished on top of the gorup format. Final table:

1. Brian Pearson
2. Alan Kimber
3. Mick DeVincentis
4. Hugh Best
5. Chris Thorn
6. Noel Mani

Ian Clarke claims Randburg Open Title

Saturday the 30th of October saw the hosting of the annual Randburg Tournament proudly hosted by the Joburg TFC, aka 'The Eagles'.

A new concept was introduced in the form of a 'Development Tournament' comprising novices played before the main tournament. The winner of the latter then qualified for the Randburg Tournament proper. This concept proved a major success and all the 'newbies' or novices played against the same calibre of player with no skewed results. Gordon Underwood proved superior in the Development Tournament and beat Kevin Francis in the 'Development Final'. Gordon then earned the qualification spot to partake in the main tournament.

Seven players from 3 different local clubs then flicked off for the title. The format was an 7 team league with the top 4 players qualifying for the knockout stages.

A plate trophy was also introduced for the remaining 3 players.

Ian Clarke, fresh from his recent victory in an Easterns Tournament, proved that he meant business by remaining undefeated and duly qualified as top player from the group. Clifford qualified in second spot, with Jason and Gary completing the qualifying quartet.

The semi finals showcased two tough games whereby the top two players, Ian and Clifford, both progressed by virtue of 2 nil scorelines vs Gary and Jason respectively.

The final proved to be an extremely tight affair and a defensive lapse allowed an in-form Ian Clarke to score a great winning goal and claim his maiden Randburg Open title for 2021.

In the plate final, Carl defeated an ever improving Gordon Underwood by a solitary goal.

Special Randburg AFC medals were handed out to the winners and Ian also collected the Randburg Open trophy.

Once again the Joburg Eagles sponsored delicious toasties and drinks for all the competitors.

All in all, great fun was the order of the day with the usual football banter exchanged between all.

1. Olliver Ollnow

3. Nico Müller
4. Ronny Lange
5. Peer Fülster
6. Norbert Wolk

The Subbuteo Club Berlin is developing and Nico Müller is glad to say that number of participants of the regular club evenings has risen significantly. Six to eight people on a Wednesday night is not too bad.

Subbuteo action in Brisbane and Sydney

Things are getting better in Australia and we are glad to receive results from Brisbane and Sydney.

Giuseppe Tardiota added one more titile to his collection last week-end when he won the latest Brisbane tournament. 5 flickers met for great games and in the end of the day, Giuseppe defeated Kevin Halliday in the final.

Northern Falcons are back!

After 125 da
ys, the Falcons were in action again on October 18, with a WASPA at Willoughby Park. Kennedy Congrats to Eliot for his win, starting like he hadn't had a break, with some excellent shooting to beat Jonty 4-0 and then Steve 3-1. Also big ups to Geoff for his second place, confirmed with a win over Steve and arguably the goal of the night in a 1-0 victory. Thanks also to Adrian and Jonty for coming to play. We also took advantage of the new cafe at the club for a sneaky dinner break and their Monday night special. Next night will be Monday, November 1. Stay tuned for details.

Final standings:
1. Eliot Kennedy
2. Geoff Sirmai
3. Adrian Grunbach
4. Steve Dettre
5. Jonty Brener

Thanks to the Sydney TFC guys for Tuesday night. Great to see Terry and Billy Koutzas back in action after a few years out of the game. Just goes to show it's never too late to resume... or to start!

Congrats to Fabrizio who started slowly but brushed away the cobwebs to win the final. Terry caused a major stir when he scored a cracker to lead 1-0 against Steve at the break, only to succumb to the weight of attacks in the second half. Also great to see loyal clubman Stefanos in action.

Semi-finals:
Fabrizio Coco - Tony Credentino 1-0
Eliot Kennedy - Steve Dettre 1-0

Final:
Fabrizio Coco - Eliot Kennedy 3-0
