Asian Cup of Table Football Consolation Plate WASPA

Those players who were eliminated from the FISTF International Open at the Asian Cup of Table Football 2018 in Melbourne were invited to compete for the Consolation Plate on the afternoon of Saturday 20th January. This was the Northern Phoenix WASPA for January and saw 19 players enter.
Western Flickers’ President Benny Ng was unlucky to have been eliminated from the FISTIF Open in the Group of Death. He went into the WASPA as the favourite in the eyes of many.
The barrage saw Chris Thorn of Perth Subbuteo defeat Enzo Coco of Sydney TFC 1-0; Hideaki Wada (Japan) defeat Fauzi Rahman (Western Flickers) 1-0; and Arjuna Hanafi (Western Flickers) defeat Alan Kimber (Perth Subbuteo) 2-1.
In the round of 16 Benny Ng easily account for Perth’s Chris Thorn 4-1, whilst Adrian Grunbach (Sydney TFC) marked himself as a player to watch in this event with a 4-0 over Hideaki Wada, and Christos Garagounis (Northern Phoenix) had a comfortable 2-0 win over Arjuna Hanafi. The other games in this round were all tightly contested. Tony Credentino (Sydney TFC), Adrian Elmer (Parramatta) and Hugh Best (Perth) all defeated their opponents 1-0, whilst Steve Dettre (North Falcons) also won narrowly, 2-1. The final round of 16 clash saw Tomoyoshi Ikeya (Japan) overcome Anthony Madiona (Western Flickers) on penalties after a goalless draw.
The quarter finals saw the two most impressive winners of the previous round take on each other in a high scoring affair with Benny Ng prevailing 5-3 over Adrian Grunbach. Tony Credentino kept another clean sheet in his 2-0 victory over Christos Garagounis, whilst Adrian Elmer repeated his round of 16 scoreline in defeating Hugh Best 1-0. Steve Dettre was too good for Tomoyoshi Ikeya in the remaining quarter final, winning 5-0.
In the semi finals Adrian Elmer again won 1-0, this time against Steve Dettre, to earn the right to face Benny Ng in the final after Benny accounted for Tony Credentino 2-0.
The final pitted the player with the best attack (Benny Ng with 11 goals) against the player with the best defence (Adrian Elmer was yet to concede). In the end it was the attacking skills of Benny that prevailed as despite Adrian scoring one goal again for the fourth successive match, Benny put three past Adrian’s keeper to take out the game, and the WASPA Plate, 3-1.
